"A famous shrine to the Virgin Mary established in Chora in 1823, with a grand Orthodox church swagged in red satin like an Edwardian wedding cake. Pilgrims come to be healed, often literally crawling from the ferry along a carpet that lines the path to the church."

Not our faith but interesting all the same, respect rules apply with regards dress, so cover up shoulders and knees and take hats off. There's carpet from the front all the way up to allow pilgrims to crawl the last bit of the journey out of ritual. There were a number of different ceremonies on while we visited, all interesting to see and totally foreign to us! Enjoyable visit

Quite an interesting church in the center of Tinos. It was built in 1823 on the site where the miraculous icon of Virgin was found. Note to bring/buy a bottle from the near shops and fill it with the holy water found on the GF.

I am not at all religious, but this place is very impressive regardless. If you are visiting Tinos, it is definitely worth a visit. We even saw quite a few of the more religiously inclined, crawling on all fours, up to entrance.

Tinos is an overlooked island, although it is right before Mikonos when you get on the ferry. Welcoming, with delicious food. You will be surprise by the beauty of this island. There is a lot to see here of course stay away from the port area to experience the authentic Tinos hospitality. The church of miracles in Chora ( Pilgrimage destination) the capital of Tinos is a must visit near the port. We stayed in this lovely picturesque village called Dyo Choria and our gorgeous hosts were absolutely the best. Check out some of the sandy beaches, head to Pegu beach a long stretch sandy beach with a lively mix of people, families and non families.

Note: Purchase plastic bottles (for holy water), prayer ropes, tamata (small, thin metal "offerings") and tall candles at any of the stores leading up to the monastery. These items are NOT sold on site. You can bless your prayer ropes by pressing/sliding them against the icon three times in the form of the cross Ask the person working at the candle stand (inside the big church) for a booklet holy oil. This is where you will drop off your big candle and tama (metal offering). We went first week of October and there were NO lines. The people at the little stores were very helpful in explaining some of this stuff to me, so definitely ask them questions. It's about a 20 minute walk from port.
