"This Store is Too Small for Dishonest People This is the saying on one of the signs inside the Honesty Cafe, a small little cafe near the port in Ivana, Batanes. Joe and Elena own this place and because they were so busy with many other chores elsewhere, they often had to leave their little cafe which eventually turned into a self-service cafe, where even the payment for the food, drinks or souvenir items you want to get are done by dropping them into a box just sitting on the countertop. Thus, the birth of Honesty Coffee Shop where Honesty is the Best Policy. Some of the other interesting reminders posted inside the cafe :) 1) Get what you need 2) Please pay for whatever you get 3) If you have no change, knock at the next door. If no one answers, sorry, so you give more than the price. But the Lord will give you more later on. May your tribe increase!"
This was part of our South Batan Tour. The concept is simple: (1) get the items you want, (2) list them down in the log book, then (3) drop your payment in the boxes.
Make sure to bring coins because they don't give out change.
I didn't explore it fully, but I saw that there's a souvenir store at the back selling shirts and other apparel.

23 Sep 2024. This was the fifth stop of my southern tour. The place is purely self-service, and any purchase should be logged in a record by the table. Of course, exact change is needed as the place is cash only--I did not see any indicator that card or e-wallet payments can be made. Go get coffee then walk around the small port beside it to enjoy the view and breeze of the sea.

Honesty Coffee Shop in Batanes is a must-visit! The concept of self-service and trust in this shop is so refreshing. You can make your own coffee, grab a snack, and just leave your payment in the box – a true testament to the honesty of the Ivatan people. The place also has a small souvenir shop with local items, all based on the same honesty system. It's a unique and authentic experience that makes you feel connected to the local culture. The coffee is great, and the simple food hits the spot after exploring. Highly recommended!

This Honesty Store is a must visit when in Batanes. This place is so unique because it is unmanned and it relies on the honesty of the visitors. It is a souvenir shop and cafe where most tourists drop by for snacks and for toilet breaks. All items have prices. You choose what you like, list them down on a notebook and drop your exact payment in a box. I got coffee and some small local cake. There were packed rice meals and camote-cue (fried sweet potato) too.

You pay for the item/s that you get. The item/s will have to be noted on the logbook and the exact amount of the payment dropped inside the payment slot.
I have not tried purchasing from the coffee shop since I only purchased a ref magnet from their souvenir items.
This won't work though on other locations.
