Holy Monastery of Saint Stephen

A peaceful and beautifully designed monastery that truly feels like a home rather than a monument. The courtyard was especially charming, with its warm, lived-in atmosphere and thoughtful details that make you want to slow down and stay a while. Walking through the stone paths and wooden balconies felt intimate and serene, almost like stepping into a quiet village house. There is also a lovely little gift shop where the monks sell their own packaged herbal teas and natural healing creams. Don’t forget to stop by before you leave, it’s a special and authentic touch that makes the visit even more memorable.

Beautiful and sacred monastery to visit. The interior is absolutely stunning and very well maintained. A must-visit if you’re interested in Byzantine architecture and temples. The nuns are incredibly friendly, supportive, and informative. I was greeted by Sister Stefania upon entering, who kindly spent so much time with me, explaining the history of the monastery, the saint to whom it is dedicated, and going out of her way to be kind and welcoming. I loved visiting and certainly want to return to learn even more. (Adding a few photos of monasteries I took. No specifically the one of Saint Stephen’s)

I feel this monastery is the easiest to navigate with people that have mobility concerns. It is absolutely stunning and the views are breathtaking. Keep in mind that because of the ease of access means that it can be busy. Like all the other 6 monasteries there is a dress requirement, although it probably was the most lax that I saw. They do have wraps for the women to wrap around (see photo).

Nice monastery, entrance is free, there is guided tour available, very interesting and unique wall paintings, the outdoor space is lovely and most probably you will find two cats chilling around! 🌿😺

Beautiful view at top. Lots of stairs to get up to top. Certainly small monastery. There was construction being done - there was only a tiny cathedral and museum that you can go to

St. Stephen’s Nunnery is a beautiful and peaceful monastery in Meteora. It’s the easiest to access, with a small bridge instead of steep steps, making it ideal for visitors of all ages. Inside, you’ll find stunning frescoes, a serene atmosphere, and a deep sense of history. The views from the terrace are breathtaking, stretching across the valley and the distant peaks. A truly special place that leaves you feeling calm and inspired long after you leave.

The surroundings are immaculate, and the sense of spirituality and history is deeply felt. A must-visit location offering both cultural and spiritual enrichment.

The Holy Monastery of Saint Stephen is one of the only two nun monasteries in Meteora, and it’s also one of the easiest to reach since it doesn’t require climbing many steps. There are small stalls outside selling souvenirs. We didn’t go inside due to time, but even viewing it from afar gives a sense of grandeur and serenity.
