The Most Beautiful Covered Bridges in America

"Not far from the Gettysburg Battlefield, you'll find the Sachs Bridge. During the Civil War, Union Army soldiers used it to access a field hospital and the Confederate Army retreated across the bridge after the Union won the battle." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Just one more piece of history in an already jam-packed area full of it. Hard to imagine what happened here with the serene landscape.

August 26, 2024 - One of Best covered bridges to visit in Pennsylvania, Sachs or Saucks Covered Bridge ! Almost 100 feet long, using the wooden Lattice Truss system designed by Engineer Ithiel Town , built by David Stoner in 1852 or 1854 or 1856 * * As you research the year, you can see historical markers that highlight a different year ? History can be debated, just cite your source. ( see photos of historical signs) Sachs bridge is in Adams County, located a few miles south of Gettysburg Battlefield. Seems General Lee’s Confederates withdrew from the 3 day battle in July , 1863 to retreat back to Virginia. Locals captured 3 Confederate Soldiers, thought them to be spies, or deserters they were hanged from the covered bridge. Stories of their ghosts who haunt the Sachs Bridge, continue today. * Fun Facts * +Sachs Bridge Most Historic in 1938 PA +1968 Sachs Bridge closed to vehicles +1980 Sachs Bridge . . . Have been here many times and seen some amazing things. From orbs to hearing voices. And one of the most amazing ones was. Tennessee. He will puff on a lit cigarette when prompted to and physically move it

We heard the bridge was haunted, just wanted to go check it out. It's actually a beautiful area and quite relaxing. No weird vibes for us, even though some folks were doing a paranormal investigation. We sat and watched their work, but really just enjoyed a nice peaceful riverside in the country. A nice place to visit for Ghosts and humans 😉

Google
Beautiful views and a lot of history here. Many reports of ghost sightings although I personally have never seen anything. There are also some pretty good trails along the creek if you don’t mind walking through some forestry. Pictures are posted from both a sunny normal day and a rainy day with a flood. I’ve also seen many fisherman here so this seems to be a good fishing spot as well.

Yelp
Awesome place to visit while ghost hunting. Try to go on a weekday to avoid the teenie boppers and the crowds.

Yelp
This is a beautiful bridge. There definitely are not any ghosts here or anywhere in Gettysburg. But this is a cool place to visit. I went late at night to check it out. There was a family lighting a cigarette on a railing and then freaking out when it inevitably fell over from the cig getting small and gravity doing its job. The view around the bridge is pretty cool. We need more covered bridges.

Yelp
Its a cute little spot. You can see locals come here for fishing. Or if your in search for an instagram worthy spot this is it. I came here looking for ghosts, but that is probably better at night. This bridge had the Union and Confederate army walk across both directions during the civil war, on their way to Gettysburg. It is considered the most historic bridge in Pennsylvania.

Yelp
Very pretty bridge. Can't drive over it. Love a covered bridge but I've seen many. Nothing terrible special about this other than it's pretty and has history attached to it. The plaque with info is too worn out to read.

Yelp
I'm so glad we went about 10 minutes out of our way heading to Gettysburg to seek out this beautiful, historic covered bridge. Nestled in the back of farmland, this rustic, red 100-foot structure is a picturesque scene for any history buff or bridge lover! I "support" both! The crisscross design is gorgeous and the stone supports on either side adds a stunning contrast to the landscape. Stretching over Marsh Creek, and mini "waterfall", this covered bridge has a plaque describing its significance in the Civil War, used by both Union and Confederate soldiers. The sound of the trickling of the water is a treat for the senses. We came to this sight in the late fall, and I'm sure it'll be breathtaking in the spring! We are returning!!

Yelp
Covered bridges are not just an eastern states thing but we have plenty. I love them and visit any I come across. This particular bridge is known to be the most haunted bridge in America. Well, I can't speak to any ghost sightings, but while there, I saw a group trying to entice a ghost to take a puff on a cigarette. So it's definitely a thing. The bridge itself is in good condition. At one point high water pushed it off it's base and the state put it back in place and increased it's height over the water to keep it safe. Built in 1852 it is one of the few remaining built using a lattice system of support trusses. It is over this bridge that the Confederate army of Virginia began it's retreat after the battle of Gettysburg, so definitely should be on your tour of Gettysburg.

Yelp
Circa 1854 at 100 feet long. The Sachs Covered Bridge, also known as Sauck's Covered Bridge and Waterworks Covered Bridge, is a 100-foot, Town truss covered bridge over Marsh Creek between Cumberland and Freedom Townships, Adams County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania.

Yelp
Off the normal path but worth the effort. Living in California we don't see covered bridges. This one doesn't have vehicle traffic go through it anymore. Very close to Gettysburg so if you are visiting that site this is a good side trip. I saw fish in the river and I got the impression people do fish here. This is a very picturesque place. It was raining during are visit. I can only imagine how beautiful it would be with the sun shining.

Yelp
We visited the historic Sachs Covered Bridge on a crisp fall night, and when we walked onto it there was nice moonlight. As we were exiting the bridge a storm burst hit us that blew down large tree limbs and much cold rain. Was pretty sudden and unexpected. The Sachs Covered Bridge was built around 1854 at a cost of $1,544. On July 1, 1863, the bridge was crossed by the two brigades of the I Corps of the Union Army heading towards Gettysburg. The III Corps also crossed the bridge heading to the Black Horse Tavern. Four days later, the majority of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia retreated over the bridge after the Union victory in the Battle of Gettysburg. The original stood until June 19, 1996 when a flash flood knocked the bridge from one of its abutments and it incurred substantial damage. It was restored with most of the original and rededicated on July 21, 1997.

Yelp
I really like covered bridges .. they are interesting, romantic and a piece of history. There is no charge to visit this peaceful and beautiful bridge. You can only be at the bridge after dark when you're with a tour or if you park on "the other side" which is privately owned. This is a popular ghost tour . and on several lists as one of the most haunted places in the country. Pennsylvania is covered with covered bridges but few have this history or haunted reputation. This covered bridge was severely damaged in a flood several years ago. It has been restored. I love covered bridges and this was a great one.

Yelp
This place is cool and creepy at the same time. This is my second time here and each time is a new experience. My first was in the dark with a group and we had an evp. I am not sure if the place is actually haunted, but overall is great to visit and has a beautiful view.

Yelp
Loved visiting this historical bridge in Gettysburg. Nice views of the river and certainly worth taking a trip if you are in the area. Check out the stories related to this spot as it adds a lot to your visit.

Sherry W.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing and the historical story is priceless. Nothing like a small town in America.

Abbie M.

Yelp
It's a beautiful location. I went because I'm into spirits and haunted destinations. We went there with our ouija board and picked up a lot of activity so if you're coming here for the paranormal aspect it's great! It's also nice to just come around here and enjoy nature. (:

Lisa B.

Yelp
Great place to visit. Beautiful scenery and great for taking pictures. You can't drive across the bridge but it's definitely worth getting out and walking around. It was gorgeous. It's known to be haunted but we didn't notice anything spooky when we were there. I'm sure a night there is an eerie feeling to the place. Not too far from the battlefield. Definitely worth the stop.

Alex C.

Yelp
It's interesting to look at, but the informational sign needs some repair (parts are illegible due to scratching) and there isn't one on the other side of the bridge. There is also some graffiti but that is easily overlooked by the beauty of the bridge.
