My Big Fat Greek Festival: The St. John's Festival on Ios
"At the festival of St. John at the mountain monastery I arrived along a tiny, winding track in the dark and was led into the monastery's back garden where Greek women were cleaning large bowls and huge pots were heating soup and wild goat; I was handed a bowl with thick, rice-porridge-like soup and tender chunks of wild goat that fell off the bone and tasted a lot like lamb. Thick, obviously homemade bread soaked up the hot soup, then came wine and bread and different cheeses “from Ios,” including a soft goat cheese an old man gave me that was among the milkiest and smoothest I’ve ever had. I sat at a table of inquisitive, cigarette-smoking old Greek men while a small grandmother in a black shawl watched me clean my plate, later catching a few traditional dances (and some locals inventing moves) as the band played; people now stay until around midnight before driving back to town, though in the old days they would have taken donkeys up to the monastery to stay the night. It was the most cultural Greek thing I’d done in my three trips to Greece." - Matthew Kepnes
A beautiful monastery that resembles a fortified castle with extremely high walls. It is said that John the beloved disciple of Jesus wrote the book of Revelation in the nearby cave. The monastery has a priceless museum that houses ancient books, manuscripts and a vast array of religious artifacts, icons and religious relics.

Visited this monastery alongside the Holy Cave of the Apocalypse on Patmos island. I was impressed with all the frescos on the walls and artifacts on display in the museum. A great place to visit.

Plenty of energy spent walking up and down hilly roads, as the roads are limited to a small amount of traffic. The monastery is quite small so only a small amount of people can enter at once, be respectful, well worth a visit, sadly no photos allowed inside.

Took a cab from the stand in Skala, 8e to the top. Monestary was almost empty (unlike the cave nearby that had cruise boat patrons), so getting to see everything was a breeze. Amazing views, very interesting museum, nice caretakers inside the facility. Maranatha!

This was part of a half day tour. The views are beautiful. Church is beautiful. You have an opportunity to light a candle and say a prayer. You will need to get the candle when exiting the church and there is an area to light and say a prayer behind you after exiting. Lots of history. We did with a guide and she kept us informed of the history and such.

A truly unforgettable experience. The Monastery of St. John the Theologian on Patmos is a place of immense spiritual and historical significance. The fortress-like exterior is impressive, but it's the serene atmosphere inside that truly captivates you. The panoramic views of the island from the top are simply breathtaking. A visit here is a must for anyone interested in history, art, or spirituality.

Such a holy place....to visit where John was when he received the vision and words for Revelation.
