The Best Places to Eat in 2026 | Condé Nast Traveler

"Steps from Patan Durbar Square, this third-generation, hole-in-the-wall Newari institution fries green-and-black dal bara on a cast-iron tava—the sizzle and crackle as evocative as the taste." - Megan Spurrell, Arati Menon

We had heard of all the great reviews so wanted to come here to check this place out for ourselves. Everything was great! The atmosphere was still authentic even though it’s quite popular now, the prices were good, food was fresh and hot. Overall great place. Check out our channel for a full review of our experience: Hungry Two Travel.

A local Newari Cusine dish nested just behind Krishna Mandir Patan, Popular among most locals for it's Newari food . Seating places available both on ground and upper deck. The waitresses was spot on memorising all my orders and cross checking it at the counter. The main master chef was sitting at the entrance making the famous Baras and reheating the orders.....You get mostly everything from bara, jibro, bhutton, chowela, phosko, buff jhol, aloo, achar, t syoo, bhudi, giddi , chicken items ... Tama aloo .... And I tasted most of them.... I ordered for home pack but it was packed in such a way that even I reached home after an hour the bara rest of the food was warm enough to eat.... The chowela was piro for me and some pieces were hard and chewy but the jibro fry was my favourite .. giddi and bhutton was really good. Well for an overall experience for Newari food highly recommended... The most important thing that I didn't have an upset tummy after the food.

Food is authentic and good but it is hard to figure out the restaurant for outsider google map not help to much. Space is not big for kids. Best item is (sabumicha). It is worth to go there and price is little higher. Overall it is good

Come here if you are looking for an authentic Nepali/Newari village experience in the city. You are a germaphobe we're expecting super cleanliness, this is not the place. I've seen this place on YouTube and it did not disappoint. It has authentic food and you are really immersed in the kitchen with the cooks. It can be a little bit confusing if you are not a local but trust the process and you will be happy. Try a little bit of everything and you will not be let down. Some of the food is spicy so be mindful.

Tucked away in a quiet corner, this small but charming Newari eatery offers truly authentic experience. Limited menu is thoughtfully curated, serving fresh, delicious dishes that celebrates Newari flavors. Highlight is “Bara”, a crispy-on-the-outside, soft inside lentil pancake, cooked right before your eyes. With cozy ambiance, it’s perfect spot for simple yet satisfying meals. No online payment, so bring cash. Often crowded, especially on Fridays and Holidays, but absolutely worth the wait! The food is affordable, offering generous portions that satisfy your hunger without breaking the bank. ☺️☺️

Honacha Bhimsen is one of the most iconic and oldest eateries in Patan, located near the revered Bhimsen Temple in Mangal Bazar. A hidden gem nestled in the narrow alleys of this ancient city, Honacha has been serving traditional Newari cuisine for generations. The place is small, rustic, and filled with a sense of nostalgia that instantly connects visitors to the cultural soul of Lalitpur. The eatery is famous for its authentic dishes like choila, bara, chatamari, sapu mhicha, and hyangu thwon (Newari rice beer). Despite its modest appearance, the food is rich, flavorful, and deeply rooted in Newar tradition. One of the highlights of Honacha Bhimsen is its open-fire kitchen, where food is freshly prepared in front of you, maintaining the legacy of old-school cooking. The simplicity of the ambience adds to the overall charm—it’s not about fine dining, but about real, soulful food served with heritage. Honacha has become a cultural landmark, frequented by locals, food enthusiasts, and even international tourists looking to explore Nepal’s indigenous flavors. It’s not unusual to see people sitting on small stools, enjoying a plate of spicy buffalo meat and lentil pancakes while soaking in the buzzing, vibrant atmosphere of Patan. For anyone seeking a true taste of traditional Newari food in an authentic setting, Honacha Bhimsen is an essential stop. It’s more than just a restaurant—it’s a living piece of history that reflects the culinary artistry of the Newar people.
