Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa

You’re not allowed to take photos, but you get tickets on the machine in the front. The architecture was gorgeous and we enjoyed the collection inside. They also had a cool showing at the time that we also liked. Make sure to keep quiet though! There’s another gallery and store in the same plaza so be sure to explore.

Rather than the artworks, which I honestly found quite repetitive, I personally took more pleasure in the architectural spaces. They sinuously and elegantly craft areas between the surrounding forest and circular inner garden islands of carefully chosen plants, all enclosed by large glass panes.

An incredible museum with a building (and architecture) to match. Worth a short detour. Easy parking and friendly staff. Tickets available at the door.

Amazing artworks and architecture

One of the most popular art museums to visit in Karuizawa. Do NOT miss this place!!! (no photos allowed inside; so pls check it out yourself)

Evocative architecture and artwork. The place, the nature, and the content on display are all first class. Worth the long walk there. Not accessible by public transport. We walked for 20mins from the busstop opp high school.

This place is very pretty and picturesque, but unfortunately you are not 'allowed' to take photos. There are security cameras and guards to make sure you don't :). The artwork is beautiful but even more so with the building. The lighting that comes through, with the minimal design, contrasted with nature is really amazing. They have booklets in all sorts of languages. I suggest you follow the order in the booklet to truly understand the pieces you are looking at. The gift shop is small, I wish they had more things to purchase related to the current exhibit. They basically had small prints and postcards. The museum itself is a little out of the way, you will need a car or a taxi. There is no direct public transit.
