Hjálparfoss

We made this detour off the GCR - about 1 hour from the Kerið crater. Definitely off the beaten path. Parking is free and there are hardly any visitors at all. We had the whole place to ourselves for a long time. Beautiful waterfall. Pretty short one compared to others. The drive out here is beautiful with snow capped mountains in the distance with rivers and lakes in the foreground. It was freezing cold and windy when we went in December so we didn’t stay out too long.

Hjálparfoss is one of Iceland’s most unique and picturesque waterfalls. Located in the Þjórsárdalur valley, it is famous for its beautiful twin cascades that flow side by side into a calm pool below. Surrounded by striking basalt columns and dark volcanic rock formations, Hjálparfoss feels both dramatic and harmonious at the same time. The name means “Help’s Waterfall,” as it was once a welcome sight for travelers crossing the harsh highlands — a place where horses could rest and drink. Easily accessible and less crowded than some of Iceland’s larger falls, Hjálparfoss offers a peaceful stop with stunning natural symmetry and powerful beauty.

Large free parking, short walk down to the view point. You can get down to the waters edge. There were toilets there but they were not open.

A quick and nice visit on our way out to Haifoss. A good "warmup" that was calm and serene. The 2 falls join together into a wide pool below where 2 people were fishing. A short and interesting walk along the rim to get a few vantage points as well.

Really cool waterfall. I didn't see anything else like this on my trip around the island. Easy and plenty of parking (wasn't crowded at all when we went mid afternoon on Sunday, mid-April 2025). Great views right from the parking lot. This seemed to be a less traveled part of the island, but that could also be attributed to going during the shoulder season.

Beautiful falls. Easy to locate on Google maps and plenty of parking. Was not populated at all with tourists. Just be careful if climbing down the rocks to reach the water. Ideal to go on a nice weather day to take some pictures around the area. You will not regret the visit!

Very beautiful and impressive even in October with rain and fog

Beautiful waterfall experience. Easy to access, with a parking area a few minutes off of the main road. Short trail from the parking area down to the waterfall. Incredible views, and you can get close to the falls.
