Wilderness Safaris Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe?I'd been to Namibia before, but landing at Hoanib after cruising up the Skeleton Coast was spectacular. Rusty dunes, shipwrecks, seals, lions, elephants, and zebras—it's primordial and lonely. I loved every second of my stay here. What's the backstory?Wilderness Safaris is one of the most reputable safari agencies in Africa, and taking on this property was a risk because of its location, but it's got all the necessary chops to deliver above and beyond. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book?My tent was comfortable and had limited power and A/C. There were moths and small bugs in the sink, though nothing big. It's wild out there. I didn't hang out in the room much. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?Loads of fresh and nicely cooked wild game meat. Great rooibos tea and excellent oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies. The food was really nice, but vegetables were scarce. Breakfast was good, but limited. And the service?Service was the best I'd had in Africa. The kindest and the most informative. My guide Elias was sharp and deeply knowledgable about the animals and the human-animal conflict. The one-on-one experience with Elias was deeply enriching, and the lack of Wi-Fi was wonderful. Don't miss the jeep trip to the coast, but prepare for the putrid smells of seal colonies. What type of travelers will you find here?Hoanib hosted some of the most educated and traveled and knowledgeable group of guests I've encountered after 12 or so different safaris in seven African countries. There are a lot of scientific studies at the camp, so it draws serious conservationists and is not for the faint of heart. Discussions were mostly about poaching and how to identify and stop poachers. Some Californians, some Brits, Germans, Aussies, Canadians, Namibian nationals, and Swiss were in the mix. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? You're in the middle of the desert. The tented camps are solar-powered and fit into the landscape as well as anything would. I would come back here before I go to another camp, and Wilderness Safaris should promote their conservation methods even more. Is there anything you'd change?Pay guides and staff more. Use electric jeeps. Offer walking safaris. Engage with anti-poaching units more. Any other hotel features worth noting?Flights are not part of the stay. There's a pool, but I didn't use it much because it's so hot and sunny during the day, and too cold at night. Bottom line: Worth it? Why?Absolutely, because it offered a rarified safari experience in the Namib Desert and Skeleton Coast that you cannot get elsewhere." - Adam H. Graham

Moved on to Hoanib Skeleton Coast camp, An absolutely beautiful desert location. We thought we would struggle to see much wildlife, thought it would be more the scenery which is incredibly stunning. How wrong could we be. Desert elephants, desert lions (Obie, Bravo & Charlie) and even a mother cheetah and her cub. The setting of Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp was stunning and the accomodation beautiful. Our guide was Vincent, quite brilliant. The staff were wonderful. Food and drink Awesome. The day trip to the Skeleton coast itself was fantastic, although a long drive, but made up by a wonderful lunch in the beach and a short flight back.

This camp has everything you would need. Just five minutes from the landing strip you arrive at the stunning camp with wonderful tented rooms that are perfectly placed near a watering hole where animals come regularly.|You will be greeted by a song - Yvonne has a truly beautiful voice and the whole team join in. A really warm welcome and goodbye.|Ben our guide was enthusiastic kind and patient and looked after us so well including hot water bottles ( bush babies) in our beds at night and in the van early in the morning. We had sunrise and sunset trips, a day at the skeleton coast ( where Marion produced a paella for our picnic!). We ate delicious food, and tracked wild animals with help from Richard. The guides all work in harmony . So nice to see. And we even had time to have massages with Elina who was fantastic - so relaxing. It was a magical place and an unforgettable experience. Thank you Team Hoanib at Wilderness.

Our stay at Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp was truly incredible. Located in one of the remotest corners of the world, you really feel like you are on a different planet. Not only are the landscapes incredible - Dunes leading to the Coast, rocky mountains into flat plains - the national park also has a healthy and diverse wildlife population. During our stay - we saw so many desert adapted species including Springbok, Oryx, Giraffe, Elephants and the most famous desert adapted lions in the area that have learned how to hunt seals on the beach - a truly spectacular sight. The rooms are incredibly luxurious and located at the base of the mountain - with a waterhole that is frequented by all types of wildlife throughout the day. You don't even need to leave the lodge to see Elephants and Lions. For such a remote camp- they somehow mange to bring in the freshest food, and have incredible diverse menus for all meals. Nothing seems like too much effort for this team. All food is also recycled in a sustainable way, and the camp is 100% solar powered. What really makes this camp memorable are the people who work there. By the time we left at the end of three nights, we felt like family. Thank you to our brilliant guide, William and Camp Managers, Jonathan, Hilde and Lizelle. Our camp staff - Phiroza, Limbo and McDonald. All of you made this trip one of our best yet!!

I have to say for a lodge in the middle of nowhere, it is amazing. The public areas are clean and tastefully decorated with couches and chairs. There is also a pool which was a lifesaver during the afternoons when the temperatures were in the mid 30's ( and it is now winter whilst we were here.) The staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We got to see my favourite wishlist which was the desert lion and elephants- truly amazing!! Also the animal life one might take for granted.....giraffe, snakes, birds and buck, especially Springbok. We were fortunate enough to witness a lion trying to take down a baby giraffe but unfortunately for him, the giraffe got away. Still, it was nature at its rawest. The lodge also has a section solely dedicated to hyena research. Which was very interesting. The only downside to the lodge is: 1. There is no AC in the rooms. At 35° during the day it is really uncomfortable at night. 2. The pool area could be a little bigger, with 8 rooms, it is a tiny area. We tried to go swim but there is just not enough space. Outside of that, it is an amazing experience.

Spent 3 nights here during June 2024. Our guide Max was absolutely awesome and fun to be with. Everything about the camp is superlative. However, the people working here are the best. The knew all guests by name and their preferences. There is nothing like the excursion to the skeleton coast. Overall, we did not feel like leaving!

My favourite camp on my Namibian trip, this is a truly special place. The combination of the landscapes and the animals struggling to survive in this environment is so unique. At the same time, the camp itself is wonderfully luxurious and the food superb. An extra special mention goes to the staff however, not only at Hoanib but at all Wilderness camps I visited on my holiday - they work ridiculously hard and always have smile on their faces. ||Wilderness Tours in fact needs to be more considerate of their working conditions - at all their camps, their local people are working 7 days a week with a very low allocation of time off - 2 weeks every 2 months, and yet it takes them a full 24 hours to travel home.. so really they only have 12 days off in that two months (that’s less than a weekend off every week). I understand that their workers’ livelihoods have been greatly improved by the existence of these camps, but many of the workers I met were clearly very fatigued.||Having said all that, I would still wholeheartedly recommend visiting Hoanib…

It's hard to describe the experience you'll receive at the Camp. The staff is outstanding and the rooms are well furnished with a beautiful desert vibe and offer incredible views. But do keep in mind this is a camp and not a hotel. The rooms don't have AC or heat not that it's needed often. The air is cool at night and warm during the day. They even place a heated water bottle in your bed at night for additional comfort and that special touch. But you're not going to the Camp for the accommodations, you're going for the experience and landscape. We had an incredible adventure in the Namibian desert. We slid down giant sand dunes, trekked out to coast, saw lions, giraffe and elephants among other animals and got within feet of them all bringing the animal experience up close and personal. The guides are experienced and so willing to share knowledge and their insights on the area. The Camp staff and chef are outstanding and always willing to make the most of your time. Getting to the Camp was an experience on it's own needing to travel via chartered plane - an hour from the main Namibian airport. The pilot of course was super friendly. If you're looking for a different experience beyond just Safari, give Namibia and chance and there is no better Camp experience than Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp.
