On the Grid : Ghost Church

"One day exploring the neighborhood, I happened upon a local ruin. The facade of an old church caught my eye because something was not normal. Light was pouring through the windows and doors. Turned out it was just a facade and all else had been excavated. A little research revealed the Podmajersky company that started rehabbing old buildings as artist lofts years ago, created this destination within the blocks of Pilsen for everyone. They "saved" the Evangelical Lutheran church at at 19th and Peoria by stripping it of its stained glass windows, altar, pews, and back and side walls leaving only its facade and spirit. It is lovely and works every bit like a church should." - Faust

Interesting to read that having a dress code for the biggest celebration on this planet has people surprised. We are invited to participate in Eucharist and chose to dress up in shorts, sweat pants, pajamas. Is this how we would dress up for a wedding, anniversary party or any other big celebration? The way we dress shows respect and adoration for a Holy Sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. Pastors responsibility is to lead its flock to our Heavenly Father not a popularity contest. God brought us Ft Marek for a reason and we pray for his quick recovery and return to our parish.

Fr. Marek is the absolute best pastor that Holy Ghost Parish has ever had. I have been a parishioner for over 35 years, He truly cares about every parishioner’s spiritual growth and bringing them closer to our Lord. I thank Jesus for him every day.

It's so nice to see a pastor who is not afraid to speak the truth and truly look out for the salvation of his flock. He shows reverence to Our Lord, follows church teaching, and speaks to those who are seeking to grow in their faith and their love of Christ. A great parish for those seeking a reverent mass.

Unfortunately, we were taken advantage of financially during a very difficult and extremely unexpected loss for our family, and the services of the Holy Ghost Parish which we were promised (such as sharing the details of the life and extraordinary character of our loved one) were not executed, and Fr. Marek never even spoke to our family directly about the loss. We were even planning on inviting him to our celebration of life luncheon afterward, but we felt the service and interactions were cold, dismissive, and very difficult to understand throughout. My family recommends you go to a different parish for this important ceremony for your loved ones, and please read some of the poorly-starred reviews below before making any commitments here. What I will say is that we really enjoyed our initial meeting- and felt comfortable discussing logistics with —Fran, but everything that followed did not meet our expectations. The worst part is the Bishop and Parish refused any type of compensation- not monetarily, nothing— for delivering a subpar product and service.

Don’t let some of these lukewarm charismatics let you down with these reviews, This new Pastor is a reverent considerate Catholic Priest who looks out for his congregation and tries to get them to heaven. Not everything is sunshine and rainbows people, going to heaven isn’t an easy route and we must fight against satan through our Lord in the Eucharist and attending mass.

Didn’t go to a church for many years, but after coming to Holy Ghost me and my family felt very comfortable and now this is our church.

This used to be a good church; it is no longer. In July 2024 pastor Fr John Hornicak was reassigned by the Diocese of Joliet and replaced with Fr Marek Herbut, (a Polish priest from rural Poland) who thinks television watching is a sin and that men and women shud wear business attire (long dresses and suit and ties) to mass each week. I am worried about the future of this parish. Fr Marek thinks everything is a sin. Perhaps this priest needs confession more than his congregation. Pray that the bishop replaces him soon.

Good church, warm welcome. The priest's homilies are pretty well thought out and he comes off well versed in getting to the meat of the readings and portraying the messages in a context that's very relatable. The congregation seems nice, but, since I'm shy, I keep to myself. They did a nice job with the nativity for Christmas, blessing it, then explaining its true importance and significance beyond the obvious birth of Christ.

A church of love and beauty. I'm so thankful that my best friend shared Holy Ghost Church with us!
