Hollyhock house is a gorgeous little mid-century modern marvel located on a beautiful hill in East Hollywood. Or Los Feliz? I’m not entirely sure… But either way it’s stunning and absolutely worth a visit. I would recommend getting a ticket in advance, but you will definitely be able to find parking when you get here so all around it’s relatively easy to navigate. The space is absolutely gorgeous both the outdoor grounds and the inside which is fully mid-century modern and just eye candy for those that love that style of architecture. Highly recommend a visit here, especially if you live here because I haven’t heard a lot of folks that come and I think it would be a nice thing to do as a local with a group of friends or partner or whatever… I will definitely come back here again!

Built between 1918 and 1921, Hollyhock House was Frank Lloyd Wright’s first Los Angeles commission and an ode to the ideals of freedom and natural beauty that represent California. Designed for the wealthy Aline Barnsdall, the house was to be the centerpiece of a 36-acre arts complex, but the project was not fully completed.
Hollyhock House is a precursor of California Modernism, inducted to the UNESCO World Heritage List along with seven other Wright designs, and today is managed by the City of Los Angeles.
From a visitor’s perspective the house is a visual and experiential delight! Much of the house is accessible and you may essentially roam freely but within reason. When we went it was a beautiful weekend day and people picnic on the lawn outside overlooking the city.

We took our time and stayed about 45min. It's $7 but try to book ahead of time.

A stunning example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s early Los Angeles work and a must-see for architecture lovers. Perched in Barnsdall Art Park, it blends Mayan influences with Wright’s signature style, creating a space that feels both ancient and modern. The layout is thoughtful, with rooms flowing into one another and views intentionally framed by low, geometric thresholds. The attention to detail in the stonework, furniture, and built-ins is remarkable. It’s not a huge house, but it’s full of rich ideas and surprising moments. Peaceful, beautiful, and quietly inspiring.

Never get tired of stopping to see this masterpiece, LA’s first UNESCO World Heritage site. The surrounding park also has wonderful views of the Hollywood sign and a number of outbuildings done in Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style…

I love this house, the location, the fascinating choices of colors, materials, shapes, elements and placements. The well thought through concepts and designs. I will have to come back to see the living room on fire when the sun just hits right and I will have to plaster my living room and use copper to recreate that 😍
