Google
What a perfect spot for ice cream, really good and unique. I got the s'mores and my husband got the brownie something.. but it was so good, we are from Oregon and my husband was so excited to have a really good ice cream, and it didn't disappoint, it hit the spot for sure. They only accept cash, so bring cash with you, I wish they would have some tables so we could sit and enjoy the ice cream, it's only a store where you get the ice cream and go, like a drive thru. I really recommend you check it.

Justin Pong

Google
This ice cream is some of the best soft serve in the state; truly a hidden gem! They offer a wide variety of flavors, and they have cups or cones. Prices are also good, especially for the quality of the ice cream and toppings. I will will always be coming back to this place with my family!

Liz Wagner

Google
This is one of those places I almost don't want to review because I don't want more people to find this gem and make the line longer. 😂 Was in town for a week and went here twice. Old school, simple, delicious. And cash only.

Bill

Google
Absolutely delicious custard, maybe the best I've ever had. We had the brownie sundae with hot fudge, the custard by itself was incredible, and the hot fudge and brownie took it to the next level.

Emilee Klitzing

Google
The best local custard with lots of options!

Rameci Rivera

Google
We waited for 10 minutes in line but it was so worth it!

Simon R

Google
Great sundae. Haven't tried anything else yet but I'll be back!

Google
CASH ONLY!! Big info first. I've been many a time and I've had to see people miss out on the delicious custard. There's usually always a line but it moves quick. I like the ice cream cookie sandwiches. You can get a variety of mix ins too.

Yelp
Absolutely perfect small-but-mighty ice cream shop in south Oak Park, located just over the Ike on Oak Park Avenue!! Be prepared for cash-only, bring an extra dollar or two tip for the server's "College Fund" jar, and know you may have to wait in line during busier times. I got a very generous strawberry cone for $5. No wait at 1:00 on a Thursday. I'm coming back tomorrow for a Dole Whip!

Yelp
This's our favorite dessert spot in the suburbs! Cash only, and close during winter!!! They have vanilla, chocolate custard, and dole whip!! Plenty of toppings and dip to choose from!! Price is very reasonable, there are plenty of parking around, benches outside you can sit. Definitely go try it out if you are in the Oak Park area. There might be a line, but moves by quick!! The store is small, only fits 1 party at a time, the staffs are very friendly!! You will not disappoint!!

Yelp
We were referred here at Cooper's Hawk when we asked where to get ice cream on Juneteenth. We drove over, parked, and waited almost an hour in line, which stretched down the block but moved. People were friendly and anxious, not impatient at all, that's how I knew I was in the suburbs! It is very small, no seating inside, with 2-3 kids working. We examined the menu (CASH ONLY) and decided we wanted custard ice cream with a dip top. I got vanilla (custard or yogurt? don't remember) cup with butterscotch diptop and coconuts on the side. It was SOO good esp on a hot evening! The kids working were holding a fundraiser for attending college, so please be generous! They were so nice and patient about explaining the process. I am not fond of the no seats, but it's less overhead, less cleaning, and there is a bench outside.

Yelp
Very tasty custard in Oak Park, reminiscent of Kohr Brothers on the Jersey Shore and Scooter's on the North Side. The name couldn't be more true, this is almost quite literally a hole in the wall. One person at a time, very quick service, cash only. It's just chocolate and vanilla here, with a ton of different topping options, so it's a pretty quick decision, but there is a slight Soup Nazi vibe when you're between a few toppings knowing there's a dozen people waiting in line behind you. The custard is well made, light but with a great texture. Even sitting out front in 90 degree heat, melting was minimal, which was impressive. I'm not sure it's worth the drive if it's out of your way, but if you're near the area or it's your neighborhood spot, you really can't ask for too much more.

Yelp
Still thinking about the summer when I was able to hit up Oak Park's most popular ice cream place , a true "Hole in the Wall"! Lines and lines of people and friendly student staff that serve up cold delights. can't wait till it opens up again next year . #icecream #dessert #chicago #oakpark

Yelp
No frills but tasty bites. The dole whip is tasty and the serving size are good. The service is quick in the quirky little space. It is importantly to know they are cash only.

Yelp
Name is perfect for this hole in the wall custard shop! On my first visit, the line had about 20 people in line. The person in front of me said it was worth the wait, and she was right! Their menu has something for everyone. The custard was so creamy. They also are very generous with even the small sizes! I tried the chocolate dip, which was really good. I would recommend getting a cup because it melts so quickly from the warmer weather. I went for a second visit today to get some Dole Whip! I definitely see myself coming here regularly. Staff have been very friendly and helpful both times. *Note: CASH ONLY* There's a ATM a block down the street.

Yelp
Warmer weather calls for ice cream and this is my go-to spot! It's a small shop in Oak Park with very friendly staff and a large number of ice cream treats. You can get cones, custard filled cookies, sundaes, shakes, slushies, floats and more. My favorite is the chocolate-vanilla swirl cone It comes in small, medium and large. I usually get the medium. It's so smooth and creamy. I've also had the turtle sundae and the oatmeal raisin custard filled cookie. Everything is so yummy and perfect if you want a treat. They are closed during the winter months and reopen in the spring. Excellent customer service, cash only, highly recommended!
google avatar

Fernilla S.

Yelp
My favorite is the vanilla custard and butterscotch dip. Dole whip also is amazing. Keep in mind they are cash only. There is only a bit of outdoor seating. Service is usually hs college students who are always friendly. I love this place. Sad that it closes during the winter.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent neighborhood custard (ice cream) shoppe! This is a tiny storefront where the line forms outside and once you enter, you order and are quickly served and on your way. They have a very efficient system and it seems to work well for everyone. Parking is street only and there are several benches scattered around with some shade trees where you can sit and enjoy your treat. The custard itself is very good. It's creamy and close to an ice cream texture and taste which I prefer. Hopefully, we will return every time we visit Chicago!

Yelp
Best local ice cream shop. Love the dole whip, freezins, and soft serve. Large menu but all of it is perfected. Service is great. Line can be long but so worth it.

Jayne G.

Yelp
Best I've cream shop in Oak Park!! I love this place. We are so lucky to have this ice cream shop in OP.

Britt P.

Yelp
Cash only and often a very long line. It is worth the wait. My usual order is a swirl in a dish, sometimes with brownie pieces. Brownies are homemade, unlike other ice cream shops.
google avatar

Carleen T.

Yelp
Amazing custard and frozen treats--the kind you'd normally find off an ice cream truck. I'm only giving them 4 stars because there's no room to sit inside (have to kind of stand around outside) and they're cash only.

Judy B.

Yelp
Ice cream is delicious Ppl behind the counter have always been friendly we've been going here for years with kids and now grandkids

Anne G.

Yelp
Awesome custard. Worth the trip. Get napkins for drips . . . you won't mind a little drippy mess once you taste this custard.

E W.

Yelp
All around fabulous spot for an ice cream cone, Dole Whip or a sundae! Our family favorite is the dipped cones - try them all!
google avatar

Yum Y.

Yelp
The custard is creamy and delicious. Step up to the counter and order. There's often a line in the evenings. Cash only. Offerings includes, comes, shakes, blended toppings into the frozen custard, frozen bananas (the money's in the banana stand?), ice cream sandwiches, sundaes, etc. The ever popular dip cone comes in many combinations. Choose your custard: vanilla, chocolate, or swirl. Choose your dip: chocolate, cherry, butterscotch, peanut butter. But whatever combination you choose, eat it fast because it will melt all over your hands, clothes, and face. Pro tip: bring wipes.

Grace R.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream, super helpful and kind staff and really good prices!!! 100% recommend!

Annie F.

Yelp
Love!!! Go often. Excellent, friendly service and delicious custard! My favorite is the dipped cone (the blue raspberry is the BEST!) but everything I've gotten is 10/10 amazing! Love that it's a small, local spot!
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
Delicious! Right off the Oak Park blue line stop. Enough options of traditional and new flavors. There might be a line at night and that's just cuz their awesome and delicious!

Georg T.

Yelp
Dole Whips! In Chicagoland! What more do you need? How about a great selection of other dessert? As long as you don't mind having to eat outside, this place can't be beat.
google avatar

Angela D.

Yelp
Amazing! First time here and we'll definitely be back. Line at 7pm took about 15-20 minutes to order. We tried a peanut butter dipped (which my daughter thought was the best thing ever), a marshmallow sundae, and a strawberry cheesecake freeze in. All were delicious! It's cash only so make sure to remember that when you go. Everything we got was around $15 total.
google avatar

Laura D.

Yelp
Do NOT sleep on the pineapple Dole whip or even just visiting Hole in the Wall! It is so, so delicious, especially the pineapple Dole whip (did I already say that?). It's so good that my chocolate-loving 5-year-old asked to go back before they close for the season for more pineapple Dole whip, because it in her words "It's even more yummy than chocolate!" Hurry, & stop by before they close for the season on October 8.
google avatar

Laurie W.

Yelp
Delicious dole whip in yummy flavors and cheerful service ! The lemon was amazing! Just make sure to bring cash.

Yelp
You won't be able to spot too many holes in their wall because this place is very tiny. Whatever the wall they have is either filled with menu or delicious photos of frozen treats! "Hole in the wall custard" is a cash-only establishment. I remember that they open seasonally. There are some bench seating outside along Oak Park Ave., but hubby and I usually grab n' go. Their mint chocolate brownie sundae is SO good! A regular size should be enough for a healthy appetite. Everything in the cup is super rich. You are certainly going to feel very, very guilty upon finishing. Therefore, be ready to hit the gym after having one. Their soft serve swirl is also delicious. I know it's too bad that I don't always carry enough cash with me. On the flip side, not having something from "Hole in the wall custard" all the time is probably a healthy-conscious decision, for lots of self-control is needed. Street parking is available (maybe free on the weekends, yet do check in at a meter to see if you're off the hook). It's also convenient with taking public transportation: CTA Oak Park Blue Line station is steps away.

Yelp
Cash-only but DELICIOUS ice cream. Tiny little place, only standing room for maybe 4 people at a time at most, but they are dog-friendly and allow pups to come inside with you while you order. They have tons of options including 3 kinds of pups (vanilla ice cream, frozen yogurt, or whipped cream). Reasonably priced; a small classic chocolate-vanilla swirl and a small frozen yogurt pup cup cost $5.75. Was served by the friendly female owner. Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Delicious soft serve! The dip tops melt fast so eat fast. Also recommend the dole whip.

Randy S.

Yelp
Great little spot for custard. Be prepared to stand in line outside but definitely worth the wait.
google avatar

Siobhan D.

Yelp
Cash only and so tiny you need to be prepared to wait outside in line on the sidewalk for your turn to step inside. I got a medium swirl cone, $3.50, plus tip. The two college-age girls working today were both very efficient and pleasant. That's got to be a tough summer gig. They are working in such close quarters. But they were both sweet and speedy in delivering a cone in just a few seconds. Lot parking over the bridge behind the bank, just 50 cents for the time it took to run across the bridge and back.

Kai S.

Yelp
Really great ice cream. I love everything but their homemade drumsticks and ice cream sandwiches are really good! I also love the Sundaes and the dipped cones.

Annie H.

Yelp
AMAZING LOVE THIS PLACE best swirl custard in town could not live without -Annie H age 11

Monique C.

Yelp
CASH ONLY! Such a cute little place. Lots of selection and good prices. Quick service and a delicious product. No indoor seating, but there are benches along the side walk if you want to sit.

Mary F.

Yelp
Delicious and a great value! I was pleasantly surprised that it lived up to the good reviews. The line might be long, but it goes quickly and it's worth it.
google avatar

Trina K.

Yelp
I was passing this place after 9pm and saw a long line. What did I do? I quickly pulled over and got in line too!! I have passed this place tons of times during winter months and it's closed. I would often say I'll visit in summer so this was my chance. This small establishment is truly a hidden gem. I ordered a medium swirl custard cone with a peanut butter dip top. It was absolutely delicious. As I enjoyed my cone, I noticed several people ordered their sundaes and they looked pretty amazing too. This was one of the best ice cream parlors I have visited in a while. If you are craving a frozen treat, I suspect the ice cream, custard, slushies and other cool treats here will meet the need. A true neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Yes! I loved it. Got the mint brownie with fudge and it was all sorts of delicious and totally worth the wait. They were only allowing one group at a time in the store due to covid.
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
Great little place to get a little treat to cool you down! They weren't kidding about their name either so be prepared to wait a minute or two. Don't worry though because the line goes quick! Located just off Oak Park exit off the blue line this is a perfect location to pick something up on your walk home. Remember CASH ONLY!!
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
Went here after doing the Frank Lloyd tour. It's small but they had Dole whip and it was a warm day so it hit the spot. I waited about 10 mins in line but when I was leaving the line was even longer. I didn't notice it was Cash only so thank goodness I had cash on me.
google avatar

Amber C.

Yelp
This place really is a hole in the wall. Perfect for an after dinner treat in the summer. A couple things to mention: there is no seating inside but a few benches are on the street outside, they only take cash and they stop serving food after 6pm. Despite all of these things this place is really good! We tried the mint brownie sundae and the strawberry cheesecake sundae. Both had lots of flavor and actually brownie or cheesecake chunks. I recommend this place when the weather calls for a refreshing treat.
google avatar

Breanna M.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time and was pretty impressed with the amount of custard you get for the price! I got a nice sized small vanilla custard with Oreos for about $3.50. I should have gotten a medium because after I finished it, I wanted more! It was pretty yummy. Simple, but satisfying. I'm really glad that I finally tried this place. Although I'm not a huge fan of the space (it really is a hole in the wall), I still recommend checking it out if you're in the area. Oh, and bring cash!

Cody J.

Yelp
Very cool place and tasty ice cream, cherry dip was the way to go. Menu was a bit much but they were helpful in explaining things.
google avatar

Kathy W.

Yelp
The small and medium cones seem to be the same size. Maybe need better training. The ice cream is good but portions too small.
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
This place is a beyond-incredible Oak Park institution. On several occasions it has absolutely made my day. Not only do they have old-fashioned ice cream truck standards (like Chipwiches and that most glorious of novelties, the Choco Taco), but also homemade ice cream sandwiches, frozen yogurt, blizzard-esque candy/ice cream mixtures, as well as soft serve custard. Last time I went, I had their chocolate custard dipped in a peanut butter shell, and I danced the whole way home eating it. Prices are more than reasonable (my cone was about $3). You should be prepared to wait in line, and there's nowhere to sit except for a bench outside the stand, but if you ask me, you can forget anything Frank Lloyd Wright or Ernest Hemingway... Going to the Hole in the Wall is enough of a treat to warrant a trip to Oak Park all on its own.

Simone C.

Yelp
This is one of the BEST froyo shops in the U.S I come every other Saturday and they never fail to impress me with something new if you ask the worker to give you their favorite. Overall highly recommend this!
google avatar

Kaitlyn R.

Yelp
CASH ONLY!!! Spontaneously stopped here because the line was long and out the door so naturally, seems like a popping place. According to the cashier and the 5 year old behind me, most popular thing is a chocolate vanilla swirl ice cream coat dipped in chocolate. They are right, shit is the bomb. The ice cream is SO creamy so for all you lactose intolerance people, bring them lactose. The chocolate dip was a great finish and it perfectly contoured the swirls on the cone. Beautiful. The cone was definitely from Walmart but non the less, was amazing. Sat on the hood of my car on the side of the road at night and ate ice cream with a friend and talk. Very home made and childhood nostalgia. Will come again!
google avatar

Stephen John S.

Yelp
Oh, so special! One of those places that has all sorts of nostalgia built in. To begin with, it is a HOLE IN THE WALL. A little bitty store front, but all sorts of goodness inside. Fantastic custard with all types of possible concoctions.
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
Very small place on an inconspicuous corner off 290. Simple, no frills ice cream chop that's airy and great for that hot summer day which eludes al us Chicagoans so far. Very affordable cash only establishment.

Susan B.

Yelp
I've been going to this ice cream shop since I was a kid, took my daughter, and now my granddaughters. They are only open from Spring through Summer into early fall. Stopping here after a day of swimming, or as an evening treat, has become a family tradition. The only seating is on the bench or door stoops outside, and it's the perfect place to enjoy your ice cream and catch up on the days events. This shop serves soft serve ice cream, frozen yogurt, and Dole Whip creations, along with some frozen ice cream bars. There are so many tasty options that you'll have to come back a few times to try them all. They only take cash, so come prepared. On a warm summer night you might stand in line for a few min, but that will give you time to decide on your treat for the evening, and it's well worth it. The service is always welcoming and friendly. The shop is employed by high school and college kids, so leave a tip for their education. All in all a wonderful place to enjoy some sweet sensations.
google avatar

Betty P.

Yelp
Oh happy day! Hole in the Wall is back in business for the summer time! This place reminds me of a Mickey ice cream from my childhood that doesn't exist anymore. But the ice cream is so creamy and yummy! Every time I go I get the same thing Bc I'm just in love with it! A swirl strawberry sundae! The lines are usually long with a great neighborhood feel! all of the kids and parents know each other so it's cute to hear their stories as I wait. I wish this place had been open during my winter pregnancy. But then again that might be a good thing that it wasn't because I prob would have gained a few dozen lbs! Lol stop by and try it! FYI: Cash Only and bring patience! Prices are very fair too. 2 large sundaes were $9.
