The Holbrooke Hotel (Grass Valley, California) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The California Gold Rush town of Grass Valley, in the Sierra foothills, is something of a waystation for travelers between San Francisco and the mountains. But the Holbrooke Hotel makes a compelling case as a destination unto itself. It’s the region’s longest-operating hotel, but it’s not stuck in the past — the rooms, both in the original hotel and the adjoining carriage house, are full of historical personality but also filled with modern comforts. The Golden Gate Saloon is not just a bar but a restaurant as well, and it’s joined by the Iron Door, a speakeasy-style cellar lounge." - Tablet Hotels

This Gold Rush-era Boutique Hotel Is California’s Oldest Stay - Hotels Above Par - Boutique Hotels & Travel

"Established in 1862 and designated a California State Landmark, this authentically renovated boutique hotel blends modern comforts with rustic, Gold Rush–era charm. Wild West and Victorian motifs—stag-head decor, cowhide rugs, copper accents and vintage black-and-white photographs—sit alongside original artifacts like an iron cash register and an 1898 guestbook, while contemporary touches such as gold-accented fixtures, exposed brick, white-painted walls and leather-tufted bed platforms update the rooms. The property offers 17 main-house guestrooms (with front-facing rooms that receive ample natural light and private balconies) as well as an adjacent carriage-stable annex, and provides typical boutique amenities including an on-site restaurant and bar, free parking and free Wi-Fi."

Absolutely enjoyable stay, but I will nitpick to give others a good idea.||||Good: Visual aspect and restaurant||The lobby area looked upscale and had a LOT of character. The restaurant/bar inside, called Golden Gate Saloon, which is visible from the entrance, has been in operation since 1852, was a big part of the vibe for me. Upscale decor, which appeared to be Gold Rush/Frontier inspired, modernized the Victorian construction. Ceiling fans that run on a pulley system, and a cage-like Victorian elevator updated with transparent glass walls, all contributed to the character of the lobby and restaurant.||The food was delicious; not too different from the price range of an upscale restaurant. Absolutely loved the Brussels sprouts (a starter), chilaquiles, and steak entrees.||||Good: Service||Concierges and servers were completely friendly and eager to converse when initiated. No complaints there. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, drinking water and many other necessities were available upon request, which was wonderful.||||Good: Location||Our main reason for booking Holbrooke was its location 30 minutes drive from our favorite swimming hole on the breathtaking, clear waters of the Yuba River. Downtown Grass Valley was an absolute pleasure as well, the Holbrooke being situated on a sloping main street with a lively appearance. Highlights include decent espresso drinks at a cookie shop a short walk down the street. A walking-only alley off the main street is populated with more businesses, including an ice cream/candy shop, and a "metaphysical supply store" where we got a fun and accurate Tarot/Astrology reading. Everything absolutely walk-able including the Safeway supermarket.||||OK: Our room experience, in the Purcell House||Rather than staying in a room in Holbrooke's main building, I'd unknowingly booked a room in the detached building behind the main hotel, called the Purcell house, which appears to be a former home with Victorian construction, converted into hotel rooms. ||||Our room was clean, with nice colonial and Victorian inspired furniture and frontier/Gold Rush design. The bathroom sink and shower had Victorian fixtures, which was a huge plus aesthetically. However, the walls and sheets of the bedroom were all mostly white, and had a plain vibe, different from the room photos I'd seen online which had a little more color in the decor.||||Room temperature is set for the whole floor/story, rather than having a thermostat in every room. The floor did not seem to be uniformly level; it had the warped feel of historical construction. ||||My least favorite aspect was the poor sound isolation afforded by the old building construction: quiet hours are enforced because guests can hear each other between rooms, though we didn't hear much other than the occasional shower and floor creaking, muffled by wall to wall carpet from other guests' footsteps in an adjacent room. Not too bad, but worth mentioning.||||Overall I love this place and look forward to booking at the Holbrooke Hotel again, but want to see a room in the main building, rather than the Purcell house.

A step back in time to the 1800's I believe the hotel was originally open in 1851. The folks have brought it into the present but kept it's 1800 charm. It wasn't so much remodeled , but rather updated. Each of the rooms are different in size and decor. Our room 17 was a bit small but we didn't feel cramped. It had been updated but again it was allowed to keep its charm. Bedding was comfortable, towels fluffy and amenities nice. The tub/shower was claw foot and it required a step stool to get in. I am uncertain about other rooms but there was no T.V. (ok with me) The room has an honor bar, refrigerator, safe. While there was no coffee machine there was a kettle and tea and instant coffee available. The staff was just great with a special shout out to Kim at the front desk who had lots of information about Grass Valley and the hotel. It was fun to chat with her. How much did I enjoy our stay? We are coming back!

Google
Absolute favorite hotel and restaurant hands down! My husband planned an amazing surprise proposal with the help of the staff! We have always dined and stayed there, and recently had our post I do wedding party at their speak easy. Anthony was a joy to work with, and always had excellent communication! They made our evening so special. Our guests raved over the drinks and food!! Then this week we needed to pull off a last minute very special surprise. Once again Anthony was on it and he and his team made it such a wonderful day to remember! Whether you are going there for a meal or planning an event, you will not be disappointed

It was our first time in Grass Valley, and the Holbrooke lived up to every expectation! The rooms were clean, tastefully decorated, and full of period charm — plus they were refreshed daily. The dining room and bar were beautiful and lively on Friday night, complete with live music! Kim and the entire staff were incredibly helpful and gave us great local recommendations. Augustina and Caitlin were also incredible hosts and truly elevated our dining experience with their warmth and attention to detail. The parking lot is conveniently located just behind the building, which made it easy to come and go during our river day trips. The food was delicious, and the cocktails were perfectly balanced. All in all, a 10/10 stay!

We came here for my wife’s birthday! We unfortunately did not get to meet any Victorian or early American ghosts. Dang. But regardless we had an amazing time! The place has such a modern yet historical charm. Everything from claw foot tubs to old elevators. And the restaurant and bar are incredible. Get the Brussels sprouts, what the chef does to them I don’t know but they were life changing.

This hotel is elegant. The rooms are well appointed, the staff is excellent, the food amazing. The bar is a lovely stop for an excellent old fashioned. The staff welcome you like a charished friend. The location on Main Street is a delight. This place, this town is charming. The beds are so soft!

Spent two enjoyable evenings at the historic Holbrooke Hotel. The hotel traces its history back to 1852 and I believe it was recently refurbished by the current owners in 2021. They did an outstanding job capturing the era while creating a contemporary hotel to visit and enjoy.||Each evening we enjoyed cocktails at the Golden Gate Saloon which transports you back to the 1800's. Cait was tending bar both evenings and makes great drinks, especially the chocolate martini. Each morning coffee was available on the main floor at 7:00 a.m. and small scones were also available to get the morning started.||Parking was a bit limited in the lot behind the hotel in the evening, as some visitors were there just for dinner. We found parking spots in the morning and afternoon pretty easy to come by. If the lot is full we found street parking close by or there is a larger lot on the corner of Main Street and South Auburn.||We stayed in room #5 with the window facing a one-way street which had a bit of traffic. When we stay next time we may ask for a room facing towards the rear or outdoor courtyard in the back.||If you have the time don't pass up the pasties at Marshall's. It's a short walk down the Mill Street Promenade. We've also heard a great time to visit is during the Cornish Christmas celebrations which is each Friday evening in December.||Definitely plan to come back and also try the sister property in Nevada City called the National Exchange Hotel.

Google
This hotel is charming and has potential to be much better, but is limited by parking issues (no guarantee you can park on property as it’s open to the public and the public really uses it). The building has terribly thin walls (you will hear music from the streets, music and noise from the bar, and the other guests in their rooms - yeah that too 😩). They serve coffee and scones (the size of meatballs) at 7 which they say is included….the coffee is okay and there is half and half - a few bags of green tea, but no nut milks out. The staff is helpful and nice and the restaurant has good food! I would eat there again but, I don’t think I’ll stay in the hotel again. Their sister property, The National Exchange has a way better vibe, a wonderful terrace overlooking the street below….it’s in Nevada City and is on another level…w/ a luxurious lounge (lots of teas and nut milks and grownup sized muffins) with a terrace to enjoy your drinks or coffee overlooking the street (instead of sitting off the overcrowded parking lot in the back). I’ll definitely go back there again and again :)

Yelp
Had a really nice meal at the Holbrook Hotel Restaurant. The Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly -- crispy on the outside, tender inside, and full of flavor. I also tried a quesadilla, and it was so tasty and satisfying. The atmosphere is charming with that cozy historic feel, and the staff was kind and attentive without hovering. It's a great spot to relax, have a good meal, and enjoy the small-town charm. I'll definitely be coming back to try more of the menu.

Yelp
I don't know if the food is great or not That's because the hostess was mia at the check in station, she saw our party walk in and continue her conversation with the one waitress on duty She eventually sat us only to have the server give us a very inhospitable attitude. And tell us the tasting menu had to be ordered by the whole table to be served. Do better on a not packed Sunday, please

Yelp
This beautiful, historical hotel was a delight to stay in. The clawfoot tub to soak in, balcony overlooking Main St, the attentive pleasant staff, historic bar, restaurant, and the most comfortable bed ever. I would stay here again. Loved it. No TV was a great option as it lent to the historical charm.

Yelp
Sept-9-2025. Absolutely terrible service! Understand it was getting close to the 4PM shift change, but we were totally ignored by the bartender and food service staff member. We are locals for 45 yrs and never had this happen. Good luck when the recession hits and all you have is locals to depend on. It sure won't be us!

Judy S.

Yelp
We stopped at the Holbrooke after a concert for drinks and appetizers. If you haven't tried the food recently - you should. The calamari, truffle fries and tofu salad were delicious with interesting flavors. Our server was delightful so too bad others have let people down. We had a great experience.

Yelp
I would like to start with the parking. Almost impossible. The lot was full upon arrival (I'm assuming due to the holiday). Parking is shared with the hotel, bar and restaurant. We had to wait quite a bit to park. From the parking we "Guessed" we should walk through the back door through the dining area to the tiny front desk. We were given our key and then went back through the dining room and parking lot to the carriage house. The room was sparsely decorated and cold upon arrival. The bed was super comfy. The sink in the room was a bit strange but the clawfoot tub was cute. Unfortunately when I went to take a shower the next day the tub felt like I was going to fall through (I weigh 100 lbs) Now back to the arrival. We called the front desk to find out how to turn up the heat and had to leave a message. Sometime during the late evening the room heated up (Not sure how this happened we didn't have a thermostat and never heard back from the front desk). It was a bit challenging changing clothes in the cold. The walls are extremely thin. The hotel does offer to give you earplugs and if your light sleeper, I suggest you take them up on this offer or bring your own. The walls are very, very, very thin. You can hear guests conversations throughout the hallway and all the way out the door. Noise from the street is also pretty prevalent. I had read the reviews and anticipated this so I brought headphones that were noise canceling to help me fall asleep and drown out the noise in the hallway. Now to The dinner: We arrived 15 minutes early and were told we could have a seat in the bar to wait for our reservation. We ordered a drink from the bartender (and that's a whole Nother story) and received a very tasty drink. However, the bar top was sticky and dirty. I couldn't touch the bar top without getting syrupy hands. I watched the bartender several times use a cleaning rag to wipe off glasses she was serving drinks in (she had overfilled almost every drink). Luckily about this time we were seated for dinner (I did not finish my drink). To my dismay, we seated in the bar area at a table that was empty when we arrived, (It was directly behind were we were sitting at the bar) and I'm not sure why we had to wait to be seated due to the fact that there was a reserved sign on the table. The bar was loud, noisy and the overcrowded (SRO by this time). I did not enjoy having to sit in the bar for my holiday dinner. Had I known we would be seated in the bar I wouldn't have made the reservation. Perhaps in the future this can be noted ahead of time so request can be made for the dining room or canceled. Our dinner consisted of a four course meal. We started with the super green salad, which was delicious. It was dressed with a creamy green goddess dressing salad consisted of sliced beets, greens and croutons. Perfect. Next onto the risotto also delicious however, I was full from the bread and the salad before dinner so I couldn't finish the whole meal. Lastly, we had the chocolate torte. It was topped with a black berry sauce. It was perfect size and delicious. I only had a few bites because I was full. I have absolutely no complaints about the food or service. It was simply amazing. The hotel is located right in the middle of town. You can walk everywhere (which I suggest you do because parking is horrible). If you can find parking at the hotel, keep your car there and walk. Take advantage of the local coffee shops and eateries. We did and were not disappointed.

Yelp
My Husband brought me here for my Birthday and I am so happy we celebrated here! The front desk, (who I didn't catch their name) was excellent. They helped with everything we needed such as bringing us robes and extra body wash. The fact there is no TV in the room made our experience all the more quality, I loved the escapism feeling of it all. The fact they kept the Victorian charm of this place but also adding the luxurious feeling to every surrounding it definitely shows how much thought was put into this place. I am so excited to stay at their sister hotel The National Exchange next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Came in this afternoon to enjoy a cocktail and wind down after a busy day. Visited May 7th..see receipt. This is a beautiful remodeled hotel with nice indoor and outdoor dining (dogs ok in outdoor dining area). It is located in the heart of downtown Grass Valley with plenty of shops and restaurants to walk to. It has a long history in Grass Valley and they used to do ghost tours around the holidays (not sure if they still do it). The bar is beautiful and the lobby and indoor dining is very inviting. It's classy but still casual. I had a glass of wine and my friend had an old fashioned. See the video..they make it special! The drinks are a bit pricey but the ambience makes up for it. They also serve lunch and dinner with an eclectic menu. They used to have a smoker which made the best chicken wings..and would smell so good on the outside dining patio (bring it back!). Its a great place to hang out with friends! Check out the elevator..its a classic! Parking available behind the restaurant. Great place to bring friends or family!

Yelp
Such a beautiful place to visit. We had a drink at the bar and traveled back into history with the ambiance here. They also send free post cards if you have a drink here and we thought that was pretty awesome. Take a gander into this old school hotel if you're in the area.

Yelp
This hotel is so incredibly beautiful. It is located in Grass Valley on Main Street. My husband and I came here the other night with a few family members for the Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner cost $80 per guest and included appetizers, salad, soup, main course and dessert. The hotel is so classy and gorgeous. The tables were beautifully decorated and the main room had a warm crackling fire place. In the bottom floor, they had a separate room full of Christmas decorations, trees and nutcrackers. The food was super delicious. I recommend the garden green salad full of mixed greens, avocado, beets and light dressing. The parsnip soup too was also very good and the main course (I got the risotto) was amazingly delicious as well. Nicest service as well. I heard you can stay here in the hotel. I have never stayed here overnight but, I heard that the rooms were spacious and comfy. Definitely want to come back for dinner again soon. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We ate in the dining room last Friday night. The hostess and server were very friendly and provided good service. They were quite busy and we did not have reservations but they worked us in. My friend is gluten intolerant but they said they had several items that would work for her. She ordered elk and I had oysters Rockefeller and the green goddess salad, both were tasty. The oysters filled me up so I only had a bite of salad and brought the rest home for my husband. Which he ate right away. By Saturday afternoon, my husband was throwing up from food poisoning and my friend was sick from her celiac disease. Both recovered in a few days. So there's something amiss in their kitchen.

Yelp
Came in for some drinks at the bar and it was super cute! The espresso martinis were a 10/10 and highly recommend them.

Yelp
Stayed here for our anniversary. The rooms were gorgeous, and no TV because it is old, and yes the floors are not completely soundproof, this is not Vegas. It's historic, the decor of the whole hotel is beautiful, learned that 4 US presidents have stayed here. That said it was clean; as updated as possible while keeping the charm of original hardware, and the staff were accommodating. LOVED the historic bar downstairs, cocktails are pricey ($15-$18) but it's in a small town and it is a beautiful space. The restaurant was great too. Had their house made gnocchi and short rib. Don't sleep on the appetizers, the burrata with herb rubbed bread was SO GOOD.

Yelp
This is a very unique and beautiful OLD brick hotel in downtown Grass Valley!! First class all the way!Amazing locally sourced food with a very talented CHEF! We will embark! OH, and their Onion Soup was FANTASTIC!!l

Yelp
Gorgeous historic hotel in historic Grass Valley. Parking lot in back in an area with limited parking. Complimentary coffee, house made scones, and warm breakfast (frittata.) Fiona, was soooo helpful in the am providing me with a throw blanket so we could sit on the patio with our coffee and stay warm. She also graciously responded to my request for stevia quickly and without hesitation. Thank you Fiona (I hope i spelled that correctly!) the hotel is charming and well appointed and has a restaurant and basement bar on site. The bed was really comfortable and the toiletries smelled great. A nice selection in the honor bar in the room if you are looking for a convenient beverage. I would definitely stay here again, great accommodations and staff was delightful. Made us feel really special!

Yelp
We ate at the restaurant the same evening local musicians met at the bar to play Irish music! It was so fun! (Apparently they do that every Monday night:) The food was fantastic. I loved the salmon and potato dish. Cocktails were also delicious:)

Yelp
The Holbrooke hotel is such a fun treat to visit-- the decor makes me think of a classy supervillains house(in a good way) and the ambiance is perfect for a November breakfast. I had the oyster mushroom omelette and the flavors were amazing-- sweet barbeque sauce with the buttery mushrooms and cheese went perfectly with the fluffy egg. I also asked for the hot chocolate to be mixed with 1/2 drip coffee and it came with a dollop of the most decadent whipped cream I've ever seen. Excellent coffee and hot chocolate, and the service is great. I can't wait to come back again.

Liz K.

Yelp
Amazing staff and a great location, shout out to Kim! A must visit while in Grass Valley!

Yelp
Start to finish this hotel gives you the feeling of being in SF. Great staff and food was unreal. Chef Robb and his team made the most delicious and beautiful food. If you've never been make the 40 minute drive from Lincoln

Yelp
My wife and I live in grass valley, and frequently bring visiting guests to the Holbrooke hotel. After our last visit to the restaurant, I won't do that again. My parents were visiting and wanted to go to dinner, and we recommended the Holbrooke. We had the worst service. My stepfather said to me when we got on the street, "I would not come back here. It was the worst service I've ever had, for the price of a meal". I couldn't disagree with him. The waitress was a Caribbean woman, who had seemingly no interest in being personable, left out drinks empty, and all told the dinner started at 5, and we didn't leave until 720. The pacing was absurd and the restaurant wasn't even busy. I couldn't explain it, and was embarrassed having talked the place up to them.

Sonia P.

Yelp
Had a 7:45pm reservation, confirmed. This was our Anniversary dinner, which we traveled 4 hours for. Not only did they tell us we were too early at 7:32, but eventually sat us down, for another 30 minutes without even offering us water. Extremely disappointed. Every server walked passed us numerous times and only tended to those who had already eaten. We didn't get asked a single question after we sat. We had to walk out, at 8:20, to go eat across the street. We wereee prepared to have dinner and numerous cocktails to celebrate our special occasion, unfortunately they didn't give us the opportunity to spend a single dollar. Just wow.

Paulette G.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in for a cocktail after a performance at the Center the Arts. What a wonderful atmosphere, warm and cozy with a good size bar. There's also bar downstairs with music that I discovered on my way to the ladies room. Everyone was very friendly. We shared a delicious strawberry crumble with lemon curd, whipped cream and basil! I shouldn't have shared, haha. I would definitely recommend this spot for a drink and dessert! Next time we'll have to try their food.

Yelp
On September 18 2022, my wife and I had our wedding reception at the Holbrooke Hotel, and it was AMAZING. We gave the kitchen staff quite a challenge: a 100% vegan menu. They pulled it off with GUSTO! It was one of the greatest days of my life, and I drank a lot, so my review may be a bit scattered. We got a balcony room for the night of the party, and sprung for the romantic getaway package, which included a delicious bottle of French champagne, local chocolate truffles, and a beautiful flower bouquet. It was extra, but sparked a lot of joy, so it was worth it. The view from the balcony was beautiful, especially in the rain. Joakim (I hope I spelled his name right) was our point-person on staff, and he was absolutely ON IT! From beginning to end, he was kind, curteous, and professional, even toward the end when I was pretty drunk. He nailed it. The food was SO GOOD. Many of our guests said it was the best wedding food they have ever eaten. Props to the kitchen staff. The roasted peach salad was amazing, as was the mole and lion's maine barbacoa. After dinner, we went down to the Iron Door for cocktails and music. The food down there was so good as well, especially the crostini. The bartender down there was amazing. I forgot her name but she was really nice and poured delicious strong drinks. My wife and I certainly got what we paid for, and look forward to patronizing the Holbrooke again and again in the future.

Yelp
One star would be unfair but I just can't give this place any better than this. This is a review based on a stay at the hotel. Pros: - Proximity to main part of town. Cons: Pretty much everything else. Yes, even when you give the place a break and accept that there are some quirks associated with an old building that has been restored this place is just not enjoyable. For the price that this place charges, everything should be better. Here's a short list of some of the things that this place doesn't do well - customer service. At every turn we or others in our party enjoyed the pleasure of being served by some of those pretentious people that know nothing of customer service - every single floorboard in the entire place squeaks. Gotta pee in the middle of the night? Well your spouse is getting woken up. - no sense of urgency to complete anything. Each time I called the front desk no one answered. The employees all over the place were constantly on their phones. - You hear everything. The windows don't seal so you hear every car that drives by. Oh and when there are 3 leaf blowers blowing at 7am on a Friday you'll get the classic "we're not in charge of that" line.

Larry R.

Yelp
Spent 2 nights here on a 7 day anniversary trip. Booked suite 18 and have no regrets. This Hotel is so relaxing. We had a huge private patio overlooking the quaint street. Sat there for hours people watching. The room and bath was oversize with a sitting area. We did not eat there but the bar was good and the staff was very attentive. Keep in mind, this place is not high-tech. Not intending to be either. I highly recommend one of the three front suites with balconies. Your money will be well spent.

Kathleen

Yelp
I love the old times beauty of this hotel and always take out of town visitors there for a drink. Having never eaten there, I decided to take my spouse for a birthday dinner. We ordered "draft" cocktails (meaning the are batch mixed in advance) for $15 each. Moderately balanced flavors. We ordered at burrata and grilled peach and focaccia starter. Burrata was nicely seasoned. Grilled peach had grill marks on outside and was cold. Focaccia did t look like any focaccia I'd ever seen. Not like sliced sandwich bread soaked in oil and either almost toasted or just dried out. Entrees were rib eye steak and I ordered scallops. Rib Eye steak was good and a generous portion. The smashed potato was a red potato boiled and smashed with a fork. No flavor. Asparagus was overcooked, limp and oily. I received a plate of mashed potatoes sitting in butter/oil (?) with 4 scallops for $45! 4 scallops and a plate of mashed potatoes. Yum. Not. We skipped the dessert menu. Two drinks, one starter and two entrees for $175 including tip (server was good). I deem this place waste of time and money if you want edible food. Worst birthday dinner ever. I give it 2 stars as the building is beautiful and it's historical location is worth seeing. That's it.

Sharon A.

Yelp
Had a Wonderful time - walked across the street for Italian food that night, had drinks in the evening at their beautiful old bar. The rooms are very clean and the big surprise was on Sunday morning there was live music playing. Apparently that happens every week! Walked

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here and all we can is is WOW. This hotel is beautiful our room was gorgeous hard to believe it was built in the 1800s. The hotels is walking distance to shopping, restaurants and bars in the area. Inside the hotel there' are 2 bars. One is located at the entrance and the other one is located downstairs. Our bartender upstairs was amazing, she gave us great customer service. She was very helpful with the drink options they have on their drink menu. We didn't get the same customer service downstairs as the guy kept forgetting my drinks for some reason but it's ok. The place was a little busy so it's understandable. We will totally be coming back we highly recommend this place.

Katie S.

Yelp
I love the Holbrooke. The upstairs bar is great. HOWEVER if you are booking for the Iron Door Miracle bar during the holiday season, reservations are limited and they offer spots up to 10:45pm. Last call is at 10:45pm and they close at 11pm. So we had enough time to order one drink and get out. They need to stop reservation times before then...

Bryce A.

Yelp
There's a soft-spot in my heart for historic buildings and hotels, and the Holbrooke satisfies it. Not only do you get to feel the weight of history, you also have the amenities and comforts of current day complete with a very attentive, helpful and friendly staff. This is NOT your cookie-cutter kind of place, and if you are expecting something 'typical' then I invite you to go to some lousy chain place instead. THIS is for true travelers; it is what a hotel should be. Open sharable spaces with an excellent bar and restaurant. Quaint, clean well-appointed comfortable rooms meant for resting while just small enough to encourage you to go to go out and explore. Grass Valley has a lot going for it; there are plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and entertainment to make a downtown stay over a night or two or three an enjoyable visit without needing to drive anywhere. You can also, however, jump in your car and go visit the Empire Mine, or jump into the creek, or go on a hike. With Nevada City a mere 4 or 5 miles away, you can also go see their nice historic downtown as well. My wife and I were very pleased and impressed with the Sunday brunch we enjoyed (at the hotel's restaurant) after having stayed overnight in the carriage house portion of the hotel, and we enjoyed a cocktail Saturday evening at the Golden Gate Saloon. Simple, good comfort and plenty to do without even getting into your car. We will certainly return here for another visit sometime. Oh, again, we found the staff to be very helpful and attentive and friendly.

Yelp
This hotel is pretty darn amazing! My other half and I stayed there for two nights during the beautiful holiday season. The room was beautiful and comfortable, the hotel was stunning, and the town is uniquely amazing. The only drawbacks are that the front desk is not adequately staffed, but when it is, the attendants are amazing and so knowledgeable and kind. Shout out to Danny one of the nicest people we have ever met. And the parking situation at the hotel is subpar. Street parking is hard if not impossible to come by at night, and the parking lot is not only for a hotel guest but restaurant and bar guests so it fills up easily and can take quite some time to get a parking spot when coming back in the evening from being out. The fact that the amenities fee covers parking is somewhat of a joke. The general manager did make the situation right to the best of her abilities but if you care about having to sit in your car, waiting to park after a long day for quite some time, then you might want to stay somewhere else locally.

Yelp
Beautifully appointed and restored historic hotel. Located right in downtown Grass Valley. Friendly staff. Clean and comfortable queen room. Cons: The reason for a 4 star and not 5, was the noise from the Saloon. Our stay was Thursday and Saloon had a live band that played until 9:00 pm, and the bar was noisy until 10:00 pm. This was not disclosed, if it was I would have asked for a room in the back side of the hotel. Our bathroom was beautiful but the only shower was using a claw foot tub with a shower curtain, awkward! We didn't use it. No extra bedding such as blankets and pillows. Hot breakfast was frittata and some small scones. It would have been nice to have some fresh fruit. The coffee was excellent. We were charged an amenity fee of just ove $20 for our one night stay. It was explained the cost covers the two plastic bottles of water and the breakfast. I would definitely recommend this beautifully restored historic hotel.

Yelp
This review is the restaurant only. We had a pre paid Prix Fixe valentines dinner through RESY a restaurant reservation service and the only reservation was at 4:15 pm. We were immediately seated downstairs (Iron Door Saloon) and our waitress showed up to take drink orders. They had a special on some local wine that they normally sold by the bottle. It was "turned" and we sent it back and selected another variety. The menu was great. We had Lobster Ravioli, Squash Soup, Wagyu Beef (tasty, not as tender as I expected and slightly cool) and a Strawberry Crumble for dessert. Maybe the meal wasn't temperature hot enough because our location was so far from the kitchen. It wasn't cold, kinda luke warm. Service was excellent, well timed and friendly. Then the check came and they didn't credit the whole amount prepaid. Fortunately we were able to show the paid charge on the credit card bank website. This delayed payment, involved the manager and was a real "downer" for a Valentines meal. So, I'm giving a 2 due to bad wine, cool temperature food, and failure to properly process our prepayment. It was eventually all straightened out and our prepayment accepted.

Yelp
A beautiful and somewhat famous hotel. The ambience is great. The room was perfect for my stay. Very sheek style. The restaurant food was delicious (I had the wings) And the downstairs venue "The Iron Door" was awesome. The comedy show was outstanding! They had great local and LA talent that headlined and were amazingly funny.

Yelp
Cute, quaint, and perfectly located for eating and shopping without driving, and a short drive to everything. The restaurant had recently been reopened, I think, as the online menu was primarily Mexican food, but the current menu was "American." The soaking tub was great, but I was in a building separate from the main building and the parking lot noise was a little loud on the weekend. The morning scones, however, were well worth crossing the parking lot for!

Yelp
Lacks customer service & flexibility. This goes back to poor management. There are many other options in the area. Choose carefully.

Yelp
Exquisitely restored Gold Rush Hotel. we sat in front of the fire by the gorgoous bar and had appetizers and drinks. The food was perfect and the drinks were excellent. Kudos the owners here. I am not crazy about the dried citrus in drinks trend but it's a minor and personal point.

Yelp
We went to this hotel and were so surprised at the beautiful decorations inside!! Our room was on the second floor and it was gorgeous, we had a patio, we did have to share it , but it was blocked off by a plant. we had 2 rocking chairs and a table. No tv's in the room. there is a safe and a tiny fridge filled with drinks that you have to pay for . that's all. no iron, there is a clothing rack to hang clothes, no closet. the room creaks and moans throughout the night but the building is old. We made it fun and said it was the ghosts. . we brought door alarms as there is a cheap lock on the door. the room is on Main Street and easy to walk to the shops . we ate dinner downstairs, my drink had black floaties each time. ( eww - we watch bar rescue- ) big turn off but they remade them each time. the food was good. we ate at happy hour so the prices were cheaper because it's expensive. my only complaint is this: the room was super dusty.. everywhere. my daughter is allergic to dust. we went to the restaurant and the baseboards and everywhere you touched was dusty. i felt like that was a huge problem- my daughter is a RN and knows how to control the problem but sometimes too much dust and we are in the er. please Holbrook Hotel just dust the hotel even the vent in the bathroom and on top of the doors and the top of the bed frames . your place is beautiful!!! the service was amazing ( Nathan was so helpful ). The hotel and decorations are so beautiful!!

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. Oldest hotel in California still operating. Lot of ghosts! This was my first job at 16 years old, though i've moved from the area I love coming back and staying here.

Yelp
Restaurant only: Great service, good food, and warm, cozy environment. Everyone including the hostess, wait staff, and bartenders were amazing. Extra kudos to the bar staff and Sara for amazing cocktails.

Yelp
Amazing is an understatement. Hotel drinking is a beautiful art in and of itself but Holbrooke takes us to another level. Ok. So the drinks are a little pricy but what isn't these days? Anyways, the measure of hospitality should be a unit called the Miguel. As far as bartenders go, this is the upper echelon of service. Not only did he pour a solid couple off beers with a most polite smile, but when we came to our car with a dead/dying battery he gave us a jump to get back on the road. Like a concierge, this man made our life's better without batting an eyelash. He alone is a reason to visit. On top of that, the decor is a pleasant eye pleaser and the building reeks of history that induces goosebumps. Didn't try the food but it smells fantastic. The cocktails that Miguel mixes up are divine. Beer selection is also a winner.

Yelp
Classy hotel, good food and much to our delight a genius of a mixologist/bartender by the name of William in the underground "Iron Door" bar is crafting superb cocktails in a romantic atmosphere not to be missed. Will definitely be back for this level of experience!

Yelp
There were good things (Angelina the bartender) and bad things (the guy running food service) that we experienced today. We got there at 11:02am and were told they were still serving breakfast and we quickly put our orders in and 10 mins later we were told they had stopped the breakfast service. Ugh...why bait and switch us? The lunch menu was not interesting as I had my heart set on breakfast...it is too bad they could not have made an exception for us. The food was just fair and they had no whipped cream for the Irish Coffee...

Yelp
We've stayed at the Holbrooke and it's sister hotel The National several times. They are both absolutely beautiful! Both nestled in cute downtown locations near shopping & dining. The rooms are CLEAN & very cozy. The front desk and housekeeping staff are doing an amazing job. If you have an issue with your stay reach out to management. They care and will make it right. We stayed, unknowingly, at the same time as a wedding and the noise was pretty extreme. However, the owner went over and above to hear our concerns and she kept us as returning guests. You quickly realize she's behind the magic of these amazing hotels. If they can improve anywhere it would be with food service. The servers & bartenders (at both hotels) seem "moody." Maybe their ages? They should consider a smile gets you a bigger tip. Nonetheless, we look past it. I warn you, The Holbrooke will keep calling you back again & again for more stays

Yelp
Beautiful yes, would I come back here, no. The girls at the checkin desk were so nice and sweet, rest of the staff no. I booked there because of I thought we were staying in the hotel, only to find out we were put out back across the parking lot in a converted house, that was so cold you could have kept your beer there, without a fridge. Hidden fees, comp meal coupons that were ignored by our server so we ended up paying full price. We had to make reservations for dinner, only to watch a host seat a couple that had no reservations. No fridge, microwave, coffee pot or TV in the room. I don't care about the TV but he did, and I wake up at 3:30 in the morning, and in a little mountain town, you're not going to find coffee at that time of morning. This is why I bring my own coffee pot!!! Fridge, any snacks we had went bad because you ask for ice and they give you like two cups. For what it cost to stay there, I was very disappointed, I wanted the weekend to be special and perfect for my man's birthday and was a little embarrassed how disappointing it was. We always have food left over where ever we eat so it's nice to have a microwave to reheat things for a midnight snack. No can do, and we were told it is because the chef doesn't believe in microwaves. Lol, well he believes in freezer burnt garlic butter that is so frozen solid it wouldn't melt on the beautiful steak we ordered. $13 for a glass of house pinot grigio. I don't mind paying for quality, but this was far from it. The "complete breakfast was awful, a fritata that was terrible, had no flavor, no condiments or even salt and pepper. No, juice, or fruit, only terrible coffee, (So glad I bring my own coffee pot), and the "donuts" were these odd interesting flavored scones. This cheffy, really needs to up his game or change his title to just being a "cook" no where near a chef title. Only thing I got any pleasure at was the hot shower that unfroze me from my room. Will I go back or recommend this place, unfortunately not. Such a beautiful hotel in a gorgeous little town in the mountains, with so much potential. So if you're going to stay here, I recommend bringing your own coffee pot, mini fridge or a better ice chest, mini microwave, tv for your guy, and a space heater so you don't freeze to death. Better yet, stay somewhere else and just visit it to look around.

Yelp
If you are looking for a cocktail in the beautiful town of Grass Valley, CA., do not look here. Unless of course you are used to forking over $28 for a double Gray Goose Vodka and you are willing to wait for perhaps forty-five minutes for the privilege of paying the cost of a bottle of Gray Goose Vodka for a drink. Stay away, there are better places in Grass Valley that do not believe in grossly overcharging for their cocktails. And expect their customers to nap while waiting.--
