I consider this museum, which I discovered quite unexpectedly through the Lonely Planet guide, to be far more interesting than the İzmir Archaeology Museum. Located in a modern complex (İzmir Kültür Sanat Fabrikası), the museum is organised thematically and is a real treat for anyone who, like me, loves history and archaeology, while also including some more ethnographic sections.
The parts I enjoyed the most are on the ground floor, especially the area on the left-hand side, featuring sculptures, sarcophagi and other pieces that are absolutely impressive.
As far as museums go, this is by far the most essential one to visit in İzmir. I was genuinely impressed. I would strongly recommend allowing at least one and a half to two hours to explore everything at a relaxed pace.
