On the Grid : The Hollywood Sign

"At the top of Mount Lee is the symbolic Hollywood Sign facing out towards Hollywood. The hike to the top is a right of passage for every Angeleno. We recommend starting at the Bronson Caves (address given) & then hiking to the top, since you can no longer drive to it. It's roughly 60mins. one way so bring a water bottle & wear your hiking shoes!" - Sallie Harrison Design Studio

I took these photos from the side of the Griffith Observatory. My zoom isn’t the best 😬. Staying till after sunset, I don’t know why but I thought the sign illuminated - it didn’t. It would be good to see it glow, even if just for a short period of time. I am not sure if you can get nearer but google maps gave me this location. Enjoy. The Griffin Observatory is a nice site and park walkway. 💫

A different kind of Hollywood Sign experience (with a local secret!) The Hollywood Sign – iconic, world-famous, and still full of surprises. Most people settle for a distant photo… but here’s how you can get up close, from behind, and with the best views in L.A. I started my hike at the Griffith Observatory, taking the Mount Chapel Trail through the Hollywood Hills. It’s not the only way to reach the sign, but it’s honestly one of the most rewarding – less crowded, more nature, and breathtaking views all along the way. And then comes the real magic: You reach a spot right behind the Hollywood Sign, about 20 meters away from those legendary white letters. And in front of you? A jaw-dropping panorama over Los Angeles – from downtown to the ocean (on a clear day). It’s the kind of moment that makes you stop, breathe, and smile. Pro tip: Have your smartphone ready – this spot delivers movie-worthy shots that’ll light up your social feed. Sunset? Pure gold. Also: wear good shoes, bring water, and try to go early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewer people. Bottom line: If you want more than just a tourist photo – if you want an unforgettable experience with a real connection to L.A. – this hike is the way to go.

Seeing the Hollywood Sign in person was an incredible moment! It’s one of those iconic landmarks that makes you feel like you’re truly in the heart of the entertainment world. The view from the trails was amazing, and it’s a perfect spot for photos and taking in the beauty of Los Angeles. A must-see if you’re visiting Hollywood!

Google
I absolutely loved this hike! It’s a beautiful and fairly easy trail with amazing views all the way up. Took about 2 hours round trip via innsdale trail and it wasn’t crowded at all which made the experience even better. The people along the way were super friendly and added to the good vibes, beautiful people and beautiful energy. Once you reach the top, the view is totally worth it! Just a heads-up: parking at the lake hollywood park is limited, so try to get there early if you want a spot. Overall, a great way to spend the day. I’d definitely do it again!

Google
Even though I saw the Hollywood Sign from a distance while walking near downtown, it still felt iconic! The view from the bridge gave a great perspective, and I enjoyed being able to spot such a famous symbol of Los Angeles. Definitely worth a photo! Maybe one day I’ll get closer. 📸✨ Sometimes the best views are the unplanned ones!

Google
Was a great experience not a far walk up neither considering they won’t let you up any higher then to where I got pictures but it was amazing being that close to the Hollywood sign ! 10/10 fun experience !

Google
The hike was not to the Hollywood sign. We didn't finish it but that had to do with our group and we started at 11am. There was almost no shade and it was almost all uphill. Cool views though.

Google
The Hollywood Sign is such an iconic LA experience! We hiked up one of the trails and the views were absolutely worth it — you get a stunning panorama of the city and a close-up look at the sign. It’s a bit of a workout, so bring water and wear good shoes, but the photo ops and the vibe are unbeatable. Definitely a must-do if you’re visiting LA!

Yelp
We walked about 4.3 miles from our Airbnb in Whitley Heights up to the view area. It's an annual tradition which some years involves the much longer route up and down to the backside of the sign. Walking thru the neighborhoods below the sign on a holiday weekend is an exercise in chaos but it's all part of the Hollywood sign magic. This year was no different. It's fun. Plan ahead. Walk don't drive and you will have a good time seeing the local architecture and getting some steps.

Yelp
It is a good sign. It spells Hollywood. I like it. Sometimes I spell it at home. Thank you.

Yelp
A hike to this LA landmark is a must for every able bodied Angeleno. Though there are many routes, I prefer the 2 mile trail from the parking lot at the end of Canyon Drive. Incredible views of the city from high above and from different angles. An absolute must, at least once! For the more adventurous, go above the sign (another 0.7 mile climb), to the top of Mt. Lowe.

Yelp
Basically it's the most famous thing in Hollywood of course. It has been seen by everyone. The Hollywood Sign is like the first thing people look for in L.A. it seems. Has a crap ton of history. You can get closer if you're able to walk up twisty roads and trails. A bit overblown as an attraction. It's actually more than a bit. This is just a sign. Around this is actually better. This is located in Griffith Park, which has a lot to check out. A good way to get here is to go to the Observatory on the free bus. From there, go on the Mount Hollywood Trail. Best way to get here without walking a whole lot. The park closes at dark but the observatory is open. Has quite a few places to see this from. It's just a basic sign to be honest. There's also many observation areas you can see it from before even getting here such as by the Chinese Theatre or wherever.

Yelp
This is a little hard to find, but it's a great piece of nostalgia and Hollywood history. We drove all around Griffith Park (the park that it is located in) and could not find a good view of it. We finally glimpsed it as we were walking on Hollywood Boulevard and snapped our pictures that way. I would suggest just doing that and not going out of your way to try to find/see it up close (you can see it better/fully from afar anyway!)

Yelp
Epic! An absolute must if you are not from Southern California! My fiancé's sister's partner is from Chile (the country) and has not been out of the country or to the United States before. So, we planned a trip to hit all the spots in Southern California, and Hollywood was on there! We drove up into the hills just for fun to check out the houses. I'm sure the residents hate that lol Sorry!! But it was fun! Since we drove up in the evening, it was hard to get a good photo of the Hollywood sign. Still tons of fun! :)
google avatar

Yelp
Wrong day wrong time, somehow, I thought the sign will have lights on 24/7 like a romantic teenager's movie, LOL. That is a Hollywood, and anything can be make up. I have to add more exposure on my camera to be able to get the sign picture brighter. When I got to the area that most people take pictures of the sign. It was completely dark. I saw another group of people hang out and making loud noise. I'm not sure if they were drunk but I feel not safe to get nearby.

Yelp
This trail is beautiful! I wish I had gone sooner, especially since I've lived in California all my life. I went with my friend and time just flew by. The only downside is that it is trail for horses so you will see feces on the trail so becareful to not to step on it. Parking is not too complicated if you go kind of early before 10am. The restrooms are only at the beginning of the trail so try not to drink a lot of water. Other than that enjoy the view & clean air. The elevation is about 900 ft so you can actually see LA Pollution.

Yelp
Hiking to the Hollywood sign is a must when visiting sunny California! I was born in California and spent many nights in Hollywood partying, and enjoying concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, but had never hiked to the iconic sign, and only worshiped it from afar. But it was a "bucket list" item for my wife, and when it's her birthday she gets what she wants! We drove to the dog park on Mulholland Dr., and walked to the next viewing park, before beginning our journey to the top of the mountain that reside behind the sign. It's a long "switch-back" walk uphill, but because we considered it a hike, we went vertical in a few places to shorten the hike and get a workout. I really enjoy long brisk walks so we passed almost everyone we came in contact on the way "up" as well as "down". Motivation for coming down is the absence of restroom facilities along the route (smile). Upon reaching the summit, you can see all that Los Angeles has to offer! Downtown, Griffith Park Observatory, Hollywood Hills, The Reservoir, and lavish homes surrounding the area. It was a slightly hot day, but as we ascended to the sign the gentle breeze became cooler and refreshing. Recommend you pack snacks, and bring bottled water. The journey is well worth your efforts, due to the various photo options, people you meet along the way, and honor you have bestowed upon yourself knowing you completed the journey or approximately 6 miles! Go for it!!!

Yelp
Overall I still do not trust this sign because of what happened last time I was here. With that said, I do find it to be a little bit bigger now. Might consider going back and continuing the relationship PC: Victoria

Yelp
What they don't talk about, is the getting there. We used an Uber to take us to "Hollywood Sign" on GPS. Which was the same as the Uber driver had. That was no where close. You really need to zoom in on the map and drop a pin on the parking lot you want to go to. It is a windy thin road that has signs everywhere that says "no parking on street from 0700-1900". Clearly unenforced. Cars parked on both sides of the street turning many areas into a one way street for both directions. Not cool! We got there on a day that they were filming a Fashion commercial. So there was increased security. Then we walked up a little over a mile to get behind the sign. Mostly a wide paved road, but steep in some areas. You get your best pictures on the way up. Once you're to the top you will be looking at the back of the sign and won't be able to get a great view of all of it. Then we walked to the Griffith Observatory via trail. Which is a whole 'nother story. But it was fun to get some exercise in.

Yelp
Don't feel like hiking over to see it? Here's a place where you can get a good view of it. The famous Hollywood sign that used to be known as "Hollywoodland" is located on Mt Lee in Hollywood Hills. During our Hollywood tour my husband and I learned that we can see it by climbing the steps at the Ovation Hollywood mall which is also home to the Dolby theater where the Oscars are held. Once you make to the top of the stairs you can get to the overlook at Ovation Hollywood. A fake sign lets you know that you are in the right place. Sure the sign is far off but with these zoom lenses they put in cell phones these days you can get a pretty descent picture and zoom out to give some surrounding views. Afterwards you can browse the mall, get a bite to eat or visit the Dolby theater. I'm glad to have gotten this photo op and would recommend it if you are touring the Hollywood area. Located on Hollywood Blvd next to the Dolby theater.

Yelp
Embarking on the journey to the Hollywood sign was nothing short of exhilarating. The trail, though at times challenging, offered a thrilling adventure that ultimately led to an unforgettable experience. The trek up to the sign demands preparation, with ample water, comfortable footwear, and energizing snacks being essential companions. The trail presents its challenges, but with determination, each step becomes a victory. The sense of achievement upon reaching the Hollywood sign is unparalleled. Standing in its presence, one can't help but feel a rush of excitement and pride. The view from this vantage point is breathtaking, offering a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. Moreover, the importance of leaving no trace behind cannot be overstated. Respecting the environment ensures that future generations can also enjoy this magnificent landmark. In conclusion, the journey to the Hollywood sign is not merely a hike; it's an adventure filled with anticipation, challenges, and ultimately, a sense of triumph. It's an experience that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Who doesn't love the iconic Hollywood Sign!? Check HollywoodSign.org for the best hiking trails and to see a close up of the sign 24/7 on their webcam feed.

Yelp
Great time viewing the Hollywood Sign from Griffith Observatory. Took a co-worker from Singapore and one from India. The only part that sucks is the parking. They don't always let you up to the main parking lot even though there are multiple spots up there.

Yelp
While visiting my girlfriend in LA I thought of a great idea to hike up to the Hollywood sign. I wasn't prepared for such a strenuous hike! However, when I finally made it to the top I was quite proud of myself! I was sore for at least 3 days but I felt like I on the road to a healthier lifestyle. Make sure you bring plenty of water and snacks when you take this hike. Maybe even a neck fan in the summer.
google avatar

Miranda M.

Yelp
I really enjoy the hike to the Hollywood sign. I'd say its one of the more difficult hiking trails in Griffith. It offers great views of the city and during spring, there are so many beautiful wild flowers to look at. The trail can get crowded on weekends with lots of dogs. Unfortunately, some folks don't pick up after their dogs.

Yelp
It's one hundred years old, so it's definitely worth the visit. There are lots of things to do here and the neighboring Griffith Observatory. Like normal, we just kind of showed up and did our own thing. It was really hot, and we spent about an hour walking along the trails surrounding the sign. We reached a point where the trails were really steep, so we couldn't make it all the way up. The area surrounding the sign is beautiful. The small hills surrounding a neighborhood that the sign sits above were stunning. I loved the arid, dry landscape. If you're into movies and Hollywood history, it's a must-see. I just wanted to do some cheesy, touristy stuff but ended up having a lot of fun.

Yelp
BEST HIKE WITH MULTIPLE VIEWS It's about a 5 mile round trip walk taking the Brush Canyon Trail. You can take either the Tyrolian Tank Viewing area or to Mount Lee Drive, which puts you directly above and behind the Hollywood sign. It's the closest you can get without being arrested. There is limited free parking in paved lot at Camp Hollywoodland, 3200 Canyon Drive; additional parking in dirt lot just to the south on Canyon Drive. BEST SHORT HIKE is about a 3 mile round trip hike. You can walk up Wonder View Drive to the top of Burbank Peak, then follow the Aileen Getty Ridge Trail to Cahuenga Peak. The hike ends with the same behind the sign view as the hike above. Street parking on Lake Hollywood Drive near Wonder View Drive (which has no parking). BEST VIEW WITHOUT A HIKE is Lake Hollywood Park. It's one of the best spots to view the Hollywood Sign. Plenty of parking on Canyon Lake Drive and you can bring your dog(s)! HORSEBACK RIDING: Sunset Ranch Hollywood offers a 1 or 2 hour guided ride that will offer you nice views of the sign. 3400 N. Beachwood Drive. I've done all of them and my favorites just depend on the mood you are in and whether or not you have kids with you. Remember to bring water and use the restroom before you head out on your hike!

Yelp
Took the hike up to the Hollywood sign. This definitely took some research and planning to execute. Most challenging part was finding where to enter and where to park. From the trailhead I used (corner of Mulholland HWY and Deronda Dr) it's only a 30 min hike to the sign. The local community definitely makes it hard to find the trailhead entrance. Don't try and park in a no parking area either; you will get a ticket!! There's parking enforcement all in the area issuing tickets. Anyways, do your research and hit the hike. You'll enjoy it. I watched a few YouTube videos and read a few articles beforehand--they were all helpful. DM me if you have specific questions. Cheers!

Yelp
Hello Hollywood this year is the Hollywood sign and we got all kinds of memories and pictures and photos and everything with the Hollywood sign. My wife's brother lives right down the street from it so we walked to it and it's about a big giant hill so we didn't get a stand right next to it but we got to see it up close

Manmir A.

Yelp
A must scope out view of this piece history. Can see it from many locations so may have to see which view is best.
google avatar

Yelp
Finally I get to see this iconic sign up close. This is a must visit for locals and tourists. It is busy most of the time. But you will always find a spot to park and to take a good shot. It Offers great view for photo ops. Sometimes you might get lucky and see some IG influencers. Good place for hiking as well.

Levent B.

Yelp
Epic place to visit. The Hollywood Sign is an iconic landmark worldwide. You can visit here with a car or hiking, however get proper equipment when hiking, since there are some rocky hills and difficultier hills to walk through. Overall though, it really was a good experience of mine here watching the Hollywood Sign and the views of Los Angeles.
google avatar

Nina R.

Yelp
Whether you view the iconic Hollywood sign from Beachwood Canyon or you hike up from Lake Hollywood (a relatively easy hike, nicely paved, and wide enough to go with several friends), seeing the big, beautiful, white letters spelling out "Hollywood" is quintessentially LA. Also quintessentially LA: finding parking so you can leave your car behind and make the hike. Read the signs carefully!! I recommend going on a day after a rain. The air will be crisp and clean, the sky will be clear, and you will be able to see forever. It's simply breathtaking.
google avatar

Yelp
First time here even though I have lived in the area off and on for the past 30 years. Found myself wondering why I hadn't done it earlier. Did the hike from Canyon Drive (there are multiple ways to get there), so we initially hiked up behind the sign. Then on our way back down, we walked to get in front of it, then backtracked to get back to our car. Get here early so it is easier to park and less people. It is worth it. Beware of lots of horse poop everywhere; if it is a hot day, it makes it not so pleasant because of the stench.

Yelp
This review refers to hiking to the sign. VIEW: There are multiple ways to hike to the sign. Here are two popular options. On AllTrails: "Hollyridge Trail to Hollywood Sign Viewpoint" for the frontal view and "Hollywood Sign via Canyon Drive" for the back view, behind the letters. I will post photos of the two maps but you can also find them on AllTrails. The trails are pretty well-marked but it can still be confusing especially when you don't know which view of the sign you are getting. The frontal view is the "Hollyridge Trail to Hollywood Sign Viewpoint" on AllTrails. I'm not sure if this name is accurate since you are actually taking the Brush Canyon Trail to the Mulholland Trail. It intersects with the Hollyridge Trail at some point but you don't actually take it. Follow the signs for Tyrolian Tank. You get a nice frontal view of the sign which is great for pictures. It's about 5 miles round trip. The back view is "Hollywood sign via Canyon Drive" on AllTrails. You're headed to Mt. Lee to get a view from behind the sign. It's about 6 miles round trip. If you tried to combine this trail with the frontal view (Tyrolian Tank route), you'd probably end up with somewhere around 7+ miles total round trip. FYI: If you don't want to hike 6 miles to see the back of the sign, you can also get to the top of Mt. Lee by taking an entirely different trail (completely different trailhead). On AllTrails, it's called "Cahuenga Peak via Burbank Peak Trail." It's 2.2 miles and once you reach Cahuenga Peak, it's only about 0.3 miles to the back of the sign on Mt. Lee. INTENSITY: There are quite a few stretches of incline (although it's not anything too steep) and you're also in direct sun almost the entire time. On a very hot day, this hike can be pretty rough, especially for novice hikers. GETTING THERE: To find the trailhead, drive up Canyon Drive (you can plug Camp Hollywoodland into your GPS). There's a small parking area right before the trailhead but it might be full. In that case, you can park at the larger parking area that you passed on the way (it'll increase your hike length but not by too much). If that's full, park on the road. There are two porta-potties in the large parking area but on a hot day, they are super disgusting. Avoid if possible. TIPS: Lots of water, sunblock, a hat, comfortable hiking shoes. If you're coming here later in the day to beat the heat or watch the sunset, be aware that the gates close at 8pm (or at least that's what it says). I have left this area 10-15 minutes after 8pm before and the gates were still open. Not sure if they allow a grace period or what. But if you're staying past 8pm, be aware of the risk.

Yelp
Oh the many times I have seen this sign over the years and how I still get excited each and every time. Whether it be from Lake Hollywood, Lake Hollywood Park, The Griffith Observatory, Mt. Lee Trail, Mulholland Drive, Etc. I have seen it from numerous places, numerous times and I will always enjoy seeing it no matter what is going on at that particular time. Yelp
We are visiting the Southern California area around Hollywood. We wanted to do the most tourist things we could find and the was number one on the list! The road to the park where you can get a great picture is kinda narrow thru beautiful neighborhoods , there are cars parked in front of peoples houses that when a car is coming in the opposite direction you need to wait and be patient, the reward is a really nice park called Lake Hollywood Park. This is a great place to park and take pictures. If your up for it , you can hike from there on up the hill to the Observatory, you cannot drive to the observatory There is a really nice area above the park to get a good selfie with the sign, the visiting folks are all super friendly and I'm sure you can get one of them to take your picture. Be like me , a total tourist and have a blast doing it! Highly recommend

Yelp
Landmark overlooking LA. Today, I finally hiked to it! I've done the Beechwood Drive view (good for quick photos), and I've hiked the Hollyridge trail that starts from the Griffith Observatory (good views but not directly nearby). I would say, of all of them, this hike was the best. Great views of the sign (see my photos), and you get right up to the top, and end up BEHIND the sign. If you are bringing tourists and just want the photos, you can easily capture those in the first half mile of the Innsdale hike. I followed the instructions from the webpage below, and they were perfect in their description. We knew where to go, and did not get lost. https://www.hikespeak.com/trails/hollywood-sign-hike-innsdale-drive-mulholland-highway-mount-lee-drive/ My takeaways, like many others suggested: 1. Go early. Fewer crowds and not as hot. 2. Bring lots of water and take frequent breaks. 3. We were able to hike it in about 2hrs, 15min. Roundtrip. 4. It is uphill the entire way, much of it paved. The last mile to the top is a tad steep, but doable...just take your time. My teenage daughter who has been not exercising during COVID complained all the way to the top. Lol 5. Enjoy the views! They are amazing! 6. Follow social distance guidelines (as of July 2020). 7. One last thing, pay attention to markers...this hike was mixed with dirt, paved, and residential areas...it helps to know how to get back. Enjoy - very unique experience!

Gm L.

Yelp
We went on a (unusual) rainy day and turned around because we didn't want to drive off the cliff it was taking to drive uphill to get there. The natives seemed fine driving up the curvy hill on a rainy tho. Recommend not going in a rainy day.

Yelp
Innsdale Hike Trail: very easy hike with some shade off and on due to some residential areas. The sign is visible right from the start so you can decide how much you really want to hike. There are plenty of great photo ops along the trail, that seem to get better as you keep going up the hill. It's somewhat marked but it can be easy to go the wrong way if you don't read up ahead of time, especially because it's necessary to go through residential areas. Then the giant gate in the one area, makes it seem like a "dead end" but in reality, there is an opening to the left of the gate. It was a relaxing hike to go on during all this COVID-19 situation. There were signs posted of social distancing and face masks being required.

Meri L.

Yelp
Had to see the Hollywood sign while visiting...I meant it's a must. You should go too! Upon driving up it's mountainy...and then you have to walk the rest of the way. You are first driving and then walking through a residential area. Just be respectful of people's property. The view is amazing. Walking up hill can be a killer in the heat, so plan your day accordingly. Besides just the view of the Hollywood sign, you can also view the beautiful city! Lots of photo ops! I highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
Instead of talking about an expensive tram up to see the backside of the sign, how about building a boardwalk BELOW the front of the sign so people can get the shot they truly want?! Charge for access, require reservations, but do not build a stupid tram. Anyhoo, the trails/fire roads are nice and all Griffith Park is nice and well kept. No matter which trail you take to get up to the sign, a LOT of people will be there will you. Be patient if you're waiting for a perfect shot, because once people have their pictures, they're not worried too much about getting out of the way so you can take yours.

Yelp
So, everyone is familiar with the Hollywood sign. Now a days it's basically a cool back drop for some selfies or photo opportunities for the family to shot that they have been to this iconic landmark. For fun and to change it up a little (some one else has probably already said this - but I'll say it again) .... here's a little history of how the Hollywood Sign came to be ....... The sign was built in 1923 and instead of the HOLLYWOOD wording of today, originally read "HOLLYWOODLAND". Its was constructed to advertise the name of a new housing development in the hills above the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. This real estate location was advertised as a "superb environment without excessive cost on the Hollywood side of the hills. They contracted the Crescent Sign Company to erect thirteen south-facing letters on the hillside. Each letter was 30 ft wide and 50 ft tall, and back in the day the sign was covered with about 4,000 light bulbs. The sign flashed in segments: "HOLLY," "WOOD," and "LAND" lit up individually, and then as a whole. Back in the day the project cost $21,000, which is equivalent to about $320,000 by todays standards. When you're in LA you should take a few minutes to stop and take a selfie.

Yelp
My experience visiting the Hollywood Sign had me going through Lake Hollywood Park. I know there are multiple ways of exploring and hiking towards this symbolic, statuesque sign. Well.....coming upon Lake Hollywood Park and navigating from there was good enough in my book. Simply....I entered "Lake Hollywood Park" into google maps and took it from there. Getting off the freeway, I turned into a residential area and then drove higher into the hills. No problem....it was an easy navigation. I kept going and eventually....I drove to a cliff area where there was parking alongside the street. I visited randomly on a weekday during the summertime. Although there were people and tourists walking around....parking was accessible. So yeah....the Hollywood Sign is in the distance. From Lake Hollywood Park.....it seemed far away. Inside the park....there was green grass and the surroundings were quiet. This Lake Hollywood Park appeared great for a picnic if anyone cares to know. But for myself, my main mission was to see the iconic Hollywood Sign in the best - closest - most feasible way possible. Lake Hollywood Park was one specific spot/location where everyone was grabbing photos. It was sort of an unimpeded little area inside the grassy park without trees or branches blocking views of sign. People were taking plenty of photos. I actually had to wait a few minutes for my turn to grab a picture. Regardless....and little did I know at that time....there would be a great deal of better opportunities to confront closer picture moments. So yeah, you have Lake Hollywood Park. What I did notice was...everyone was walking and hiking up the hill and the remainder of the road higher into what seemed like more areas to survey. I followed the herd, lol. I continued marching higher up the hill beside the road and yes! There were much more accessible photos of the Hollywood Sign as I trekked higher. Much more undisturbed moments to bask in the wondrous views of the sign. So I kept climbing and climbing..... The more I continued (or should I say casually strolled) the views only got better. Now I was able to peer down upon Lake Hollywood Park....it was quite picturesque. Also, I crossed the road and snapped scenic pictures of the Los Angeles landscape. As the road curled around and headed upwards, I finally got about as close as I could get....soaking up the backdrop as best I could. My favorite part about walking up the road/hill was....I had multiple chances to capture photos of myself and The Hollywood Sign all alone.....(without being photo-bombed by random strangers!) It was in those moments how gratifying it felt to finally check off this national landmark and symbol from my "to-do list". Eventually, as the road went....I walked into a small community. It was at this point where I couldn't maneuver any further along. There were signs indicating the area was closed to the public. So....I never made it up to the actual sign....but still this area near the sign and Lake Hollywood Park was satisfying enough. Finally, I turned around and headed back down the road. In all, I'd say I spent about 2 - 3 hours gazing up at the sign....snapping the best photos possible all the while admiring this wondrous sign that you only see in the movies, lol. For anyone who cares, I'd recommend navigating this path to the Hollywood Sign by driving to Lake Hollywood park. It was quite an uncomplicated way of "taking it all in". I know there are other paths in discovering the Hollywood Sign. When I first started researching how best to view it....I googled how....and the results led me to multiple sites that were hassle free including......... hollywoodsign.org, discoverlosangeles.com, sunsetranchhollywood.com. Any route you take, and depending upon the amount of time you can afford....you should be able to unfold what's best for your journey.

Yelp
Drove up to the Observatory and told by traffic directors to park alongside the road and trailhead begins right at corner before entering tunnel. There is a map which states distance of each trail and scenic spot. We chose the .3 miles which takes you to a nice scenic spot with clear view of the Hollywood sign. It was quite hot and sunny that day so decided not to continue to the 3 mile mark. Many roads all over to stroll, walk or run.

Yelp
Hollywood Sign is the one of the most iconic tourist sites in LA. So how can one not even do the hike to the sign when visiting LA?? Hmm I heard some don't because they fear the long hike lol I love to hike and I'll say am like an intermediate level hiker lol if that's even a thing. Anyway this hike wasn't so bad; only because we parked close enough to take pictures by the sign. Then we hiked some more to get behind the sign and that was the most thrilling part. It took us about two hours to hike and that's for roundtrip. I went with my son and my brother. My son is four years old and he did the hike; of course with some complaining along the way when we were hiking up. After we reached behind the sign he was so excited to see the view. It was definitely worth it and the hike down was a breeze. There are different areas to park and then hike. We went on a Friday and started our hike around 2PM; it was good because it wasn't super packed with tourists. It's tough to find free parking but after doing some googling and YouTubing; we found the best place to park which was at LAKE HOLLYWOOD DR. Type that on the GPS and it bring you right close to the spot where you can take clear photos in front of the sign. Then for behind the sign we were able to drive straight on that road until the dead end and park by the residential area. From there you keep walking straight and follow signs and also ask people if you feel lost to get behind the sign. People are really friendly well at least during our visit.

Yelp
When I moved to LA, one of the very first things I wanted to see was the Hollywood Sign. It is an icon of this city and one of the best ways to see it up close is at the Deronda Gate. If you're visiting LA during the weekday, getting to the Deronda Gate is a breeze. There is street parking all along Durand Drive, just a quick stroll to the pedestrian gate. If it's a weekend, you'll need to keep your car parked along Lake Hollywood Park. Then, carefully schlep 1 mile up Mulholland Drive towards Deronda Drive. Remember -- keep your eyes open for oncoming traffic since there are no sidewalks on this roughly 20 minute stroll. Once you crest the hill, you'll arrive in a quiet residential neighborhood. Keep heading up the hill. You'll see traffic cones that make it seem like the road is closed. You can ignore all this. It's simply to deter looky-loo's like us. It's completely legal to walk up here. You'll soon come to the first gate, where you'll be rewarded with an unbelievable vantage point of the Hollywood Sign. You made it! You'll likely be tempted to stop here. However, keep on going. Follow the dirt trail -- wrapping through the quiet neighborhood towards the yellow Deronda Gate. Once the trail ends, it wraps to the left where you'll find a yellow gate. In less than 2 minutes, you'll arrive at a clearing where you can find even more photo opportunities. I seriously took about 50 photos up here. In total, this hike takes about 1 to 1.5 hours with all the photo opps along the way if you're tackling it from Lake Hollywood Park. If you're visiting during a weekday, you can easily cut this down to 45 minutes since you will just be steps away from the Deronda Gate. Can't find Deronda Gate on Google Maps? No problem -- simply plug in "Mulholland Hwy and Durand Drive" on Google Maps. This will take you to the base of the hike.

Yelp
The 6.4 mile round trip hike to the Hollywood Sign was well-worth the stellar views! To get this close, I'd advise packing some high protein snacks, bottles of water, your hiking shoes and a lot of patience. My husband and I drove to 3200 Canyon Drive, parked in a lot and begin the trek at noon. *Parking warning: parking can be extremely difficult to find - especially during the weekends - You may be able to find street parking in the neighborhood below the mountain.* The trail we used was the Brush Canyon Trail and followed it all the way to the highest peak, Mt. Lee Summit which is about 1,700 feet above sea level and right behind the Hollywood sign. We took our time and at about 1:30PM, we FINALLY reached the peak, behind the Hollywood Sign. For those interested in getting a picture with the sign, the Mt. Lee summit, while being able to provide phenomenal views of LA, doesn't really provide you with an opportunity to get a picture with the sign. For that photo you'd want to take the path more traveled (just follow all the other people) to the front of the sign. Other things to note: (1) There will be a lot of people in front of the Hollywood sign trying to get pictures, but if you angle yourself the right way, you should be able to get a picture where it seems like you have it all to yourself! (2) Beware of all the horse poop on the mountain - step carefully; and (3) I consider myself to be somewhat fit and the incline going up the mountain can be daunting for any mere human, like myself, but you can do it! Don't give up!

Yelp
Lake Hollywood Blvd will take you to the park where you can get a clear view of the sign. There is a trail that leads to the closest legal location to view the sign. The best view is at sunset when the mountain lights up! For another vantage point to view the sign try Beachwood Canyon and stop by the market and cafe. You will be pleasantly surprised!

Yelp
If you take the hike to the sign be prepared with good shoes and plenty of water. Dress comfortably. This is mostly off road walking.

Yelp
The experience is worthwhile. Although the parking isn't ideal, I can understand because of the area. This is a popular trail so it's normal. I like how this hike works you out. If you want to get to the actual Hollywood sign, it will take you sometime lol But once you get there, you'll be happy you did. It is honestly somewhat of a long hike, but if you don't mind that, it's perfect. I also witnessed people horseback riding, it was pretty cool. From what I understand there's different ways to getting up there. :)

Yelp
Gotta hit up this sign when visiting LA! Parking: Find parking near the park and go early so you can snag a spot. No need to pay anywhere. Hike: There are multiple spots to take pics but I like where I took it which is about 1/3 way into the hike. Remember to follow the path that leads past the side of a house and it looks like a dead-end but you just gotta go around the bend. Overall: Just ask around for help if you need to. Be safe around and when you ask someone to take that picture do the same for them and smile on :) lol

Yelp
Beautiful sign with awesome views. Can't get to it as close as you probably liked but it's still nice to see. Lots of restricted access due to people who live there (which is understandable) :0)

Yelp
You know how you can tell you're getting old? By how much you ache once you've made it back down from Mt. Lee. Certainly worth the hike to capture an experience and view that will last a lifetime. DOOWYLLOH is so much better looking when it sits, arm's length away, on the other side of fence framing a gorgeous panoramic view of Hollywood, DTLA, the reservoir and so much more. If you do get a chance to make trek and I recommend it. Wear comfy shoes, bring lots of water and charge you phone before you head out.

Yelp
The infamous HOLLYWOOD sign is a worldwide landmark. It's a shame all Angelenos take it for granted, when millions of tourists come from all over the world to see it. I am guilty for not visiting this sign sooner. Not a fan of touristy spots so I usually avoid places of such. We drive as far up as possible and walked the trail leading to the sign from the path behind the sign as per my pictures. Hollywood reservoir and LA city views are spectacular, specially today, sunny, little to no smog it was perfect. The letters are tall and fenced a few feet to prevent dangerous slips and fall from the hill slope. However, the fence didn't deter some people here from climbing the fence and take selfies, myself included, maybe.

Yelp
Most people want the easy way. I want to struggle so I know I deserve it. Without further ado let's do this lovey review. (Brit Accent) Hollywood Sign is the most coveted landmark in LA where tourist and locals visit every day. If you want to hike to the HS, there are three routes from easy to difficult: Mt Hollywood Trail, the Brush Canyon Trail and the Cahuenga Peak Trail. Today, I hiked the Brush Canyon Trail, it's considered a moderate trail by hikers. The BCT, part of Griffith Park, is a 6.5 mile (out and back) trail to the Sign climbs over 1,000 feet with very little to no tree shades. The trail starts at the end of Canyon Drive which can be accessed from Franklin Avenue. Furthermore, the trail is wide enough to offer you sensational views of the city. This trail is well kept with trash cans at regular intervals. However, one thing that annoyed me was the horse shit on some section of the trail. BCT is dog friendly as long as they're on leash. Free Parking (lots A & B) are available albeit limited. I will end this review with a hiking tip: bring plenty of water, a hat and SPF50 sunscreen. Overall, I enjoyed my hike and the city views it offered. I highly recommend this trail.
