On the Grid : Meat Press

"This little corner sandwich joint has the power to pull you in with an outdoor menu displaying a short list of succulent offerings. Foraging local suppliers and slanting towards the lovely richness of the French-Canadian sensibility, this shop sensitively assembles its masterpieces, compliments them with equally considered sides, and finishes the meal with house-made sodas. Nothing beats taking in the streetscape while sitting on the curb with a hearty sandwich. Go before noon if you have your heart set on something specific that you’ve seen online, it’s popular." - PLOTNONPLOT

Amazing service, DELICIOUS food, wonderful selection of Local Ontario/Canada canned drinks. It was our first coming with a good recommendation from a coworker so we tried two different sandwiches, they were very friendly when we asked if they could cut them in half for us, even doing the same with the different donuts. Got the Holly Hot and Honey Hot sandwich’s, fries, coleslaw and donuts and oh my goodness. Chicken was crispy and tender, fries were tasty, and the donuts were FRESH. We will be back!

This place is a true gem! We enjoyed their friendly service and perfectly delicious food at very reasonable prices. We had a beautiful Holly’s Hot chicken sandwich (which was just delightfully spicy, but didn’t stay around long enough for a photo), plus a generous portion of plain chicken bites with a very tasty honey garlic dipping sauce. We couldn’t resist three wonderful sides: creamy coleslaw, chipotle mac and cheese and cornbread. As if that wasn’t enough, their tiramisu donut looked too good to pass up, so we brought one of those home, too. I look forward to returning again soon!

The habanero hot chicken sandwich was proper spicy but still had good flavour! Finally found a real “HOT” chicken sandwich. The seasoning on the spicy fries is great. I got a Nutella cheesecake donut for desert and it was very fresh, soft and generously filled! Great experience and very reasonably priced. Would come back for more!

I had their popular Hot Chicken Sandwich, large fries, and a cola for around $22. The menu is well balanced and not excessive, and sandwich and fries were good. Re: the sandwich, the baseline "hot" was satisfying, with a good crunch (considering I had to travel a bit before eating), and many more options for elevating that spice are available. I did expect a slightly bigger sandwich based on the photos, and found the sandwich portion was similar to (ever-shrinking) chain offerings like Mary Browns or KFC. The venue is small though not a big issue if ordering take out, though it can be crowded while waiting. The staff are friendly and efficient. I do recommend anyone in the area to stop by and support local. It's quite good!

This is a great spot to stop by for a good chicken sandwich! I tried to hot honey one and it had a little kick to it which was nice. The sides were tried (fried and chipotle mac and cheese) were also good. The space was quite small and it seemed like a few people that wanted to dine-in had to do take out. Additionally, there was no ketchup available to refill so I had to ask for more from the server and she was quite busy with the crowd.

Amazing food! Been here a few times over the last few years and it never disappoints. Got the habenero hot and it was the perfect amount of spice for us. We also always go back for their wings. The wings were crispy, juicy and just done perfectly. Will be a staple moving forward. We’ve also had the Mac and cheese, coleslaw and cornbread and they’re all delicious.

Google
The staff are lovely and the chicken sandwich is as a 10/10! 1 star is taken off because of the mac cheese. I appreciate the unique flavouring however it did feel like there was too much seasoning to the point where you couldn’t taste the cheese. Plus very little bread crumbs on top in comparison to pictures others posted here.

Yelp
I'd give this place a solid 3.5/5. The chicken sandwich was really good and had a nice crispiness to it but the chipotle Mac gave flavour fatigue after 2 bites. As for the donuts, the caramel cream cheese donut was one of the best donuts in Ottawa but the other 2 were just ok. Would definitely go back for the sandwich.

Yelp
My first visit to Holly's Hot Chicken was actually for a donut, lol. So they sell Nashville Hot Chicken sandwiches (with a vegetarian option of cauliflower instead of chicken) and donuts!! My second visit was for the Hot Chicken sandwiches. The donuts are $4 and the flavours change daily. I got the creme brulee and it was pretty tasty. It was soft and fluffy but one side had the hard crunchy glaze that creme brulee has. Such interesting texture! The donut was filled with a rich vanilla custard. I think I saw little black flecks of real vanilla bean in the filling. Surprisingly the donut was not overly sweet, which I appreciated, as "too sweet" is a common complaint of mine with desserts. On my second visit, my husband was with me. I got the Honey Hot Chicken sandwich ($10) and my husband got the Holly's Hot Habanero Chicken sandwich ($10). The sandwiches came on a soft plain brioche bun with iceberg lettuce, pickles and pickled onions. The chicken was super crunchy on the outside and very juicy on the inside. It was a bit too salty and too oily for my tastes, but still a good solid Fried Chicken sandwich. Mine was sweet with a bit of a spicy kick. I had a bite of my husband's and it was too hot for me. It gave me that burny lip tingles feeling that I don't like, haha. He enjoyed it though, but admitted that it was hot, lol. Service was friendly and informative. Street parking only.

Yelp
We used to go to Holly's pop ups. Delicious then. Happy to see her show up with a store front. Went for lunch and the sandwiches are as tasty as ever. I did the honey garlic. I wish I knew her secret for super tender chicken, a beautiful contrast to the crispy coating. It's a simple sandwich with the chicken, sauce, lettuce and cucumber on a really fresh bun. Always willing to go back for more.

Yelp
We'd been meaning to try this spot for ages, so when my husband suggested pizza, I countered with Holly's as my suggestion. And we're both very glad I did. We called ahead for pickup. He ordered 2 Plain Jane sandwiches, I had the Honey Hot. We both ordered a side of fries. It proves to be more than enough food. The sandwiches are more substantial than they appear at first glance. The coating on the chicken was perfectly crispy and the chicken underneath was flavourful and juicy. The Honey Hot sauce turned out to be exactly the level of heat I could manage, tempered by the sweetness. The fries are perfection. Fluffy inside, crispy outside, and lightly salted. And abundant! The entire menu is budget friendly, too.

Yelp
Delicious, spicy, juicy chicken, promptly prepared, and staff who make sure you know the habanero is hot. A delightful addition to the area, and my new go to for chicken.
