You'll find no shortage of traditional sweet shops along Sh Hamad Ave in Muharraq. Out of all the stores, one of them is quite noteworthy!
Hussain Mohammed Showaiter Sweets is one of the most iconic and historic establishments in Muharraq, serving as a cornerstone of the Kingdom's cultural identity since the mid-19th century.
History and Legacy
The story of this legendary confectionary began in the 1850s with the founder, Jasim Mohammed Showaiter. A merchant and pearl diver, Showaiter is said to have discovered the art of making caramelized sugar sweets during his travels to Najaf, Iraq. Upon returning to Bahrain, he reinvented the recipe by incorporating local aromatic ingredients like saffron, cardamom, and rose water.
The business has been operating for over 170 years and is currently managed by the sixth generation of the Showaiter family. The shop's heritage is so significant that it is featured in the Bahrain National Museum. The family even donated a 170-year-old copper halwa pot to the museum as a historical monument.
Generous Hospitality: It is standard practice for staff to offer free samples of different halwa varieties so you can taste the nuances before purchasing.
Cultural Ritual: During the pearl diving era, divers and merchants would take this high-energy halwa on their long trips. Today, it remains a staple for Ramadan iftars, weddings, and royal gatherings across the Gulf.
Signature Sweets
The "Queen of Sweets" at Showaiter is the Bahraini Halwa, a glossy, chewy delicacy made from cornstarch, sugar, ghee, and nuts.
Yellow Halwa (King of Halwa): A classic, rich variety known for its vibrant color and deep flavor.
Premium Saffron Halwa (Red Halwa): A fan favorite infused with high-quality saffron and rose water, typically topped with crunchy almonds or cashews.
Specialty Delights: Beyond halwa, the shop is famous for its crispy Samboosa filled with nuts, Mattai (savory, spicy snacks), and Rahash (a tahini-based dessert).
Custom Blends: They also offer exclusive products like Sangeen Tea, a premium blend imported from Sri Lanka, and specialty Arabic coffee meant to be paired with their sweets.
