Great place to eat. Food came out simple but so well prepared. Really happy to try local food and not the mediocre tourist trap area restaurants. Possibly the most satisfying meal we had in Amsterdam. The schnitzel was so crispy and delicious. Stewed beef was fantastic. Pork chop was juicy and tender. Concerned it was a bit undercooked in some areas though. Liver was very interesting but delicious.

If you're looking for homestyle, traditional cuisine at reasonable prices, this cozy little spot in Amsterdam is a true find. The food is authentic and satisfying, offering comforting simple dishes that feel lovingly prepared. The staff is quick and attentive, making you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. The restaurant is small and busy, so I highly recommend booking a table in advance to secure a seat. The charming interior adds to the overall experience, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to return to, not just for the food, but for the whole vibe.

Google
This was the most amazing restaurant. It is a family- style restaurant with authentic Dutch food. The place is tiny so a reservation is ideal, but they were very generous at fitting me in as a solo traveler. The food was SO good. This was my favorite meal in Amsterdam. I highly recommend!

Google
We ordered traditional Dutch dishes, although they are nothing special like in Croatia where we come from. Quite expensive prices for such simple dishes - chicken breast fried in a pan with pepper sauce and classic beef goulash (the meat was excellent) and a side dish of boiled potatoes and vegetables (it was not presented what the vegetables were, in the end it was boiled carrots and peas and something else we were not sure what it was, but it was not delicious). The employees were very friendly.

Google
Nice family restaurant serving hearty, simple, down-to-earth homemade dishes and frequented by locals. I liked the beef stew, which is delicious and comes with generous portions of beans and potatoes. The restaurant is very small and reservation is highly recommended. I tried to go to this restaurant twice: first time I showed up around 6pm and all the tables were occupied; second time I showed up around 5pm on a weekday night and managed to snatch one out of two empty tables, except that my table was spoken for starting from 6pm. So if you plan to dine there between 6-8pm, I highly recommend you make a reservation because all their tables get booked up starting from 6pm even on a random weekday. I really like the photos/pictures hanging on the walls.

Google
I emailed about 10 days beforehand & received a reply really quickly confirming my booking. Sadly they couldn’t find it when I arrived but accommodated us as we were there at 6.30pm. Phew The staff were friendly, approachable and made us feel welcome in “Yummy bites”. I had the stewed beef which was tasty, filling and just the right portion size. Also thought I’d try the home made pudding, sadly not to my type as it was really sweet and an odd consistency but I’m glad I tried it. Would recommend a visit but if you want a table and haven’t booked then go early.

Google
Fantastic Local restaurant that serves authentic Dutch cuisine. The award winning Viennese Scitchzel was really good and the stewed beef exceptional. It is a small and cozy place so make reservations in advance as it is ofen full. The service was fast and friendly, we will definitely be back when visiting Amsterdam.

Google
Small restaurant, very much recommended reservations. We lucked out by being there when they opened. Solid food, schnitzel with boiled or fried potatoes. Super pork chop. Meatballs. All delicious. Lots of veggies including simple but addictive cooked cabbage and carrots.

Yelp
This was our first time in Amsterdam and we wanted to try some authentic Dutch food for our first dinner. We Yelped for the area and Hap Hmm came up as a place that locals frequent and has good reviews. On their business card, it says: "Specialist in Hollands eten!" which is just what we wanted. We are so happy we went here as the food was delicious and the place was pretty busy with lots of friends chatting with the staff as regulars do. The staff was super friendly and always checking up on us. I had the waitress-recommended Runderlap + gebakken aardappel. If you don't read Dutch (like me!) it was a Hap Hmm specialty family recipe from 1965 and was essentially stewed beef. I was super tender and served in a thick sauce that made me savor every bit. My daughter had the Vegetarian schnitzel and my wife had the prize winning Wienerschnitzel. I tasted each and they all were super tasty. The meals came with sides that included spinach, Fava beans (I think) and a ratatouille. Hap Humm really emphasizes quality home made foods with time tested family recipes and great service. I will definitely return here next time I'm in Amsterdam.

Yelp
Lots of locals dining here, and we could see why! This was traditional Dutch comfort food, and we were visiting in the depths of January. Prices were very reasonable for the city. We had two entrees, a beer, a wine, and water for 46€. The portion sizes were generous and came with plenty of hot veggies on the side to share. I had the wienerschnitzel with the sauce of the day and a squeeze of lemon. It was hearty and filling on a cold Amsterdam day after walking my feet off! Definitely a hidden gem.

Yelp
Home cooking done expertly. No frills in the best way, the food spoke for itself. The schnitzel and the beef stew were among the best we've ever had. This small restaurant felt homey in the best way and the service was excellent. Definitely worth a shot to try danish home cooking.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Hap Hmm is a cozy restaurant with a small interior. There did not seem to be many tourists when we went. The lighting inside was dim and romantic, perfect for an intimate meal. Service: We made a reservation in advance through email, though there weren't many people at the restaurant. Our server was prompt with taking our order. Though there was a bit of a language barrier, we were still able to communicate and ask questions about the food. Hap Hmm doesn't take card, so make sure you bring cash! Food: We ordered the specialty Beef Stew and the Beer Chicken, as well as a Brouwerij 't IJ beer. The meal came with sides of various vegetables, including carrots, peas, and broccoli, and a big bowl of mashed potatoes. The chicken and beef were both very tender and flavorful, but were stewed in a broth that was a bit too salty and heavy for our liking. The sides by themselves weren't stellar or of top quality but went well with the meats. The beer, per our server's recommendation, paired nicely with the deep flavors of the stews. Overall: We liked Hap Hmm's atmosphere, and the food was filling. However, we felt that the restaurant was a bit overhyped, as we essentially got a simple meal of meat and potatoes. We would look to explore other restaurants due to our personal taste preferences, but Hap Hmm seems like a great place to try traditional Dutch food.

Yelp
Excellent food. Great service. Limited cocktail choices, mostly wine and beer. Great choice for us. Really liked the vibe/ambiance.

Yelp
A wonderful meal in a lovely small family owned Dutch restaurant. Beef stew was very tender and my husband's schnitzel with pepper sauce was outstanding. We wanted to lick the plates! We will be going back soon as we're here for the next 4 weeks.

Yelp
In A Nutshell: -Hap Hmm is the place where true locals go to grab an authentic Dutch meal. -Several reviews have recommended making a reservation, but I was able to walk in as soon as they opened at 5pm. -I did hear the phone ring several times from people calling to make reservations for later times, so if you decide to eat a late dinner, I would advise calling ahead. -I met this man who has been eating nearly everyday here, he was super nice & I sat down to eat dinner/chat. -The family that works there is very kind, I felt like I was invited into their house for dinner. -The menu is short & simple. -I first ordered the Dutch Shrimp Salad (the tiny shrimp are fresh from the North Sea), it was served a small glass cup w/ some greens & dressing. -My main course was the Viennese Schnitzel which comes w/ a side of boiled or roasted potatoes & peas/carrots. -I love eating schnitzel when I visit Europe & theirs did not disappoint :) -The boiled potatoes & peas/carrots paired perfectly. Overall, the prices aren't bad, very affordable & the entire dining experience was very homely.

Yelp
I love this place. We used to be the only tourist here. They have been discovered now but still provide an authentic Dutch experience. Ypu will hear more Dutch than English. They serve the stew with a spoon. You do not need a knife . Great service.

Debra B.

Yelp
Dutch home cooking - delicious. Not everyone's favorite, but the liver was delicate and tender. Make reservations because it's tiny.

Kathy H.

Yelp
Intimate setting (small! So get a phone rez) and delicious Dutch cooking. Most patrons were locals and older, so we anticipated a great meal. Not disappointed! Service was just as stellar. Only wished they sold the tshirts.

Yelp
I ate at this restaurant with my family during our stay in Amsterdam in mid-October. While service left a bit to be desired the first time, it was good during our second visit, and I felt taken cared of in an intimate setting. The area is kinda off the beaten path in Amsterdam, which also gives it a bit of its charm. Apple Maps would direct you to get off at Leiseplein tram station and then walk there. However, in my experience, it's better to get off at the 1e Con. Huygensstrast tram station, and then walk to the restaurant. Remember to take cash! This restaurant does not take credit card. The first night, we had Wienerschnitzel, Dutch steak, and pork chop. The second night, we had veal liver with baked onion and beef stew. This is most likely Dutch food at its best: unpretentious and flavorful. The Dutch steak was just right with the temperature, and was not overdone or undercooked for my taste. The Wienerschnitzel was pretty good, and the veal liver was not gamey. Gamey food is a big no-no for me. The assorted vegetable side dishes were also a surprise, especially the red cabbage with applesauce! Tastes like fall, which fit the occasion! I will definitely be back at the restaurant when I return to Amsterdam. This hidden gem must be explored.

Yunglin G.

Yelp
Delicious! Meals come with wholesome vegetable sides too! You can make reservations by phone. Very happy tummy.

Yelp
Best meal in Amsterdam. Make a reservation by phone! It's incredible food, cozy ambience and great prices!

Yelp
Soooooo good! We came early and was able to get a seat in the limited seating restaurant. They don't take reservations. So far this place is our favorite since we arrived in Amsterdam. Cute, clean, good quality food and friendly service. I saw that the stew was a specialty of theirs and ordered it. Amazing! All the sides are served family style and there is plenty to go around. I'd definitely come back if ever in Amsterdam again.

Yelp
I loved this little place that is known for their authentic dutch food. It's not over-priced and be sure to get there early! It's very popular and there was a line when my friend and I arrived.

Yelp
Beef stew (their specialty) was amazing!! Definitely a specialty here. So tender and soft, and the broth was very rich and flavorful, although certainly a bit salty. Weinerschnitzel with black pepper sauce (instead of mushroom because that ran out) was delicious though nothing special or mind-blowing. Our sides were boiled potatoes and vegetables. The gravy for the potatoes was amazing and, I believe, homemade. Certainly better than any gravy I had in the USA! Vegetables were pretty standard, but all the portions were generous. Amsterdam chicken (cooked in beer) was served in a similar style as the beef stew and was good but a bit too dry and salty. As for dessert, I had stewed rhubarb, and it was sweet yet also tart, and delicious (full disclosure: that was my first time ever to try rhubarb).

Yelp
One could say the book of traditional Dutch food is very thin. Here is one of the few places to get a sample of it; and a tasty one at that but you gotta remember the key here is simple foods and simple flavors. There's a line...be ready to wait or send your hapless tourist friend early to wait in the queue (which is what my friends did to me).

Yelp
Delicious Dutch food. Honestly reminds me of traditional American foods such as pot roast, meatballs, fish etc. However, this food was sooo fresh and homemade... definitely a hidden gem. Amsterdam is full of culture and ethnic foods so it was nice to stop and have some traditional Dutch food. Service is great, I highly recommend. Tip: look out for the pink menu= English.

Yelp
Hap-Hmm was the traditional place we were craving. We talked about wanting traditional Dutch food and this place delivered. It is a higher class restaurant so be ready to pay a little more but it is most definitely worth it. We started with the soup of the day, which happened to be chicken this day, and it was very good but the true meal came when our entrée came out. I got the Butter Soft Beef Steak and she got a pork-chop and we both had boiled potato's and broccoli served family style. It was a wonderful experience and an amazing meal.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised. My limited knowledge of European staples tend towards meat and potato type images. Of course, the best dish we had was meat and potatoes. The service was warm and hospitable. Lots of friendly local regulars. The hostess rescued as by giving the restless wailing one a box of toys and a fun looking high chair. The breakdown: - Fish of the day dish - uber fresh white fish - Weinerschnitzel - we ordered thinking it'd be a sausage. Turns out to be a breaded piece of flattened fried pork. - Beef stew - stick with boiled potatoes. Eat it like the locals. Mash your boiled tatoes up, pour the beef stew over them, mash somemore, stuff your face. Nom nom. All the main dishes came with a side. The server was kind enough to give us 3 different varieties of sides - Boiled potatoes - Cabbage stew type thing - uber yummy - Boiled green beans On hindsight, we should have opted for the other house special - meatballs.

Yelp
well, if you are new to netherlands and would like to taste a simple dutch food, then this could be one of the places to go to. I've heard a lot about this restaurant from social media, so decided to try it out. small place with odd closing hours and are not open on the weekends which is strange! Food is ok, not exceptional, pretty much surrounded by tourists. Hardly any locals inside! their steak is good, wine's are priced well and are great. you get a lot of vegitables, which is quite health. Overall, healthy food at a reasonable price in Amsterdam city center. Don't pick this on a fancy date or for a party! Service is very good btw!
google avatar

William R.

Yelp
Moderately priced mediocre Dutch food. I think they get their vegetables straight out of a can for some dishes. Good crowd of locals who seemed rather happy with solid if uninspired fare.

Yelp
I usually take my out of town guests to The Pantry near Leidseplein for typical Dutch food, but thought I would give this restaurant a try since I saw it on the I amsterdam website. Takeaway message - go to The Pantry instead if you want to try Dutch food. Yes, this place is filled with locals but mostly older men who are trying to fill their bellies with cheap food. I found the food to be overly salty and the service as well... Food: 2/5 We ordered the stewed beef and the chicken piri piri. They came with sides - vegetables (carrots, spinach and peas) and potatoes. I'm really not sure what other people were talking about when they said the portions were large. The portions were small, even by normal Dutch standards. The chicken was just a single thigh, and the stewed beef was served in a tiny creme brulee sized ramekin. Almost all of the food was too salty (stewed beef) or sour (spinach), with the exception of the carrots - those were tasty but seriously? Well-cooked carrots are not enough to redeem this meal. Service: 2/5 Weirdly enough on the English menu, there was a line that said "couvert - 5 euros" but it did not appear on the Dutch menu. The meaning of this revealed itself when we asked for an extra plate so that we could share some of the food, the waitress sharply replied that she could give us a plate but it would cost 5 euros. Why on earth would you charge extra for a plate? You already charge for water! Atmosphere: 3/5 It does feel like a Dutch grandma's house , all cosy and gezellig with long shared tables, but this grandma is losing her sense of taste and tends to put too much salt in everything. Also, she isn't afraid to sass you because darn it she is old and can do whatever she wants! Value: 2/5 The entrees were around 10 euros which is very cheap for Amsterdam, but it is clear that this is because the portion sizes are so much smaller. You may need 2 of these dishes to feel full, unless they are hoping you will get full just eating all the potatoes...

Yelp
Amazing. So wonderful. The highlight of our trip. This is a family place, and you are treated as such. Eat what the locals suggest/ what is being served that day and love it!!!! Savor every moment of the time you spend here, or just move close by and forget about cooking. Its not gourmet, but that's not what it's supposed to be. It's family food that's fantastically priced and enjoyed with new friends.

Yelp
Found it on the "top 10 Dutch restaurants list" on a website for Amsterdam. I was sold when I read it was close to my hostel and offered great prices. Entire meal under 20 euro consisted of a beer, split appetizer, main dish, a desert, and a cappuccino. For that price the taste still tasted 5 star. Tender beef, fresh vegetables, great shrimp, and an awesome desert. The atmosphere was amazing, my friend and i were the only tourists in there and the place feels like your eating in someones dining room. The service was very friendly and helpful and the food came quick. Will definitely recommend to anyone visiting Amsterdam, and will also come back if I'm in town again.
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
This is a very local restaurant where they have a lot of old customer coming back for the same food. The price were average. These are comfort food, so I don't expect much from it. I ordered the beef stew, and it tasted like homemade, cuz I make the same beef stew. However, their beef stew is a bit too salty for me. You can taste their vegetables are fresh. Don't come with a large group, they have very limited seats.

Yelp
Came to Amsterdam to experience some authentic Dutch food. This place ticked all of the boxes. I ordered the Schnitzel while my girlfriend ordered the Mother Meatballs. Both were amazing dishes! You also have a choice for boiled potatoes or fried potatoes. The fried potatoes are amazing because they come with mayo. The boiled potatoes are also amazing because it compliments the food. This place is great, you need to come to this small restaurant when you come to Amsterdam.
google avatar

Todd J.

Yelp
This was an authentic dutch restaurant with Dutch food service and dutch locals. Prices were fair (9 euros for a main dish) although the water was rather expensive. Next time I'd opt for wine.
google avatar

Neal P.

Yelp
Great place. Seemed filled with 75% locals and 25% tourists. Meat and veggies were tasty. Service was prompt after a short wait (I called first and they said no reservations). Entrees about $10 and seemed like a very reasonable value. Would recommend to anyone looking for a casual and (seemingly to me) authentic Dutch comfort food experience.

Yelp
Hap Hmm--where to begin?! You'll find some haters on here, but not this reviewer! We knew once we stepped inside that this was a good place. There was a line of locals and seasoned tourists returning--a good sign. We were seated promptly and enjoyed local beers (try the IJ Wit from Brouwerij 't IJ). The place is so popular that one should be prepared for a tight squeeze, or even sitting with another party. We started with the soup of the day, a deliciously comfortable tomato and vegetable soup. Then, we ordered Grandma's meatball and the vegetarian schnitzel with pepper sauce. Both were delicious and, contra to other reviewers, we thought the portions were amply sized. Our meal came with a big bowl of frites and two vegetable sides. The latter seem to vary from table to table, and we were given the lima beans and stewed spinach. To be honest, we don't think anyone could make stewed spinach well enough for us to enjoy it, but the lima beans were great! We ended our meal with homemade rice pudding (we were allowed to share without a fuss) and left full, happy, and singing the praises of Hap Hmm for the rest of our trip! Don't miss this place. Proost!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Very nice! Had to queue for a while so I recommend calling ahead. Having tried mine and my friends' dishes I can recommend the meatball over the beef stew. The food was quite salty but otherwise absolutely delicious. Small, friendly restaurant.
google avatar

Kyle K.

Yelp
Loved this place. Simple, traditional Dutch/German type foods served with family style sides of boiled potatoes, broccoli, and I think carrots. Wife had a gulasch (like a beef stew without veggies) and I had a cordon bleu. Both were excellent and good portions with the sides. This is a place that I would absolutely come back to if we are in Amsterdam again, and want something like a good home cooked meal.

Tania H.

Yelp
This place was full when we arrived , locals love the authentic fibe and traditional dutch food. Portions were large and price reasonable . Absolutely the best !
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
Probably the best traditional Dutch food we had in Amsterdam on our whole trip. Great traditional food and a cosy local vibe to suit.

Gerry G.

Yelp
Great little local place. Very busy all the time. On a quiet neighborhood street. You would miss it if you weren't directed there.

Emily L.

Yelp
Our trip to this restaurant was a sad reminder of how differences continue to divide us in this world. Here at this restaurant, in Amsterdam, the home of previous Nazi occupation and Anne Frank's hiding place, my family and I experienced some of the worst racism and hostility we have ever experienced. Having read the good reviews about the food, we were excited to get a taste of local Dutch cuisine, only to be turned away. The waitstaff refused to serve us and while it was only 7:00pm and the restaurant closes at 10:30pm, they told us that there was no way they would be able to serve us that night. There were several other parties who had arrived after us, but only we were told that they could not accommodate us. I am so disappointed by the reception that we received at this restaurant, and I only hope that the restaurant and its staff will read this review and reflect on their own behaviors and prejudices.
