The Abandoned Amusement Park Great American Road Trip

"In the early 1950s John Baptist Greco, a staunch Roman Catholic, had a vision of a roadside theme park devoted to God. By the end of the decade, he had created exactly that: a theme park built to replicate a miniature Bethlehem. By the 1960s, the park was visited by some 50,000 people a year. One could come and see a recreation of the Garden of Eden, biblical-themed dioramas and various tributes to the life and work of Jesus Christ. The park was perhaps best known for its Hollywood-style sign reading “Holy Land USA” and its 56-foot steel cross that can be seen for miles, especially when lit up at night. It is said that there is a town joke that citizens grow up thinking Jesus was electrocuted on the cross. In 1984, the park was closed for renovation. Greco had hopes of expanding the site to attract more visitors; however, this was never achieved as he died in 1986. Responsibility for the park passed to a group of nuns. For a while, they tried to keep the park clean and neat looking but never opened to the public. Regardless of their efforts, the park became seedy and vandalized since Greco’s death. Until 2014 the nuns own the property, however, it is the local teenagers and foragers who have made their mark. Statues have been beheaded, dioramas destroyed, and tunnels blocked.  While much of the park remains, in recent years it has become dangerous and was the site of a murder of a young woman in 2010. Update May 2018: Holy land has been undergoing a refurbishing by the Mayor, Neil M. O’Leary and volunteers who have been working to get it opened possibly by the end of 2018. The old cross has been removed and a larger cross that is let up at night-sometimes with different colors reflecting a religious day or holiday. Update as of December 2020:  The park has been extensively cleaned up and items rebuilt but volunteers. While it is not yet open to the public, visitors are welcome to park near the gate and walk around Holy Land during daylight hours. No trespassing is strictly enforced after sunset." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Its cool for sure but in a not so nice neighborhood and has a bad reputation for violence happening on the property. Its open to walking around during the day and even then its a bit sketchy. But it is cool to check out at least once! Has great view of the city and the little buildings are cool, they have been mostly destroyed over the years by vandalism but still cool.

I've wanted to visit this place forever, we finally went! First off- these are NOT buildings you can explore in...unless your an American Girl doll 🤣 (photo op!) I was exploring with my kids and just WISHED I lived closer, because this place just needs a few weeks of hard gardening and some plaster work and it could be amazing! I had SO many ideas for this area-seating areas, building reconstruction, etc. Fixing the Sphinx would be so easy, it just needs someone with that talent. We enjoyed walking up the paths to the hilltop, and spent some time replanting the flowers that someone pulled out of the planters. We really saw the vision that was originally here. I hope they get an influx of funding because it would be an amazing place restored!

I remember visiting here as a kid in the 80’s and it was run down then, so it’s somewhat amazing, sad, and heartwarming to find it still existing in a state of ruin decades later. I suppose it comes across as a kitschy amusement these days, but it was once a labor or love and an outsized vision. Worth the trek, and try to keep an open heart as you wander around.

It's kind of a weird Quirky place. Christian relics lost in the weeds and brush.. but it was a adventure.

I enjoyed Holy Land USA. The site is in a semi-ruined / stabilized state. However, most of the Stations of the Cross were visible. The Mt. Calvary Crosses and Large, Main Cross, were interesting. The views of Waterbury were also great

Holyland USA in Waterbury, CT, a place that has always held a special fascination for me, has undergone a significant transformation. While it once stood as a dilapidated space, it has been restored to some extent, shedding its worn-down appearance. One of the most notable changes is the addition of a new lit cross, which continues to glow high above downtown Waterbury, serving as an iconic beacon. Additionally, the removal of overgrown brush and trees has opened up the space, revealing its hidden beauty. Having visited Holyland USA at various stages of my life, I've witnessed its evolution firsthand. Each visit offers a unique perspective, and I'm continually amazed by its enduring charm and significance. Whether you're drawn to its religious symbolism or simply intrigued by its history, Holyland USA is a place that invites exploration and contemplation. It's a testament to the power of restoration and the enduring allure of this iconic landmark. -Marisa Balletti-Lavoie

Google
What an unusual piece of Americana. Apparently this was a big tourist draw in the 1950s and 60s. It tells the story of Jesus's life through architecture. It was closed in the 80s and reopened in 2019 but I don't think anything was done to update it. Currently it's an interesting relic of a bygone age. If you are interested in this sort of thing we found it highly interesting to walk through. Nature is reclaiming this museum and that adds value to the visit. In addition it has great views of Waterbury from the top.

Very cool place to spend a while walking around. It's a bit small, but has really interesting partially-delapidated structures. Also offers a great view of the surrounding area from the top of the hill.
