17 Best Beaches Near New York City, From New Jersey to Connecticut | Condé Nast Traveler

"For an affordable Hamptons escape, I find Hither Hills a smart choice: from Memorial Day through Labor Day parking is just $10 for access to an extensive beach with surfable waves, fishing areas, bathrooms with showers, and a concession stand, and if I want to stay overnight beach camping is available for about $35 a night." - Laura Dannen Redman

7 Best Day Trips from New York City

"Hither Hills is a network of trails that stretches across the narrow Montauk peninsula from the Long Island Sound to the Atlantic. Parts of it are heavily forested, best for mountain bikers or trail runners looking to get their miles in; the rest are open sand dunes that stretch onto a skinny, quiet beach on the sound, perfect for an adventurous walk or a picnic. Don't miss the Walking Dunes trail for its dramatic sandy bowls. In all, it's a respite from the rest of the Hamptons and a cool, totally unspoiled landscape to explore." - Alex Van Buren, Andrea Whittle, Devra Ferst

Hither Hills is a favorite of ours. It is quiet and peaceful when we go in April. The beach is beautiful but eroded from last year. The bathrooms and showers are a plus. The town has an IGA where you can pick up groceries. White's drug store has whatever else you may need plus a gift shop. There are numerous restaurants to choose from. At times, the sound of the waves at night is so soothing it lulls me to sleep. There is a nice picnic area with tables and barbecues and a great playground.

Easily our favorite beach in the Hamptons. $10/day parking, super clean bathrooms, snack bar, lifeguards after Labor Day.

Love the place, not the over burdensome rules for families camping with different members back and forth with different cars

Nice quiet camping with the sound of the ocean as a constant background. The wind off the ocean was pretty consistent but not enough to drive off the mosquitos. This place is more popular with RV camping but you can set up two tents (but no more! Despite the presence of house-sized RVs, you're not allowed more than two tents and they'll absolutely make you take them down if you try). There aren't tall trees so no hammocks or overhead tarping are likely to happen. Bathrooms are clean. Showers are free and warm. There's a general store. During the day, the beach is full of people.

Beautiful beach with a campground and all the facilities necessary.

Hither hills campground. I have to say one of the best bathrooms I've ever seen at a campground. They also have family bathrooms and super large showers 😜.No pull string water control is the best. There's a nice size playground for the kids or big adults. All the sites are back in. There is no privacy between sites and every site is completely open.Everyone is very friendly. They actually have a general store that sells beer. They sell wood at the main office $7 a bundle. It was worth it . On the back side of the main office building they have air fill up the station. If you're coming back from wheeling this is nice. From where we camped we were literally on the other side of the dune to the beach. There are no hookups so you have to be self-contained. There are water spickets around the campgrounds. So if you do pick a site that is close to one of these water stations you might get some extra foot traffic near your site. Something to think about when choosing a spot. We really had a great time and you're only 10 minutes away from town which was also very nice. We will definitely be returning.

This campground is amazing. I love falling asleep to the sound of the waves. Every once in a while with the nake eye you can see whales and dolphins. The campers are courtesy, respectful and helpful.

If you love boondock camping and the beach, Hither Hills State Park campground is the perfect combination of both. Nestled off Old Montauk Highway, the campsites are spacious with easy access to the beach just over the sand dunes. Clean toilets and showers are within short walking distance from each site. A general store is onsite with basic necessities and a grill for quick breakfast/lunch items. Beware and reserve 6-9 months in advance of your trip during peak summer season which requires a minimum stay of 7 days. Also plan for limited cellphone service. But once you’re here, relax by your tent or camper, sleep on the beach, or explore the surrounding villages east or west of the park. We’re hoping to make this an annual place to visit! The camp office staff was very helpful throughout our stay specially Jeanny who gave us a lot of guidance and recommendations since it was our first time in the area!

Yelp
Nothing honestly compares to the montauk beaches in my opinion. The ability as a local to be able to drive on and spend the day at the beach really makes the experience. Even on a crowded day usually the next closest person is at least a half mile or more down the beach from you. This specific beach even has some off road trails that lead to the other side of the island for a fun drive.

Yelp
With multiple check-in locations known as "Hither Hills State Park" I wasn't sure which one was the real Slim Shady (as once said long ago). But this page has the Old Montauk Highway address and so it gets the nod (and the review!). Yesterday was my second time coming to Hither Hills and it blew me away again. Not from any strong winds, but just the sheer beauty of the place. I came with my girlfriend on both visits (she was the one who suggested it two summers ago) and it was strictly for beach purposes. Hither Hills holds much more than some Long Island coastline, but I don't camp or fish so I can't factor these parts in (though it's nice to know they have them here!). What had us returning was the feeling of being on a beach that was somewhere other than on Long Island. A beach that didn't have thousands of people. Water that wasn't full of seaweed. A walk to the sand that took under a minute. There's just some kind of amazing aura about Hither Hills, or just Montauk beaches in general, that strips away the negatives and raises the positives. A few other little nods (besides the beauty of the ocean) starts with the general store near the parking lot. It's complete with beach essentials, food for order, adult beverages, and a few souvenirs. The snack bar, which is a little closer to the action, also has some of this stuff and is right by the relatively clean bathrooms (for a beach!). You'll also see the lifeguard stand which is nice to know, just in case Jaws shows up. We witnessed a police officer riding by on a ATV as well which is always a good sign just knowing the beach is patrolled, keeping it friendly and safe. Overall, Hither Hills State Park is incredibly beautiful, and did I mention it's only $10 to get in? It's worth every penny and honestly double that. We'd probably come more often if it wasn't a slight trek, even from her more Suffolk abode. But regardless of distance (and Yelp page confusions), I know we'll be back. Come Hither, my friends.

Yelp
My favorite State Park thats a beach too. Located just before the town of Montauk, it has plenty of parking (that were spaced out with cones during COVID). The beach itself is a short walk from the parking lot too. They also take in campers & camping vehicles. The beach itself is nice and clean. We have found some large seashells here too. So the kids have fun with that. My favorite part of this park is the shower areas they provide. If you are doing a day trip to Montauk, this place is a life saver so that you can still enjoy the evening in town and not have sand all over you :)

Yelp
Family has been going here since the 1940's...only gripe is the prices they charge in the general store and the people that worked there this past summer. I made a comment to my aunt regarding the syrup costing nearly $5 - it was srtop and shop brand - and how insane it was to be paying that. The older woman behind the counter heard me and shot comment back with an attitude "honey, we don't charge anymore than the food store so I don't know what your're complaining about". I replied back with "don't call me honey. I wasn't speaking to you and lastly, this is stop and shop brand, see the symbol it doesn't cost more than $2.00". I would have complained but it would have been worthless. Hopefully next year they have better people.

Yelp
Started camping here 30 years ago! For the last 5 years we have spent Memorial Day at Hither Hills. We are tent campers. This year, 5/27/17, we arrived on Friday of Memorial Day Weekend. After many years of excellent camping, this year was different! The site, in the A row, was small, even for 2 small tents. There was broken glass on the ground, a lot of it, right where the tents would go. I asked for a new site, I was told every site was taken, sold out, even though there were 20+ sites empty. But the real bad news is, TICKS, TICKS, TICKS!!! Within 30 minutes every member of our family had ticks on them! The ticks were EVERYWHERE! AND NO they do not spray for ticks, I asked! There were no large signs warning us of the danger in the park! The tall grass next to the site was too close to the camping area, Our 8 x 12 tents were literally against the cement pad on one side and against the tall grass on the other side!. Even the "cut grass" was 6 high! This NOT an inconvenience, this is life threatening! Babesiosis, Lyme, Anaplasmosis and Erhlichioisis. This is a real hazard! Two members of my family have been in the hospital because of past issues with these diseases, NYS Parks, this one is on you. We did not wander into the tall grass, the ticks are everywhere! Yes, we wore white socks so we could see the ticks, and we saw them! Yes, we applied DEET based spray, several times a day! And YES, we still had ticks crawling on us! I pulled one off myself, and my two daughters! Was it a mild winter, yes, and that means ticks will flourish. This is a real hazard that MUST be warned against. Thinking twice about going next year.
