"A UNESCO World Heritage site, this hotel was the home of Hispaniola’s first governor, Nicolás de Ovando, and one of the first colonial structures built at the top of cobbled Calle Las Damas (the first paved street in the Americas). Built in 1502 and connected in 1974 during a reconstruction ordered by then President Joaquín Balaguer, the three stone buildings retain their original coffered ceilings, massive arches, tile floors, and brick and stone walls. In addition to 92 rooms and suites, including a dozen Imperial Club rooms overlooking the Ozama River and Don Diego Harbor (Room 4015 has a particularly stunning view and gorgeous bathroom), you’ll find a lovely reading nook, gourmet restaurant, lobby mojito bar, and tranquil garden, which features herbs and fruit trees used by the hotel kitchen."

Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) 1 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Hotel history in the Americas doesn’t get much deeper than this; Hodelpa Nicolás de Ovando occupies three stone houses dating back to the year 1502, on Santo Domingo’s Calle las Damas, the oldest paved road in the New World. As you might imagine, it’s been updated over the years, and today combines colonial-era atmosphere with contemporary luxury-hotel comforts — some rooms contain original stone walls or rehabilitated timber ceilings, and all feature tile floors and other stylistic nods to the building’s heritage." - Tablet Hotels

My parents and I have been coming to Hotel Nicolás de Ovando for 11 years, and we truly can’t stop coming back. Every visit feels just as special as the first. The atmosphere is unmatched—classy, historic, and full of charm—while the location is absolutely perfect in the heart of the Colonial Zone walkable distance to the best restaurants police guarding ever street it’s truly so safe and amazing . The staff make the experience unforgettable. Everyone is so friendly, attentive, and welcoming. The bartenders are especially kind and amiable, and I have to highlight the bar manager and Eric, who is not only incredibly attentive but also so funny and genuine—they always make us feel like family. The rooms are consistently amazing, blending modern comfort with timeless style. Every detail reflects the hotel’s class and elegance, and it always feels like a true escape. Recently, my aunt, uncle, and cousin joined us for their first visit, and they loved it just as much as we do. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic and the perfect start to every day. Hotel Nicolás de Ovando has become a tradition for us, and there’s simply no other place we’d rather stay. It’s more than just a hotel—it’s an experience we treasure year after year.

Overall, it’s a beautiful hotel and wonderful to experience a place so full of history. However, it seems they rely too much on that charm and overlook important details. We came to celebrate our anniversary and not even a simple congratulations was acknowledged. They placed us in a room right next to a party, so peace and quiet were impossible. To make matters worse, next morning breakfast was insufficient for the number of guests, and it appeared they were serving leftovers from the previous day’s event. Beautiful, yes, but disappointing service, with much left to be desired.

An oasis! We stayed at Nicolas de Ovando on the last night of our trip. We spent the first half at a large all inclusive in La Romana that had terrible service, and walking into Nicolas de Ovando was like a breath of fresh air! The staff was so kind, professional, and genuinely helpful. They helped switch my daughter’s roll out bed to a different room and were so adamant that I know it was no trouble at all. We lounged by the pool and had the best lunch we’ve had all week! The staff were all so knowledgeable about the hotel’s history, and gave us such cool tidbits as we engaged with them.|They helped coordinate an airport shuttle. From beginning to end our stay was absolutely marvelous! I truly wish we had spent our entire vacation here instead of only the last night!

Had an incredible experience, the hospitality was on another level. The receptionist was able to accommodate an early check-in for us. Felix went above and beyond! Friendly and kind, he walked us to our car late at night to ensure we were safe. One of the best hotel stays we ever had and we cannot wait to come back.

Hodepal Nicolas de Ovando is a 💎 gem. The service offered by the staff is superb and that’s what makes this hotel stand out from the rest. It’s like being home without all the home work. It’s very clean and the location is perfect. My thanks to Ana Magnolia Mendez, Juan DomingMendez Quesada, Luis Solis Taveraz, Hector Abreu, Edwin Feliz Gonzales, Francisco Ramirez, Yesenia and the rest of the staff for their outstanding service. I am very grateful and appreciative.||Rosario Egan

The environment in the hotel is wonderful. Great ambiance, very relaxing. Everything was clean and the staff is top of the line. The pool, bar and restaurant are great. Onsite parking is a plus. Incredibly useful since parking in the Zona Colonial is very hard.

Amazing. Hospitality, cleanliness and amenities were fantastic. As two female friends from the states, we were welcomed warmly, felt safe and enjoyed the beautiful architecture of the hotel. Would 100% recommend.
