A Global Tour of Bakeries With Fascinating Histories

"If you don’t live in Staten Island, or have a car, it’s tough to get to Holtermann’s Bakery. Most trekkers begin with a trip on the ferry, followed by a one-hour bus ride. But such is the price of traveling back in time. Holtermann’s, in operation since 1878, is committed to preserving the art of several retro baked goods.  Much about the bakery, from its warehouse-like stacking of its white-and-blue crumb cake boxes to its Pullman bread (so named because its perfect rectangular shape led to easy stacking and storage on Pullman train cars in late 1800s), feels like it hails from a simpler time. But Holtermann’s most beautiful throwback treat is the Charlotte Russe, a jam-filled mini sponge cake topped with a swirl of whipped cream and a single cherry. The single-serving sweet comes wrapped in a polka-dotted, scalloped container. The Charlotte Russe has its roots in France, where a famous chef is said to have served a ladyfinger-lined, cream-filled cake to a visiting Russian (i.e., Russe) czar. (Another theory suggests the Russe was added as a reference to the a la Russe style of guests serving themselves at dinners.) The New York City adaptation became popular in the early 1900s, but by the century’s end, it was all but extinct. Holtermann’s is one of the last places still selling the real deal. To those accustomed with the high-octane decadence of modern desserts, the Charlotte’s simple tuft of whipped cream atop a sliver of sponge cake might not seem like much. But to some nostalgic city-dwelling seniors, it remains a delicious treasure." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The first time I came here was to show my support bc of the whole Whoopi controversary. I felt like I was 10 years old again, standing in my old neighborhood bakery and the only thing missing was the string. I purchased two shopping bags full of pastries and pies and of course had to try the charlotte russe.. WOW! Everything was fresh and amazing, even days later which is the true test of quality. Well, I was sitting in traffic on my way home to Long Island during the July 4th weekend and thought how wonderful it would be to enjoying some Holtermann's during my ride, so I stopped by again. This time I got two of everything I love; charlotte russe, lemon flips, jelly donuts, linzer tarts, assorted fruit danishes, a whoppie pie and a coffee. Again, WOW! This place is amazing and the staff is so friendly. I will be going back again and again.

Google
Holtermann's Bakery is indeed a Staten Island treasure! It's amazing to think that this bakery has been serving the community for over 145 years. It's a place where history meets deliciousness, and it's definitely worth a visit if you're ever in the area.

Google
Amazing old school bakery. Haven’t been here in probably 30 years but as good today as I remember it being.

Tony D'Antonio

Google
Iconic old-school family-run bakery. Even their sugar-free cookies are delicious.

Google
Fantastic local bakery! The donuts, bagels, cakes, and pies are all excellent. I've been told they have the best croissant. The Charlotte Russe was great. You're even allowed to get it if you're a Democrat.

Dan S.

Yelp
Been craving to try your product ever since that good ball Whoopi deal....she a mess. Friend shipped me some dougnuts...wish lived close! Delicious....keep it up!

Bill L.

Yelp
It's hit or miss with their products. We've had some good stuff from them. But we picked up an already-made cake today, and it was very stale. My sister told me that she experienced stale products from them before.

Yelp
Huge selection, family owned team very helpful and everything is always delicious, Great prices, have to try the pickles

Alma P.

Yelp
I just moved to SI and discovered this bakery. Everyone is friendly and everyone I go there, there is some new addition to their inventory. What I've had here so far is delicious. Very clean and nice staff

JoAnn F.

Yelp
Delicious baked goods enjoy all of it friendly service and nice store much to choose from

Steve G.

Yelp
Wry nice staff. The cheese cake was delicious. I would definitely purchase again. It was a cream cheese cake.

Chris D.

Yelp
Always fresh. Always delicious. Great service. Have been going to Holterman's for years and will continue to go weekly!

Yelp
There's some hype surrounding this bakery so we figured we'd check it out. Got some french bread, lemon flip, croissant a donut and coffee. The French bread is absolutely delicious. Crispy crust and airy on the inside. My lemon flip was good also, not overly sweet. My husband enjoyed his donut and felt like the croissant was average. He enjoyed his coffee also. A line forms quick here but staff were quick and friendly. Wouldn't make a special trip again, but would come back if we're in the area.

Cynthiab K.

Yelp
I love this bakery. Smells so wonderful when you walk in the door. I want one of everything. Everything made with old world charm.

Bill B.

Yelp
Wow as remembered. When I was younger the Holtermann's truck would come down our block and have the cupcakes, crumb cakes & awesome pastries. Went Sunday morning ended up getting all the usual favorites plus the famous Charolette Russe. Everyone was ultra kind and very knowledgeable on all their baked goods. Cupcakes were as remembered, raspberry danish was a hit as was the coffee crumb cake. Oh and their sourdough bread is excellent!!

Jimmy B.

Yelp
This is a family owned bakery in Staten Island. Do you want a place with amazing cakes, cookies, and other pastries? Then come right in The Crumb Cakes are to die for! So flavorful

Charisse S.

Yelp
Love their walnut and danish rings! My daughter can't get enough of their cupcakes. Staple here in Staten Islands

Yelp
I have passed by this bakery so many times and wanted to give them a try. They have a many pastry options it was truly hard to decide. I got chocolate cupcakes and they were so delicious and fresh. I also bought a vanilla sponge with chocolate icing for a gathering and can't wait to try it. I will for sure return for more items. The space is not too big but everything is baked in-house.

Yelp
Holtermann's bakery is a Staten Island legacy! If I had a dollar for every time my mother speaks about the fresh bread delivered weekly- I would have a lot of dough ! Stopped in for some Super Bowl Sunday goodies to share with my friends. The display case was filled with donuts, pastries and chocolate covered anything !! Among the baked goods was a football shaped moose cake and cute cupcakes football decorations on top. I also found hot chocolate bombs and some Valentine's Day sweats for your sweetheart ! Don't forget the bread- I had to grab some thinly sliced Viking bread- a delicious old school recipe of hearty cracked wheat and other whole grains, perfect for toast! L
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
Came Sunday morning was pretty busy but mine did move quickly. We got jelly donut and glazed donuts. Peach pie and apple, raspberry and cheese bun. The donuts were so soft and fresh, I would definitely go back for just the donuts. The peach pie was disappointing they use canned peaches (maybe because peaches are not in season) not sure. The apple, raspberry and cheese buns were ok, don't think I'll get them again. They do have other stuff as well like cookies, cupcakes and bread. Overall nice little place.
google avatar

Ting Z.

Yelp
They only allow 4 customers in the store at once due to COVID so be warned there may be a bit of a wait. Staff seemed a bit frazzled but were still helpful and willing to offer recommendations. Baked goods were all around pretty solid. Had the jelly donuts, apple pie, and strawberry cupcakes. Honestly I think my favorite part was less the baked goods themselves and more the frosting/jelly haha (I'm pretty picky when it comes to frosting but the frosting here was really light and smooth).
google avatar

Nathalia N.

Yelp
This was my first time ordering from this place, as it was recommended by a friend. I have only tried their cupcake, basic vanilla with butter créeme, typical and nothing out of this world. The cupcakes were not dry and the frosting was perfectly swirled. The customer service is outstanding. I asked them to insert the cupcakes in doomes and cupcake holders a day before picking them up, and they didn't object. I dropped them off and done. Can't wait to try actual stuff from bakery, like their chocolate chip tea biscuit.

Emily S.

Yelp
I have always loved this place, I used to buy their bagels and bread every week. Bought a loaf of raisin bread yesterday that I brought home and found green mold on, only after I started eating. Disgusting.
google avatar

Kirsten S.

Yelp
Hotlermans has been around for eons but I never new this was a anything but an old abandoned bakery. I don't recall ever seeing a sign that says Holtermann's or Open. My family asked me to pick up a Kringle for Christmas. Apparently not only are they still in business but famous for their Kringle. I preordered it the day before and picked it up Christmas Eve. It clearly has a quiet following since it was packed yet I'd never heard of it. I also tried a Strufala, which are so beloved to Staten Island Italians I figured it must be great. Blek blah uck, not my thing. I was told by the person we gave the Kringle to that is was great. So I'd stick to what they are famous for. It's a very small but has ample hours. They were also very pleasant. I would definitely recommend Hotlermanns
google avatar

Lexi S.

Yelp
My favorite here is the Charlotte russe (: love the history behind it. Best place to go if you're ever in the area. My aunt lives here so it's always a tradition to get this treat.
google avatar

Edgar C.

Yelp
This bakery is one of the best bakeries i've ever gone to. They have almost every single classic bakery item you have ever heard of and some surprising, unique options alongside them. Aside from their awesome seasonal items, they also have a Charlotte Russe that is considered a staple there. I have never heard of this item until i visited Holtermanns bakery and it is one of the tastiest things they have. They also have really great cheese danishes! :)
google avatar

Charles R.

Yelp
I went today on Sunday and had the Blueberry Muffin Very yummy I will return again and again and again
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Not sure what I was thinking with my previous review but I visited this place recently and was quite pleased. I went ahead and had the jelly donut and a fudge brownie and both tasted great. Freshness wasn't an issue and the service here is great. There is a family vibe here that's been going on for a long time now. The prices are good too! I look forward to trying this place out again!
google avatar

Gabrielle B.

Yelp
I've been going to Holtermans for years for their sugar free cookies for my father and for their charolette russes. They are my absolute favorite dessert!!
google avatar

Anton T.

Yelp
Long time family owned bakery with it's own products. I come here for the bread and the sweets, my favorite being the Cheese Horn cake, made with a delicious baker's cheese. A lot of Bavarian influenced pastries available here that are not as common as Italian pastries on Staten Island. I love how their products are not that sweet, from their cookies to their muffins, to their cakes and tarts. They are not overpowered with sugar. A lot of the products are made with simple brown sugar and dextrose and not all their products are laden with syrups or artificial flavors. And did I mention their bread? Their Italian bread is very good, not too rubbery, and nice and light and airy.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
My favorite bakery on Staten Island, I've been going since I was a little girl. Items that I must get every time I go are: blueberry flips, a jelly donut, and a charlotte russe. If you haven't heard of a charlotte russe, this is the only place you should try one from--and the only place within a 100 miles that makes them

Joe D.

Yelp
Donuts are fresh and tasty and most cakes however bagels corn Toasties tea biscuits and cupcakes were stale third time I experienced this will never buy those items again from Holtermann's buyer beware
google avatar

Jaynee G.

Yelp
Love this bakery !! Everything we've bought and tried were amazing ! The prices are great The cakes are fresh The flips (mini apple and pineapple pies are incredible. The staff is very friendly all the time Which that in itself is a rarity !! Thank you Holtermann's you outshine all other bakeries on Staten Island

Yelp
I've lived on Staten Island for several decades and never really paid any attention to this place. I drive by it several times and on a whim decided to stop in (you know, YOLO and all that). The bakery is located on an enormous plot of land which led me to believe the inside would be just as sprawling. Uh, no. The inside of the bakery is like walking into a dive bar. Small, damp, poorly lit. I think my bedroom is larger than the storefront of this bakery. I did appreciate the friendly welcome from the ladies behind the counter as I perused the sweet-smelling delicacies somewhat haphazardly laid out before me. Their selection leaves a lot to be desired with one-two-three varieties of bread. I chuckled as to the poor selection of sweets and other "baked goods" - I ordered a chocolate and cinnamon twist and left. On my ride home, I decided to try the chocolate twist and I'm sorry I did, it was gross. Too sweet and the chocolate was, well, not chocolate. The cinnamon twist I had later with a cup of tea was the only reason why this review is 3/5 and not 1/5. It was pure heaven!
google avatar

Sally N.

Yelp
Stop by this lovely family run bakery again. I swear every time I came out of this place, it injects some positive energy to my day. The ladies behind the counter were so sweet to me and my little trouble maker daughter. I later found out they are probably the owners (daughter and mother). We got a box of classic chocolate chips Cookie, two donuts and a loaf of raisin bread. Everything taste like homemade and in my opinion the way it should me. That means u better eat them while they are fresh, cause they will grt moldy or harden if not. These stores are the once that my family will support and can trust. Hopefully they will continue their business for another 100 plus years

Julius N.

Yelp
The worst f***** cake. I bought a cake for my wife for Mother's Day. Never again. It was super dry and the frosting was hard. I normally never go to bakeries but this is the time you need to step it up and put your best foot forward. My wife told me to go to Sal's Bakery. Since I live near this one I said why not. OMG WHAT A MISTAKE. MY KIDS HATED IT MY WIFE DIDN'T GO NEAR IT. THE CAKE WENT RIGHT INTO THE GARBAGE. Totally disappointed. NEVER AGAIN.
google avatar

Ekamsat9 ..

Yelp
I wish I could give this place more stars. Everything and I mean everything is delicious and deceptively so. The items all look rather ordinary but when you taste them you will be amazed. Must be the over one hundred year old Starter that they use. The best jelly and Boston cream droughts anywhere and I have had them many places but that's just a drop in the bucket of goodies offered. The price is so cheap. It's crazy. The only place I can recommend to cross the bridge into Staten Island as a foodie destination.
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
Saw this place from the road and had a feeling it would be good. I was right. Imagine what the original Entenmann's might have looked like in the 1960s. Cute sales girls too (Staten Island is closer to Jersey Shore than NYC). I couldn't leave without buying a box of raisin sugar buns and a mini crumb cake. The sugar buns were excellent - soft and moist, flavorful, good amount of raisins. Crumb cake was good, but not spectacular. I live in Manhattan, so not sure when I'll be back, but I'll try.
google avatar

Kate V.

Yelp
Great bakery. They've stayed consistently good for years and years. Best are the grab and go strawberry vanilla and chocolate cupcakes. But also love their old fashioned cakes like the crumb cake or strawberry shortcakes. Cookies are good, fresh breads .. great place.
google avatar

Cory R.

Yelp
Always fresh! Always good! No one is ever dissatisfied!! I recommend everything! The staff is always friendly as well!
google avatar

Joseph H.

Yelp
This Staten Island bakery is not only one of the oldest in the city, its one the best. The store is spotless, and the staff couldn't be nicer. Under no circumstances leave this store without getting a jelly donut. It's fabulous, and the best I ever had. Worth the sin .

Vanessa L.

Yelp
Fave bakery on the island! Never disappointed when I come here. It's a nice change from all of the Italian bakeries on the island.(Not that i don't love those too!!) However this has more of a homemade taste, and no way can you beat the price!! The staff is great too, very friendly and always accommodating. ***The powdered jelly donuts are the best I've ever had and I have to get at least one mini eclair whenever I stop in.**
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Hands down best bakery on the island! It's almost a curse that I live right so close to it lol but I also get they're sugar buns or cinnamon rolls. They're jelly donuts are the absolute best and the cookies are delicious. My daughter and I love getting the Sesame Street cupcakes too. The whipped cream topping melts in your mouth.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
I came here to get the Charlotte Russe dessert for my boss. This is a dessert he used to have as a kid, he's 57 now. It's pretty much a little paper cup of whipped cream. There is a tiny round disc of cake and a smidgen of jam/fruit of top of that. The rest? JUST 4 INCHES OF WHIPPED CREAM. This costs $2.25? Nope, not again. I'm sure the other items are good, so don't say NO completely, this experience was just a little bit of a bummer.

Hunny M.

Yelp
I've passed this non descript building hundreds of times during the nearly 2 decades I've lived in this neighborhood! I always knew it was there, but never had occasion to pop inside until a colleague turned me on to their products. This place is a gem hiding in plain sight. I kick myself for missing out all those years, but i'm a regular customer now. Everything is fresh & the staff is friendly & helpful.
google avatar

Claire D.

Yelp
Great rolls, excellent pastries! Not a fan of the boxed cupcakes as I find them to have a peculiar taste. However, the cupcakes in the display case taste just fine although I have had better red velvet cupcakes. I never leave here without a package of Toll House cookies. There is usually a line here on the weekends but it moves quickly.
google avatar

Thomas A.

Yelp
This bakery is the best! Their pies and cakes are fresh and have no preservatives, witch means they are better for you and the service has a friendly environment. Their apple pie is my favorite, served warm with some vanilla ice cream on top. ;)
google avatar

Seychelle O.

Yelp
The baked goods are always fresh I truly love everything about this mom and pop place. My favorite is the apple pie
google avatar

Hungry K.

Yelp
Uninviting decor. The general store on little house on the prairie looked more inviting. Sparse and old. Displays do not look appealing. I tried the Charlotte Russe One of the few places that makes these. It was very good. Otherwise why would I go back? Thank goodness for food magazines that make the bs go around. People that work there are very nice. WIGB? No
google avatar

Angela A.

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood bakery. The chocolate sticks and sourdough bread (round one) are to die for. Nothing fancy here, all delicious, old fashioned and home made.

Jodi M.

Yelp
Visited here after many years (I moved out of state and recently returned to the island). I adored holtermanns in the 70's and 80's and was pleasantly surprised to find that their quality is the same! Love love love their Jelly donuts. Screw Dunkin' Donuts, if you think their donuts are good, you don't know what you're missing!!! This place is a gem!
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
So far I've had a jelly donut and crumb cake cheese Danish. Both freakin fantastic! I will say though, that 5th star would be there if the jelly donut had more jelly. (if you've ever had a jelly donut from Long Beach Island, you'd know what I'm talking about!)

James F.

Yelp
I like this place. They always have a great and sometimes different selection. Old school German bakery. The only thing I wish is that they would use a little bit less of those bug buckets of sweeteners and such. Love the crumb buns and all of their cakes.

D D.

Yelp
Worst cupcakes I ever had. Purchased in Dick's Deli. Absolutely tasteless and dry. Threw them out.
