Hōkan-ji Temple, better known as the Yasaka Pagoda, is one of those places in Kyoto that feels almost unreal — like you’ve stepped straight into an old painting. The five-story pagoda rises gracefully above the traditional wooden streets of Higashiyama, creating one of the most famous and photogenic scenes in all of Japan. Yet seeing it in person is far more magical than any picture. What makes this spot special isn’t just the pagoda itself, but the entire atmosphere around it. The narrow lanes, old machiya houses, and gentle slope of the street all frame the pagoda perfectly. Whether you visit in the quiet early morning light or during the golden glow at sunset, the scene feels timeless. If there’s one photo that always comes to mind when thinking of Japan, it’s the view of Yasaka Pagoda at sunset. It feels like this spot features in every tourism ad or guidebook, and now I understand why. The narrow sloping street leading up to the pagoda is lined with old wooden buildings and traditional lanterns, making it feel like a step back in time. I must have taken well over 100 photos, just trying to capture the perfect angle with the perfect light. As the sun started to set, the crowds really built up, everyone was trying to find their own version of that iconic shot. Be prepared to wait a bit, but it's worth every second. Fortunately the weather was on my side, and the sky lit up in shades of orange and pink just as I hoped, perfect. There were people in kimonos, photographers, couples, and lots of quiet appreciation for how peaceful and beautiful the moment was. You really do get swept up in it. This is one of those places that truly lives up to the photos, and maybe even surpasses them in person. Highly recommended at golden hour or just after.

I visited the temple in the late afternoon with cloudy weather. We rented traditional Japanese kimonos and walked about 1km. Along the way, we saw wooden houses, tea shops, and souvenir shops. The Ho kanji temple is a great spot for photo shoots.

This temple area is frequented by tourists, as it is the most familiar spot in old Kyoto. I would recommend that you go and take your beautiful pictures, and then spend some time in the temple. It really is wonderful.

This place is without a doubt one of my absolute favorites from my entire Japan trip. There is something truly special about this place ..so calm, spiritual, and peaceful. The small alleys streets especially stood out to me. They radiate so much peace that you naturally slow down and fully take in the moment. You can really feel the history and the quiet magic of the area. My biggest recommendation: go early in the morning. Before 8:00 a.m., when there are hardly any people around, the Pagoda feels incredibly serene and beautiful. After around 9–10 a.m., it becomes very crowded, and walking around doesn’t feel as enjoyable with so many people. It’s is absolutely worth visiting. A place that stays with you long after you leave, and one I would gladly return to. ⛩️✨

Paid a visit to this 5 story pagoda. It was huge upclose. I always saw it in photo but was really surprised of how huge it is when I'm in front of it. Many people and many photo spots options, so just walk around the Kiyomizu machi to find a nice photo spot for the pagoda.

Yasaka Pagoda is a quick visit between Kiyomizudera and Kodaiji. If you're already in the area, you might as well stop by for an iconic photo. Standing 5 stories high is this beautiful pagoda in the Gion district of Kyoto. I can't believe the first time I came here, I missed it by 600 ft coming up the opposite direction. So this time going back, it was on my to-do list to see it in person. The neighborhood around the pagoda is very quiet and a gorgeous scene on its own. You might come here just to view the Yasaka pagoda, but trust me, you will spend some time exploring the streets of Gion because there's so much to see and do nearby. If you want an empty shot, come very early. This is a very popular stop for many people and it'll be nearly impossible to get a clean shot if you come after 9am.

The Yasaka Pagoda is an iconic structure in Higashiyama, within easy walking distance of both Kiyomizu-dera and Gion. Built in 589, it's the only remaining structure of a temple called Hokan-ji. It doesn't have grounds to wander around like other temples in Kyoto, so unless I missed something, which is of course possible, there's no need to budget much time for a visit. You can't miss the five-story 46-meter pagoda if you're going anywhere with a view in this part of Kyoto, and it's easy enough to walk by it between the other major sightseeing destinations. I think we came across it both on purpose and on accident while exploring Kyoto on foot. It's a gorgeous pagoda, supposedly inspired by a dream, grand and historic even by the local standards. I almost found it more impressive as part of the broader landscape, that tower of antiquity presiding over a bustling modern city. It's worth seeing up close too, though, so make sure to walk up and check it out as you ramble through Kyoto.

Beautiful pagoda in the Gion district. This is worth the visit and especially during cherry blossom time. Lots of tourist in the area posing to take pictures in front of the Pagoda. Also note that you can rent Kimono and a photographer to take picture of you in front of the Pagoda. This is a tourists attraction area. Definitely worth the visit.

Hokanji temple is located in Higashoyama district in Kyoto, often time when Kyoto is introduced on TV, their five storied pagoda (Yasuka pagoda) is featured. After I was told this fact, I paid attention more on TV and yes it is correct. This Yasuda Pagoda is seen on TV when Kyoto in general is introduced. Supposedly they are open during the day to go inside. Hours are limited and the best to check prior to your visit. I came here at night as tower gets light up.
