Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan Ryokan

We really enjoyed our 2-night stay at this traditional-style Japanese onsen hotel. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. And it was fantastic to have such easy access to the very pleasant and atmospheric onsen on the top floor. ||The dinners and breakfasts were very good. It’s worth noting that these meals are served in the dining room on the second floor, not in your guest room. This allowed for efficient service and a very comfortable experience at a dining table with chairs rather than being seated on the tatami mats. ||Looking back at previous reviews for this hotel, I can see that many things have changed over the years. It would be best to ignore reviews from a few years ago as so many things have changed significantly since then. ||Highly recommended

An amazing ryokan experience with very attentive service by Lai, Teddy and the team. While we had an unfortunate issue with the bath tub in one of our rooms, the team was quick to attend to it. They even offered us an upgrade to a very beautiful room with an ensuite private onsen and covered our drinks for dinner. Very appreciative of the team for going out of the way in their service recovery and helped us to enjoy our ryokan experience with many wonderful memories. Looking forward to stay at the Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan during our next visit to Takayama :)

Amazing onsens and unbeatable hospitality. The rooms were super spacious and clean. The best view of the city from the balconies. You should definitely book if you want a real ryokan experience. Staying here was like experiencing Japanese culture to the full extent.

This traditional Japanese ryokan is very centrally based in Takayama. We had a wonderful view of the town and surroundings from our balcony. The futon beds are very warm and comfortable. The traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast were excellent. The staff at the hotel were all very friendly and polite.

Excellent ryokan. The staff were extremely attentive, and there was a lot of information and english signage, which I found very helpful since I don't speak Japanese. The food was amazing with lots of tasty courses, beautifully presented, with lots of traditional Japanese dishes. The hotel also has an excellent rooftop hot tub, which was wonderful.

A Warm Welcome in Takayama: Honjin Hiranoya Annex Exceeds Expectations From our initial online communication, Honjin Hiranoya Annex in Takayama has consistently impressed us. Arriving on a chilly Thursday afternoon, we were warmly greeted with a shuttle pickup from JR Takayama Station. Upon arrival, we were treated to a soothing cup of green tea and a delightful local sweet at reception, followed by an efficient check-in. Our room and amenities were a pleasant surprise. We enjoyed the thoughtful touches, including socks, slippers, and a yukata for the onsen. The bathroom was well-stocked with cleanser, lotion, and toiletries. Breakfasts were served in a cozy private room on the second floor, featuring a delicious spread each morning—salad, eggs, sausage, and fruit, with a special apple jam treat. The staff's kindness extended beyond the hotel; they even offered us snow boots for a snowy outing. Our Western-style room with tatami mats and window screens was both comfortable and serene. Despite having stayed at fancier hotels, Honjin Hiranoya Annex's genuine hospitality and thoughtful amenities truly stand out. Highly recommended!

Great facilities, great location, excellent service and above all very helpful and kind staff. We had a great stay on December 26 and enjoyed every moment in the hotel. We would like to specifically thank Mr Lai, Mr. Oraguchi, Mr. Kawamoto and the lady at the front desk for their very kind help when our car was stuck in a roadside drainage channel near the hotel after we had checked out on December 27. It was a very snowy and cold day but their help warmed our hearts. Without their help and numerous phone calls with car rental company, we wouldn’t be able to continue our journey smoothly. When we ever have chance to visit Takayama again, we will definitely stay in Honjin Hiranoya Bekkan, a warm home for us.

I cannot recommend this ryokan enough!! We stayed for two nights end of March/start of April. The staff were so friendly and patient, taking time to explain aspects of the hotel, onsen, and how to wear the traditional clothes. They made the evening meal and breakfast so accessible to foreigners by explaining each element, and a menu in English also helped! The new ladies onsen nextdoor allows you try different onsen locations, and I would really recommend a massage! I lucked out by going over at 3pm and had the onsen to myself! You will leave feeling so relaxed and well taken care of! We luckily had a room with river views which was stunning and a balcony to enjoy a cup of tea from and watch the people below. What an amazing way to unwind from the travel and rushing around the big city. The walks around the town are easy to get to from this hotel, and their shuttle service to and from the station is so helpful, and the drivers are so friendly!! We absolutely loved our stay, and it has rejuvenated us for our onward travel. Thank you so much to all the staff!
