On the Grid : Holthusenbad

"Sometimes the weather in Hamburg can be a little bit rough. So why not try a relaxing day in a Spa which is one of the oldest baths in Germany." - Tom Schuster

We enjoy this pool for our 5 year old and 2 year old. The wave pool was fun and reasonable for even kids that young be just staying in the back. There is a kiddy area that was relaxing while we waited for the next round I the wave pool. One challenge is that the floor is very slippery and even I almost fell though I was going slow and being very careful. I saw at least 2 kids fall the last time was was there, but thankfully they just laughed it off. We will still continue coming there and we use a 1 1/2 hours ticket and feel that’s working for us if we don’t dilly dally. Staying for longer is also not that much more rewarding. Rather come more often ;)

We had a very bad experience here. The restrooms were very dirty. They haven’t been cleaned for a while…. There were food on the floor next to the tables just near the pools ! It’s not possible !

Want a relaxing experience in a thermal spa? Then don't come here. It's full of kids. Even half of the thermal pool was closed off for a baby class. The other half was full of kids splashing and screaming. Parents looking exhausted in the few jacuzzi seats. If you have kids, it's a great place. But my problem is that The staff member could have at least mentioned to us that half the thermal pool is closed... Not very considerate of him to let us pay full price for half a service

Great Sunday afternoon chilling at those terms. You have 2 parts: thermal baths, with a big pool at 34° and a small one at 38°, and a sauna part with a lot of different rooms. Take the ticket for both, it's really worth it (~10e for the baths, ~20e for both). You can experience saunas ranging from 45° to 100°, with aromas (eucalyptus, essential oils, etc), and a different theme for each (theatre, coffee house, etc.) You also have cold baths to freeze you up after, some outside terrace to take some fresh hair, and even ice buckets. We stayed 4h, but you could even stay a whole day without being bored. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
You know, this facility is fantastic, no doubt about it. There are multiple rooms with all kinds of different steaming & heating & bathing options, some of them pretty surreal, but all in top form. The pool was packed out with parents & toddlers doing swim class the whole time I was there, so I didn't get to swim, unfortunately. But listen, here's the deal. There's definitely a 'bath culture' in effect in Germany, & people bring a big rucksack of stuff like bathrobes, extra hand towels for sitting on, fancy sandals, etc. I showed up with just a regular towel & swimtrunks & it was clear I didn't know what was up. Also it slowly dawned on me that I represented the sum total of body hair & tattoos in the entire building, & after only chill positive experiences at spa & bath facilities on the West Coast, clothed & otherwise, I started to catch some serious hateful vibes from the well-heeled Germans around me, culminating in this one couple making a huge production of washing off the bench where I'd just been sitting. At that point I left, & wandered off premises into this ridiculous shopping district for affluent white people, & suddenly it all made sense. So in short, if you're the right kind of person, this place will be great. Also it might be helpful to know that they don't accept Visa. CR

Yelp
Edit: The price has risen by about 2eu (7.70 for 1.5h) and the "private dressing compartments" have been designated to be diaper change rooms. I'm not even nearly as squeamish about the "European-random-naked-people-thing" anymore, so that's not much of a worry. ---------- Original review: I admit - I'm biased towards this place since I effectively used it as my bath/shower for a period of two weeks last Winter when our household heating system broke down. But it's a better excuse than any! Holthusen-Bad (or Kellinghusen-Bad) is one of my favorite places to relax. I love swimming during all seasons and Holthusen-Bad offers a nice, affordable range of selections for swimmers and loungers of all persuasions. They have a large heated pool, a wave pool, an outdoor pool and a super-heated mini-pool for relaxing. It costs about 6eu for an hour and a half. I like that they offer private dressing compartments, which is not something all European spas actually have. If you're not into the European-random-naked-people-thing, Holthusen-Bad offers small compartments in the dressing area. Classy!

Yelp
my fav. place to go out with my son. in addition to swimming pool, the bistro here is quite nice. their french fries and other fried food are not oily or salty. they also have 3 kinds of alcohol-free beer.
