"Hirschgarten: Europe's Largest Beer Garden The Royal Hirschgarten, – normally just referred to as the Hirschgarten (Deer Garden) is Europe's largest beer garden, with seating for an incredible 8000 people! Its' original purpose was to serve as hunting grounds for Munich 's nobility. Part of the history is still retained today, with deer in a large enclosure that guests can observe over a choice of Augustiner, Kaltenberger Brewery beers with their King Ludwig brands or a beer from the Tegernsee Ducal Breweries."

A True Munich Gem – The Hirschgarten Experience Hirschgarten is undoubtedly one of the most unique and authentic places in Munich, and visiting it is an absolute must for anyone—whether you're a local, an expat, or a traveler exploring the Bavarian capital. 🌳 Ambiance & Atmosphere: Nestled within a beautiful, expansive park, Hirschgarten offers a wonderful mix of nature and tradition. The sight of deer roaming freely in the park adds a magical touch—especially for families and kids, who are always delighted to feed them (don’t forget to bring some carrots or apples!). The beer garden itself is massive—claiming the title of the largest beer garden in the world—and despite its size, it maintains a cozy, welcoming vibe. Tall chestnut trees provide perfect shade in the summer, and the open space is a fantastic spot to enjoy a lazy afternoon. 🍺 Food & Drinks: Classic Bavarian fare at its best! The self-service area offers a wide variety of options: from crispy Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) and Wurst to Obatzda, Brezn, and Kartoffelsalat. And, of course, the star of the show is the Augustiner beer served fresh from the barrel—truly a treat for beer lovers. If you're with friends, the traditional Maß (1-liter beer mug) is a must-try! Prices are fair and portions are generous. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family-Friendly & Community Vibes: Hirschgarten is perfect for families. There’s a spacious playground for kids, and the large park offers plenty of space for picnics, frisbee, badminton, table tennis, basketball, football, jogging, cycling, hiking, skating, running or just relaxing on the grass. It’s also a great spot to meet locals and make new friends over a shared table and a cold beer. 🚴 Accessibility & Location: Easily reachable via public transport (S-Bahn Hirschgarten station or trams), and if you’re cycling, it’s a popular stop for many on their biking routes through the city. There’s also plenty of bike parking nearby. 💶 Cost & Value: Excellent value for money, especially considering the quality of the food, the iconic beer, and the sheer size of the venue. It's an experience that feels more like a local tradition than a commercialized tourist spot. 🌦️ Pro Tips: Bring cash, as some stalls may not accept cards. Arrive early on weekends if you want a prime table under the trees. Visit in the early evening for a magical sunset vibe over the park. In summary, Hirschgarten is much more than just a beer garden—it’s a slice of Bavarian life where traditions, community, and nature come together beautifully. Whether you're enjoying a beer under the chestnut trees, feeding deer, or simply soaking in the laid-back atmosphere, you'll leave with a smile on your face and memories that will last. Highly recommended—prost! 🍻

Close to Nymphenburg Palace, the Hirschgarten is the former hunting grounds for Bavarian monarchs. There are tons of tables under giant shade trees and you can drink your beer and eat some food. There is a self-serve beer dispensary as well as all kinds of food. Well worth a visit!

Largest beer garden. The shaded outdoor seating is great for eating and enjoying a cold beer & food. They have a nice selection of beers, including local brews. 1 liter beer is €8. I tried their traditional bratwurst €7.50 and was tasty. There are deers that you can feed them too.

Stopped by this garden on our way to Nymphenburg palace, saw lots of deers in the garden. Stayed a while for an open air band performance on a Sunday morning. Very relaxing atmosphere and great beer there

Amazing atmosphere especially with the great musical performances. The food was authentic and really tasty. Great place to visit on a Sunday to experience the local culture, drink some beer and maybe play some cards. Overall a great experience, can't recommend it enough.

One of my favorite places in Munich to go for an afternoon beer. Sit with friends and watch the fallow deer come out of their groups around dusk to chomp on carrots, lettuce and whatever people bring to feed them… even occasionally get the odd petting in or touch of an antler. Such a unique experience to get to relax with a beer near the deer…

Yelp
This is a great "Oktoberfest" experience that you don't have to fight tourists for. A HUGE beer garden with multiple beer kiosks serving different styles of drinks. They have a variety of traditional foods in the garden area, as well as more standard dishes in the formal restaurant.

Yelp
Came here for my 21st birthday dinner! Beautiful beer garden with a good amount of food options and great beer. Friendly staff and quick wait times. Would recommend the shnitzel with their jam! Great for large groups or intimate gatherings! They also have free pins at the front to take home to remember the place.

Yelp
Such a great spot! It was rainy and cold so we opted for the charming and warm inside. A ton of people were outside playing games and socializing! The staff was so friendly and SO FAST! The food was all so delicious! Had a weissbier, but they had nonalcoholic beer and other sodas.

Yelp
Hirschgarten is hands down one of my favorite beergardens in Munich. You sit under chestnut trees, surrounded by a park. Everyone has a huge beer in front of them, some people bring their own food and make a potluck with their friends, others get the food at the vendor stands. Everybody is relaxed, enjoying the nice wether and the outdoors. I love it! We met with a bunch of friends and secured two tables in the back of the seating area - just because there was more shade and we had a few kids with us. BTW: this place is perfect for kids. They can run around, there is a carousel they can ride, deer they can watch and a couple of playgrounds in the park. So, there was a lot of beer. And a lot of food. If you look at my pictures, you know what I mean. :-) Parking is a pain, so better take public transportation! You can enjoy more beer this way as well!! What did we eat? Steckerlfisch (fish on a stick), a Schweinshaxn (pork knuckle), an Radi (raddish), a Brezn (pretzel), an Obatzdn (soft cheese mix) and other stuff I can't remember. You would think I gained pounds and pounds during this trip. But no, I actually lost three pounds. I attribute it to all the walking we did...

Yelp
German people are always eating pretzels. They totally fit their stereotype as much as they don't want to. The best thing about this place is the fried whole fish and the GIGANTIC pretzels. The weird thing was that you had to get your own cup and clean it. Then they filled it for you. I had a little lemonade in mine (which I wish I didn't). The beer was too light and it just got way too sweet with it. Next time I'll pass on the lemonade :)

Yelp
A wonderful Biergarten located in the beautiful Hirschgarten. The food is very good with many seasonal choices to go along with a large menu with plenty of venison and other options. They serve Augustiner so the beer is great. Service is friendly and quick. Atmosphere is fantastic.

Yelp
This is what a biergarten is meant to be. This is wonderful. This is magical. I fucking love this place. It is huge. Tons of seating under the vibrant, rustling trees. It is comely. It is filled with beautiful families, locals and tourist alike. Though, it seemed to have more of a local feel due to the location. The beer is Augustiner from the barrel. Fantastic!! Grab a mug, give it a rinse, fill it up and repeat. The restaurant serviced tables provide Konig Ludwig Dunkel. I opted for the steckerlfisch (pay by the kilogram mackerel that is cooked and seasoned perfectly. These things are MEATY.) We also shared a huge pretzel and the wife hit up the ice cream stand. A lot of basic biergarten fare to choose from at the food counters. If taking the train, once you leave Hirschgarten station turn left on the bridge then left again to reach the main entrance. We went down from the bridge to the right and followed a straight jogging path to a nice residential community and hooked into the park that way. Seemed to take longer. The park itself is wondrous. If we had a park like this in Indy, I would be a park junky. The large pen filled with deer, goats and rams was nice and I am sure the kids love it.

Yelp
Having lived in Munich for almost two years and not having visited the biggest Biergarten was getting to me so finally today I made it with some guests. It's located quite close to the Schloss Nymphenburg and is located in the middle of a big park. There is a table service area that is very big and of course, the Biergarten has a few sections. It's sheer size means you are likely to find a seat even on busy days. We decided to sit in the table service area, as it was in direct sun and, it was the perfect day for a full on sunny table :-)) The menu is huge and there is all the Biergarten classics here. We ordered a few dishes and I must admit the food lacked a punch for me and, slightly lacking in flavor. This is quite unusual in a Biergarten as, the food in many of the ones I have been to is pretty good. I left half my fleischpfanzerl behind as it was a bit bland. I rarely ever leave food behind ;-)) I can tick off this place as "been there done that". I will probably be back here with guests and others. We live close to some wonderful Biergartens so my life won't be incomplete if I don't come here often ;-))

Yelp
What can you say, this is the largest biergarten in the world! It's also one of the best I've ever been too. Whether you sit in the 10,000 seat biergarten or dine at the traditional restaurant/inn, the food, bier and Gemutlichkeit here is second to none. Set in a beautiful little park that used to be the kings hunting grounds (you can still see the Reindeer or "Hirsch", get it?) in a little enclosure. The bier is Augustiner (obviously the best) and I love how you have to pull your Mass out of a little stall and wash it before handing it to the beer pourer. It's also one of the more affordable biergartens in Munich and the food is great. I think they have the absolute best chicken here and the Stecklerfisch is unreal. This is a must visit for visitors in Munich and we always bring our friends who come into town. On a sunny summer day, this is the place to be in the MUC!

Yelp
Biggest Biergarten in Munich! Great Location, good food and drinks. It's really crowded most of the time, but since it's so huge there's no problem finding a table.

Yelp
Just like all the pictures I've seen before traveling to Germany. We can now cross this place from our list of things to do, eat and see in Munich. Great selection of beer and food. My favorite is the grilled mackerel.

Robert Z.

Yelp
My family originally had inside seated reservations. At which point a very nice employee encouraged us to seat outside which we did, it was at this point that things went downhill. Our appointed waiter gave us menus and immediately asked us what we wanted to drink. My error was to hurry my family and order something, in my wish to be polite I put up with this poor service. As the waiter left I saw a annoyed face which I found insulting. My teenage son's took note of how we were treated and Germans were treated, there was a clear difference. In the end my nice guy attitude here in Germany is gone and God help the next person who treats us like that. We speny a fair penny for the meal and will never go there again. American's go where you're hard earned money and you are respected.

Yelp
Nice beer garden at the entrance of the Hirschgarten. Only drawback is that during the week-end they only service Mass which is not ideal if you just want a smaller beer. However, it is nice that they have Tegerneseer which I haven't found in any other beer garden in Munich.

Yelp
Except for an apropos emphasis on deers, Wirtshaus im Hirschgarten is no different from other Bavarian restaurants. EXCEPT for their "Culinary trips" aka All-You-Can-Eat buffets, which is the first I have seen in a Biergarten and also all I can speak for in this review. A friend recommended coming here for their "All You Can Eat" buffets, which start after 6 PM and offers a variety of main dishes, sides, and dessert. The type of buffet changes daily, ranging from "Around the Roulade" to "American BBQ" to "Pasta Italiana." From buffet prices ranging from 12 to 17.50 EUR, it is a bargain! We came for the "Steak Tag," which is all about steaks. They offered (1) 4 choices of steaks: pork neck, pork loin, Ribeye, and a version of beef rump steak (Rinderhüftsteak), (2) 4 choices of dips: BBQ, sweet chili, sour cream, and herb butter, (3) fries/potato gratin/baked potatoes, (4) salad buffet of greens, red beets, olives, cabbage slaws, etc, and (5) Millirahm-Apfelstrudel (milk-cream apple strudel) with homemade vanilla and strawberry ice creams. All for 12.30 EUR. The steaks were cooked nicely. The beef steaks were medium, juicy, and tender. Unfortunately, during the entire dinner, I managed to get only one piece of ribeye and the rest of the beef steaks was the beef rump. The potato sides were made to perfection. The salad bar and dessert were decent. In addition with our Augustiner beers, we left the restaurant stuffed and nearly passing out from food coma. I could easily come back to try their other buffet selections.

Yelp
If you go to Munich then you must attend a bier garten. It's the best place to chill out with some friends and enjoy life. There are quite a few beer gardens and this is the largest. The expansive space in the middle of the city is beautiful. Trees, grass, food and beer while sitting in a beautiful place with cool refreshing air and nice people. The setting is so pleasant but the restaurant itself isn't really fancy, but you are going to sit outside anyways. There is some indoor seating if it is too cold but that is not a problem from june-august. I am curious about the buffet but I tried the Hilde-goulasch or deer stew. I forget what the orange buttery stuff is called, but it is rich and you can spread it on your pretzel while you enjoy your afternoon beers. There is so much room and bike paths and cool stuff that this is a must do at least once and then go ride your bike around and check out some others.

Yelp
My favorite beer garten in Munich - deer everywhere, beautiful park, good beer and food!! Do get: - fish on a stick (note: price displayed is per kg (or some metric measurement) so don't be fooled!) - half hendl - liters, plural, of beer - cheese spread and pretzels - sugar donut looking things Do bring: - picnic table cloth - blankets - deer food - cards, dice, other game devices - your cheery self

Yelp
Might be regarded as the biggest biergarten in the world, but I wasn't too impressed by the entire set-up. Maybe because it was set-up so plainly, and there was nothing particularly notable aside from the large(but plain) array of tables on tables, I much prefer the Chinesischer Tum Biergarten in the English Gartens. There are stands marking the outside of the garten, along with a few larger ones in the middle, and they did have some interesting ones(the chocolate and sweets one definitely caught my in). Food seemed to be standard biergarten fare, so that and the beer(again standard biergarten price of $8/liter) was nothing remarkable, but good for it's purpose. A good place if you're closeby, but if you only had to visit one biergarten in Munich my vote is for the Chinesischer Tum Garten. A sidenote...this place is a little hard to find so if you are lost, head toward the direction of drunk people. Or brush up on your german and start asking the locals.

Yelp
Wonderful, festive atmosphere. We sat outdoors and it was like a big party. The roast pork was incredibly tender and flavorful and the wurst was the best. Excellent beer, great food, fantastic atmosphere and helpful, friendly staff... What more could you for?!

Yelp
"Biggest biergarten in the whole world!" : not sure if it is a legend or not, but it makes your beer more special if you believe it, doesn't it? Everything you can expect from a Biergarten, in a especially green place, surrounded by a huge park and far away from city noises. Just perfect after a visit of the Nymphenburg castle, just a few minutes away walking.

Yelp
The value for the food was very good. Food good, atmosphere German Beer Garden. Very large. My only objection was our food did not come at the same time.

Yelp
The setting is lovely, but the food and service leave a LOT to be desired. A nice spot to gather with friends (bring your own food!) to enjoy some sun and (expensive) beverages; this place always seems to have free seats, even on the nicest, warmest weekend -- that alone makes it worth a visit!
google avatar

Yelp
this one is really one of my favorite biergartens. only reason i don't go regularly is it is quite a distance for me. love the Augustiner beer of course. It feels less touristy and more like locals place -- even though it is truly enormous. don't forget to go say hello to the deer.

Yelp
It seems dubious, out in the middle of nowhere away from town. As we walked through a quiet residential neighbourhood to get there I had second thoughts. But it's simply fantastic. Great appearance, excellent food, seems completely authentic, very reasonable prices, not even crowded on Saturday night. Would definitely make the trek again.

Yelp
A walk through Hirschgarten, ending with some incredible food (boiled beef and spinach dish was wayyyy better than it sounds in English) and great Hells beer. This is this very vibrant, community feeling that I really enjoy.

Yelp
Delicious menü very fast serving and very cool environment ...I strongly recommend ..prices are resonable

Yelp
Food is good and well priced. Nice Bavarian atmosphere with plenty of locals, not as touristy as most beer gardens in the city center.

Yelp
Quite a large beer garden with a number of locations from which one can get their beer. What makes it even more interesting is that you can make a day of this place with the family. There is a small deer enclosure right next to the beer garden which will keep kids occupied for hours. And the park with 3 different childrens play areas and picnic locations is quite large with some aussies practicing their form of football on the grounds occasionaly.

Yelp
The Hirschgarten is one of the most beautiful Biergärten in Munich. It has everything a good Biergarten needs- lots of space, old chestnut trees, and delicious food and beer. The beer served here is Augustiner Bräu, one of the few breweries that has refused to up their production quotas for export purposes and which is famed among locals for it's consistent high quality and taste. As in any real Munich Biergarten, you can bring your own food or buy something from the stands. The offers are all Bavarian Biergarten classics- Schweinshaxn (roast pork leg), Spare ribs, sausages and Kraut, and the most delicious of it all- Steckerlfisch. Steckerlfisch (literally "fish on a stick") is just that- fish (mackerel or trout) dry-rubbed with salt, pepper and spices, and slowly roasted over wood coals. It is sold by weight, together with lemon slices (sides are up to you) and it is incredible! I recommend getting the mackerel, the fatty firm meat and crispy skin just goes incredibly well with cold Augustiner and some homemade potato salad. The spare ribs are also good, as are the delicious Auszogne, deep-fried donuts sprinkled with sugar. A word of warning- you can bring food, not drinks! The staff will definitely overlook the occasional bottle of juice or mineral water (best kept under the table), but bringing your own beer is a serious no-no. I am particularly partial to this place because it is my father's favorite Biergarten, and he used to bring us here almost every Sunday during the summer. And he was right about it- the Hirschgarten is a wonderful place for kids, who can roam around the tables or look at the deer in the animal corral behind the Biergarten. The Hirschgarten gets it's name from this deer corral, which is the last remnant of a royal wildlife preserve that once encompassed what is now a popular park. The Hirschgarten is special because it is mostly unknown to tourists, has a very mixed clientele coming from all ages and all walks of life, and it successfully manages to avoid the urge to go all fancy and upper-crust like many Munich traditional establishments do. From old to young, from yuppie to punk, you can find almost anybody relaxing there on a hot summer day . It is also situated in the middle of a beautiful park, with no roads, cars, or other noisy disturbances around- if you don't count the occasional sunday lunch getting rowdy because of too much Augustiner.

R D.

Yelp
The Hirschgarten is the largest beer garden in Munich. They have capacity for something like 10,000 guests. It's located in a park near the Laim S-bahn station (about a 15 minute walk). Each day, they have a special all-you-can-eat menu for a pretty reasonable price (ask when you get there and they will direct you to the right section), however they may cancel it if they don't have any advance reservations. Their regular menu should still be available. Their all-you-can-eat selection is quite good and includes salad and dessert.

Dana M.

Yelp
Nice location, friendly service, low key and a good place to meet up with friends. Food was okay and heavy.
