Over 5 Million Tiny, Blue Flowers Have Bloomed in Japan's Hitachi Seaside Park | Travel + Leisure

"The current spring bloom at Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka, Japan, just two hours north of Tokyo, shows millions of tiny, blue flowers that blanket the park, according to Insider. The nemophila flowers, also known as “baby-blue eyes” and rurikarakusa in Japanese, are actually native to North America, not Japan, Insider reported. The beautiful blooms only grow to be less than an inch in diameter and about seven to eight inches tall, according to the park’s website, which makes the fact that these flowers have created a spread of baby blue on the hillside all the more impressive. Overall, there are 5.3 million individual flowers that make up these fields, an area of around 8.6 acres (3.5 hectares), according to Insider. Perhaps the most striking part of this year’s bloom is the total absence of people wandering the park’s paths trying to get a good photo of the colorful flowers. Hitachi Seaside Park has been closed since April 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic. But there’s more to Hitachi Seaside Park than the nemophila. The park in its entirety is about 469 acres (190 hectares), and there are several other areas where you can see spring blooms, such as daffodils in the Narcissus Garden and thousands of colorful tulips in the Tamago Flower Garden, according to Insider. There is also an amusement park with rides for the whole family. In the fall, the flowers are essentially replaced with fuzzy-looking red bushes called kochia. The kochia are green during the spring and summer and eventually turn red with the changing of the season. The baby-blue nemophila usually bloom between April and early May, so, unfortunately, most tourists will have to wait until next year to see them in person." - Travel + Leisure Editors

A big park with a hill that looks stunning in the spring and fall. You get blue nemophilas in the spring that is similar in colour to the sky, and red kochia bushes in the fall. There's a big picnic area and a theme park as well. In addition to Miharashi Hill, there are several other fields of flowers of various colours as well. Getting here from Katsuta Station is just one bus ride away. You can buy the unlimited travel ticket and entrance ticket from the station.

It was nice but not as expected, not like what it looks in the ad or pictures online so lower your expectation. Though, they have a large variety of plants and flowers which are distinctive for each season so you can come at anytime. Its a huge place, they not only have gardens but also an amusement park. The place has its own food stands so you dont have to prepare food in advance but idk ab the price.

One huge park by the sea. I simply went to see the marvelous kochia hill, but it turned out the park has so much to offer. Absolutely great for families. Has lots of various activities, from a simple picnic, bike riding, and a mini theme park. Even just enjoying the beautiful vista is already joyful. It’s almost 2 hours from Tokyo Station by train and continued with a local bus from Katsuta Station (appr. 17 minutes). Plenty of food and beverages vendors inside, but be prepared for the lines during weekend/holidays.

Hitachi Seaside Park is famous for its blue nemophila that bloom between mid-April and May. And the red kochia trees after mid-October. It offers many attractions with entertainment. Such as golf putting, biking, and other things for everyone. This was our first experience in this beautiful part. We enjoyed the cute red trees that transformed into a red color. We liked the rides in the amusement park as well. However, it would be nice if all the information were given a little bit more clearly. For example, the Ferris wheel. We were in line at the Ferris wheel for about 10-15 minutes already until we saw someone cut the line. We realized that we were in the wrong line. Moreover, the information for the one-day pass option for unlimited amusement rides should be at the entrance. One complaint is that all the paper tickets you need are inconvenient to hold on to and use. We held six different tickets while visiting the park. Perhaps if they combine all the tickets into one, everyone will benefit from this in the future. A small reminder, this place is near the ocean. That means there are strong winds so I would suggest that you bring a warm jacket with you.

A beautiful place! Easy to find, large carpark and was relatively cheap. I went to see the flower park but was happy to find out it has an amusement side, the array of food vendors,large gardens and various amusement rides made this a very pleasant experience. Food was reasonably priced, entry too! I would highly recommend for anyone to visit!

This is one of my favorite spots in Ibaraki. The park is spacious, containing an amusement park and plenty of activities for the family. The range of flowers was mesmerizing. For my first visit, I went to see the Nemophilia bloom. I was not disappointed. In fact, I was enthralled by the beauty. There are seasonal flowers here, so a season pass is highly recommended. I plan on returning soon to see the summer flowers. One thing to note is there is a tendency for long lines. If you visit during peak hours and days (such as a weekend), then don’t be alarmed by the line. Overall, this is a great place for the family to have a nature day. It’s also a great place for those who love flowers and amusement parks. I highly recommend! (All photos were taken by me on an iPhone 16 Pro).

Very nice park by the Pacific Ocean. We came at the beginning of October some of Kochia (Red bush plants) started to change color. The walking paths are nice and well paved. Wheelchair friendly We parked at West Gate and walked not too long around 20 mins to Kochia hill.

Breathtaking flower paradise! Hitachi Seaside Park is absolutely stunning — a must-visit for nature and photography lovers. The seasonal flowers, especially the blue nemophila in spring and red kochia in autumn, create incredible views that look like a painting. The park is wide, clean, and beautifully maintained, perfect for walking, cycling, or just relaxing in nature. A peaceful and unforgettable day trip from Tokyo!

Opening it's doors around 9:00am, I was greeted with lots of friendly and colorful blooms of different flowers at only 400 Yen. I was especially jealous of school children who were exploring these breathtaking field trips to whimsical fields of tulips and dahlia's! Ice cream vending machines were spotted throughout the park. My original plan was to explore Hitachi Sea Side Park, and then take a bus to Katakuen Park, but it took me a whole day to see everything here. There was a small shuttle that can take you around the 8 stops of the park, but I chose to walk throughout all of them. There were restrooms left and right, so you know that it wasn't going to be a long walk. Just FYI, these are traditional Japanese bathrooms and require you to squat. No sitting down. They had a very nice amusement park within Hitachi, and the 400 Yen ticket was included to visit this darling place. I did get a sunburn on my feet from wearing flip flops that lasted a whole year round, so please put sunscreen on your entire body, not missing one spot because it took a whole year for that to clear up. I wasn't complaining. I took a bus back to Mito, which was amazing. There are taxis that stop by this park as well. I suggest the BUS!

Hands down one of the best land marks to visit when in Japan. Hitachi seaside park puts the California poppy blooms to shame. There's so many varieties of colorful flowers. Fields of them. And another area dedicated to tulips. The weather is amazing during the spring. A must visit for photos and amazing scenery to view with your loved one. It can get super crowded but everyone is so polite. There is a designated trail and it's refreshing to see everyone respecting the flowers to stay on path unlike vain instagrammers who trampled all over the poppies in CA. There's also bicycle rentals for about 400 yen for 3 hours which is neat. I want to return during the autumn season as the blooms change to red kochias. Highly recommend!! There's also a few cafes around too. There's an amusement park area for the kids too. I can't wait to return and bring my kids when they're older, it's very family friendly for everyone. About 400ish Yen for adults and 100ish Yen for children to enter.

Everything about this park is simply beautiful. Nature truly speaks to you here. This has to be a whole day event, the park has a lot to offer from trails to kids rides. It can get pretty crowed on weekends but it's so worth going indeed.
