As you walk out to your car after checking in, get ready to be ambushed with the "welcome gift" trick. A staff member offers you a choice between $140 cash or hotel credit. Sounds generous... until they drop the "just a short tour" line. Heard that one before (Timeshare, anyone?) Welcome gift? More like a bait-and-switch. And they kept asking us, every damn day.
If that's your thing, SeaWorld's vacation center offers a similar Wyndham deal, but their bribe, I mean "welcome gift", is better.
The resort itself...
It's built for kids. Water slides, splash pad, pool, mini golf, arcade, small basketball court, Gatorland show, folding chair movie theater, and a shuttle to Disney. Most activities are free, but the arcade is NOT (pricey).
Food? Kids under 11 eat free with a paid adult entrée at the breakfast buffet and Hideaway Grill (the best spot). Most dining options don't open until 4 p.m., and gratuity is automatically added.
Close to Seaworld (10 min drive).
Holiday Inn should drop the resort part. It's less resort, more "family-friendly condo complex."
Ask to stay near the pool and mall area (where reception, arcade, food court, and theater are located) to be within walking distance. Poolside rooms are noisy, keep that in mind.
Housekeeping is every 5 days, but we got daily service! Honestly, that alone deserves 5 stars. Tip your housekeepers, they work hard and are often overlooked.
The staff? Stellar. Most were kind and helpful (when not trying to sell us a timeshare). Their friendliness truly made the stay more enjoyable.
Construction was happening, but it didn't affect us. (We stayed in Building 9) Our 2-bedroom suite was spacious, perfect for a family of five with young kids, and had bunk beds the kids loved.
Downside? Bugs. Specifically, gnats. It's Florida, but still. Ugh.
TV options were basic cable, no streaming (no Netflix), which felt like a personal attack. Free Wi-Fi, though, so you can stream on your own device.
Now for the part that stings...
Our $600 stay ballooned to $800. Resort fee: $65/night + tax. Parking fee: $29/night + tax. Then $85/night because capitalism. Add in the 12.5% tax-on-tax cocktail and BOOM, that 5 star drops to 3.
The site says, "the Total Price is an estimate." So read everything, especially the Description of taxes and additional charges, part.
Can you ask to waive the junk fees? Sure. Will they waive them? Doubtful. Be polite, though, the front desk staff aren't the villains here.
Final verdict: Would we return?
NEGATIVE, GHOSTRIDER. We're sticking with Marriott.
But to be fair: the staff was amazing, the kids had a blast, and the suite was solid. Just be prepared for the timeshare circus and the theft aka junk fees.
