Visiting Hong Kong: 3-5 Day Suggested Itinerary (Updated 2025)

"I always start my visit with a walking tour to get the lay of the land, and Hong Kong Free Tours offers great, free options for first-timers — notably the “Introduction” tour and the “Day in the Life” tour; they’re an easy way to see highlights and pick up insider tips, but remember to tip your guide at the end." - Matthew Kepnes

Wind was very knowledgable about the Hong Kong housing divide. You could tell the tour was given passionately because it wasnt rushed and no information was skipped over. Wind genuinely wanted to make sure everyone came away informed. Would highly recommend their tours even to tourists who have been Hong Kong a many times before since I feel this tour touches on issues that are less visible.

I’ve done walking tours all over the world, and this was genuinely one of the best I’ve ever experienced. The 'Intro to Hong Kong' tour offers the perfect balance of history, culture, and lived experience and is a real window into what makes this city unique. Our guide, Simeone, was absolutely fantastic. She didn’t just share facts and dates; she wove the story of Hong Kong through her own personal and family history, which brought everything to life in a way that felt real, emotional and grounded. Hearing how her family experienced the city’s changes over generations gave powerful context to everything we saw: from colonial heritage buildings to the vibrant street markets and modern political identity. It added layers of perspective you just can’t get from guidebooks. The route was well paced, perfectly structured, and full of fascinating stops from hidden alleys to major landmarks. You leave with both an understanding of Hong Kong’s complex past and a sense of the spirit and resilience of its people today. Highly recommended to anyone visiting. If you want to understand Hong Kong rather than just see it, this is the tour to take.

I had a good experience with this tour from the booking to the tour itself. I booked the Introduction to Hong Kong Free Walking Tour directly from their website in March. A day before the tour (in Oct), I received a WhatsApp message reminding me of the tour with a link to the exact meeting point (with a photo), meet up instructions and information of our guide. Our guide was Stephen. He is very knowledgeable. The 2-hour tour was broken up to the 2 parts: the history of Hong Kong and cultural & food. Both parts were good. We gain brief insights into the history of Hong Kong, its financial background, its return to China as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of being a country with 2 systems. As we walk around, Stephen also provided us with tips on where to eat some HK specialties like wanton noodles, dim sum and Siu Mai (local term for roast meats), and some Chinese migrant cultural background and practices that evolved under the British. He also shared some of his stories which makes it very personal. Overall, we had an enjoyable time. As it is a 2-hour walking tour, it’s advisable to wear good shoes, bring water and sun protection as it does get hot being around noon. A personal suggestion to the tour organiser is to incorporate some stop points for tourists to be able to buy some snacks or drinks along the way. This way, it will be a more immersive experience as we can see, smell and feel (taste). It is difficult for a tourist to backtrack to a certain store or location after the tour as they may not be familiar with the area. In addition, it would be a “taster” to the other paid tours that the company offers.

We were really lucky with the weather today as it did predict rain. Getting to the meeting point was very easy using the metro where we were met by Wind. Visiting the sitting Budha whilst beautiful was in my opinion upstaged by our next stop at a quiet temple where we had a lovely lunch. I also enjoyed the fishing village and getting an insight into the architecture and being able to visit a home on stilts. Our last stop was taking a boat ride through the village and then out in to the harbour to hopefully see pink dolphins. We were lucky and they put on a display. Finally, our guide, Wind. She is one of the best guides we’ve had on any of our travels and feel very fortunate that we had her as our guide. I’d highly recommend this tour!

On my first day in Hong Kong I did a walking tour with Wing Man. I did “introduction of Hong Kong” tour. It is such a great way to start the trip as it provides a lot of information and interesting facts about the country. Our tour guide was amazing m, she kept everybody entertained. We tried some local food and got lots of recommendations for restaurants, traditional dishes, activities and all sorts of things to enjoy during your stay. I would really recommend booking with them!

Loved the entire journey as well as the view. Really mesmerizing. And quite a romantic spot. Thanks to the organizer to help us skip the long queue outside. And the guide was particularly helpful and friendly. Definitely worth a try.

Very valueable tour. If you are in Hong Kong and want to learn the reality of many living there, this tour will inform and educate you. Our guide, Wind, shared her personal story, explained the reality of economics for low income HKer with rent and salary numbers. She guided us through an example of tiny apartment and streets of Sham Sui Po sharing valueable information. She answered all of our questions and was very professional. Definitely worth the price, but keep in mind, the tour deals with matters that may leave you drained of energy.

Finding a good guide is like finding gold! Stephen Lau turned what could’ve been just another grey street into a journey full of depth and meaning. I had prepared myself before arriving, but he added so much valuable knowledge on top. He was clear, organized, and in full control of the group—nothing felt overwhelming, even on this dark and intense tour. Stephen’s insight and professionalism made the experience unforgettable. I give him my highest recommendation and will definitely join more of his tours.
