Tony and his wife, the owners, are wonderful people who are trying to make this hostel work. It's an old property, and no amount of patching and love can bring it up to modern standard. This is a low-budget place for low-budget travelers ... safe, clean, friendly, but not appealing or up-to-date. It is a 10-minute walk to downtown, 15 to the harbour. Fortunately, the nearest SkyBus stop is just a few of blocks away, well within reach while carrying your gear.||||The halls and common areas are covered in indoor-outdoor carpeting, the paint is peeling, the kitchen is small and dark. But the showers have plenty of hot water, the beds are clean, the linens fresh. Yes the towels are small, the bathrooms dark and poorly equipped, the staircase is steep and creaky, the common room table-tops are covered in plastic (like Saran-wrap, but industrial grade). But it is a friendly place.||||When we first arrived, we were dismayed at the decrepit building, and were convinced we'd made a mistake.||||But Tony and his wife went out of the way to make us feel at home -- so we feel conflicted -- it's hard to recommend this place, but at the same time, it provides safe and clean low-end accommodation, with lots of personal touches. So I guess it really depends on what you're looking for. We probably would not stay there again - but we also found it to be perfectly adequate as long as we kept our expectations in check.||||There was a school group on a holiday from Melbourne - and it was just right for those kids and their teachers and chaperones. And probably not bad for twenty-somethings looking for cheap lodging. Not so good for retirees traveling the world.||||And then there was a little issue with electrical - they had an electric heater plugged into a power strip -- something the Australian fire authorities were posting as a bad practice on posters in town.||||One other positive thing: right next door is an organic / cooperative grocery store with all kinds of high-quality food and some good produce. We particularly liked their granola and muesli.

We had a great stay. Got a room with a private bathroom. Everything was clean and service was helpful. Great value for money. A bit of road noise but that is expected with the downtown location. Had trouble getting the shower to warm up while we were doing laundry but it was fine in the morning. Would stay again.

Stayed 5 nights in a queen room private with ensuite. It was on the first floor tony the owner was more than helpful in every way possible. |Car was parked on street paid parking after 8am but if you pay attention to the signs you can score free parking. |Room had queen bed tables big windows and great shower and toilet. |Kitchen was always clean sofas and tables to watch tv or read a book. Coffee machine and free wifi. |A short stroll to the shops and waterfront. |Everything nice and clean extra towels were supplied upon asking, car parking was also worked out at no extra cost. |Tony and all staff were lovely and helpful and everyone staying there was very friendly. |Some rooms have shared amenities I have stayed in one of those rooms before and was very happy.

The staff is really nice, friendly, n helpful. Place is clean n quiet. Kitchen is accommodating. The only issue might be the light in the shower room, which is automatically turned on and off, so at night if you need to take some time in the toilet/shower room, the light might turn off when you're not even done. If you're afraid of the dark, it can be quite scary. But overall, I have no issue. Will recommend this place to my friend :)

Everyone was friendly and considerate. Room was ready for me and good value for the price. I shared a ladies dorm and each one of us respected the privacy (and need for sleep), of the others. The staff were helpful over the four days of the stay.

The location was excellent; just far out enough that you avoided all the traffic and noise but not too far out that you had to walk for miles or drive everywhere. The owner was friendly and accommodating, and was very approachable the couple of times we dealt with him. The room was small but that was to be expected from a hostel. The room didn't get any signal for the free WiFi, which was an inconvenience. The toilet seat was a little dicky and as such moved around while in use. The shower cut in and out making it difficult and unpleasant to use. The room wasn't cleaned very well; the sheets smelt like old lady perfume, there was used soap with other people's hair on it in the shower, there was dust and dirt under the bed, and the small heater smelt when on due to the dust caked on it. There was a lovely skylight which was the only source of natural light in the room but the blinds covering it didn't shut properly so let in the early morning light. There was no parking at the hostel so I had to pay for street parking, which got a bit expensive. For a private double bed room with tiny bathroom I was charged $64, which after experiencing the hostel is too expensive for the quality of the room. There was an option when booking to request a quiet room, however I didn't sleep much due to the people in the room next to us making noise throughout the night and early hours of the morning. Overall I wasn't very impressed with the hostel itself. There is much room for improvement.

I'll be honest, I was pretty skeptical of this place at first...but it was all misplaced. This place is great!! It's sooo much better than all it's competitors for a private room at this price. Tony (the host) is amazing. So helpful, polite, and welcoming. The room was clean and comfortable, the kitchen was well supplied, and the common space was lovely, clean, and well maintained. The whole place is quiet and comfortable. I would highly recommend this place.

We had booked a private room in this hostel for a week during our stay in Hobart, however after one night could not stay any longer. This was because the room was so so cold, with one tiny heater which did basically nothing to service it. My partner has asthma, and last time we stayed in a cold room he had to go to the hospital. Other small things such as the shower of the room would flood the entire bathroom, rendering the bathroom completely unusable for a good 2 hours later, also made our stay unsavoury. Given my partner’s health, we went and spoke to the staff of the hostel, airing our concerns and were promised a refund for the rest of our stay. We left happy with the customer service. The next day when the hostel manager called us to organise the refund we were met with such an incredible hostility that I can only describe it as a complete negligence for the customer service model. I was yelled at on the phone, called a liar, and my experience in his room was rendered completely invalid and I was made to feel like utter trash by the manager. Following being abused on the phone for simply requesting the refund I was promised, he said that his staff never promised a refund and it couldn’t be organised. This was a blatant lie and I am appalled by the lack of accountability, responsibility and honesty that the proprietor of this establishment runs his business with. I would NEVER recommend anyone stay in this hotel and continue to fund such a horrible and dishonest business practice.

Yelp
I chose this hostel based on Jump Tours' recommendation. I made a reservation online for the 6-bedroom dorm. The Tasredline shuttle dropped me at the entrance. Spent 1 night there. Cheap enough. It is a very run down building. The bed was ok. The clerk was a really nice guy. I glanced through the kitchen and it appears to have enough items to cook with. The shower bathrooms were clean. Wifi is available but I never used it. It is a 15-min walk to Salamanca Wharf. There are some pubs and restaurants in the area before reaching the wharf. Very quiet surroundings during the night. No lockers in the room. There is one table and 2 chairs in the room. Although I don't have much experience with hostels, this was my 2nd time staying at one. This hostel was less elegant than the previous hostel I stayed at.
