A Different Kind of Soba at Sarashina Horii | The New Yorker

"My first experience with soba, the thin Japanese noodle made from buckwheat, was at Honmura An, a temple of Zen elegance in SoHo that, starting in 1991, made its noodles by hand, on the premises, for sixteen years. It was also the first time I had sea urchin, and Honmura An’s soba with uni remains one of the formative meals of my life." - Shauna Lyon

Google
The menu is divided between "tasting dishes", which are small portions, "cold soba", "hot soba and udon", and "rice dishes". Instead of getting the pre-selected tasting menu with 7-9 courses, we made our own by picking from the "tasting dishes" as starters and a udon for main. It was exactly what we wanted for our last meal in Japan. The tasting dishes were excellent, very nicely done and served in a very kind and helpful manner by the staff. Highlight was the green salad with figs, the asparagus and the chicken meatballs. The udon was warm to the heart and full of flavour. The owner and all staff were friendly and spoke excellent English. The price is decent - all the money you pay you get in quality back. I highly recommend dining here.

Google
A great soba experience in Tokyo. The restaurant is modern and clean, with a window to show you the noodles being made. The taste is outstanding, and i highly recommend the zaru soba with tempura. For being such a nice place, the prices are modest too. Definitely worth a try.

This place used to be in NYC, but has relocated. The Sona is excellent and all of the small dishes are of a similar level. I would recommend almost anything on the menu. The owner is very friendly and it is a generally English friendly place. The soba with uni is one of the specialties and I wouldn't leave without trying the apricot daifuku

Google
My favourite soba place in Tokyo! Have been coming here for many years and the standard is very consistent. Their specialty is the cold soba but I love the soupy one as well. Give their eggplant with ginger and Tori Dango a try too!

Google
Return visit proved this to be the best delicate cold soba noodle in town. The fried oysters, yam and duck were great too. But the noodles are out of this world. We finished off with an apricot daifuku sweet. Had to have 2 and was the best daifuku to date.

Google
Highly recommended. Friendly staff that keep talking to us about the dishes and the culture differences. Soba is super rich in flavour. One of the best in Tokyo so far.

Yelp
Honmura An had a long run in NYC's SoHo, providing New Yorker's looking for something besides sushi with their dose of alternative Japonica. Then Koichi Kobari took himself back to Tokyo to carry on the restaurant legacy of his late father. If you crave an accessible American-friendly experience that can range from an inexpensive straightforward ni-hachi soba afternoon to a ¥10,000 + pax Roppongi night, you'll love Honmura An. This place was on my must-do in Tokyo list for more than five years. One brief night later I have to say it was worth the wait. Kobari-san and his mother look after their patrons like guests in their home. Without hovering they will notice if you have any needs. The restaurant is small so it can feel crazy busy but the front of the house staff's work reflects the owner's serene but attentive service and the back of the house cranks out food quickly. The decor looks spare but on closer reflection you will see thoughtful elegance in the simplicity. Select your soba only after you have gone through the other dishes to your hearts content. It's a strong selection of well executed items meant to precede or accompany your soba. The soba is ni-hachi, made on premises every day, and has the right toothsome bite. The nihonshu selection is nicely curated. Not surprisingly, wine is also prominently featured It took me four years to get here and my single night was worth the trek out to Roppongi. I could come here every week if I lived in Tokyo and not tire of the food.

Yelp
there was a line out the door to try this michelin-rated soba spot i ordered the zaru with the oyako-don and was sadly underwhelmed the oyakodon was pretty bad the egg and chicken weren't flavorful and overcooked the sauce was not tasty either the soba itself i thought was fine but definitely hyped

Yelp
Honmura An was a very popular soba shop in Japan, but when the owner's father passed away, he moved back to Japan to take over his father's business. I arrived at the restaurant around 10:45 am and there were a few people in line waiting to get into the restaurant. It opens promptly at 11 am, and I was seated right away. Originally, I was just going to get the soba for about ¥1000, but I saw the soba topped with fresh Uni for ¥3000 which was the signature dish at Honmura An in NYC. Being a sucker for Uni, I had to try it. I also ordered an ice green tea and the chicken meatballs as an appetizer. The chicken meatballs came out first. They were very simple, yet so perfect. They were fried perfectly and was provided with just a tiny bit of sauce letting you know that very little was needed to assist the beautifully made appetizer. The soba came out rather quickly afterwards and had a very generous portion of the prettiest uni I have ever seen. The sauce comes on the side and the server instructed me to pour it all over the noodles rather than dip the noodles into the sauce like I"m used to. Being 99% buckwheat, the soba had a heartiness to it that I've never tasted in soba before. It was definitely something special. Though I spent a bit more than I originally expected for this lunch, it's highly recommended that you opt for the uni. The creaminess of it just took the soba to a whole new level and played a perfect compliment to the heartiness of the almost 100% buckwheat noodles.

Yelp
Excellent 4.5 star soba by US standards, I'd say 3.5 for Japan. The cold soba was well cooked, broth was flavorful and well appointed. Not as sumptuous as other places in Tokyo but still a very good soba place. You won't be disappointed as it's still better than anything you'd find Stateside but won't be wowed like Tamawarai (good luck waiting in line too)

Yelp
No culinary tour of Japan can be complete without the finest soba that can't be duplicated outside Japan. This posh restaurant has the clientele and ambiance that work with very high quality soba that will make for a great experience for the foodie who wants it all. It's not cheap but for what it is, is not expensive either. I highly recommend it. I'll probably be back next time I'm in Tokyo.

Yelp
A Michelin-rated soba joint with impeccably friendly service and amazing food for lunch and dinner. Where else can you have a Michelin-starred lunch for $10? Honmura An is one of my favorite restaurants in Tokyo. They do everything so well - especially the soba. Soba is an art to do well. Since it doesn't use flour, it's very difficult to make soba to the right consistency. The dipping sauce here is also so well balanced compared to other places I've been in Japan. My favorite soba dishes here are the Zaru (with simple seaweed on top) and the Duck (served with a rich duck broth). Also don't miss their dinner if you have the chance. It's done tapas-style with such sophistication that you can taste the quality of their ingredients. Reservations are needed for dinner, and their dinner ends early. For lunch, skip the lunch rush, which starts around 12-12:30. There are many soba restaurants in Japan, but this one takes the cake for me because of their quality, service, and English-friendly menus and staff. Yelp
Hadn't had soba in Japan yet do I looked for one on yelp and I'm glad I did. What drew me to this place besides the extremely positive reviews was that several reviews stated the owner was very hospitable, personable, and speaks really good English. The reviews were spot on, he was really cool and it was nice talking to him. He also explained to me, a soba newbie, on what exactly to do to eat it properly. As for the food, I went for the slightly expensive soba with a special duck dipping sauce that he recommended. He also recommended the plain soba that most people get, but I this dipping sauce was intriguing. By the time I tried it, I was amazed. It was extremely rich and matched the perfectly made soba very nicely. I'm not much of a soba aficionado, but I could tell went this place was popular. I also really enjoyed drinking the leftover sauce (adding water to suit your saltiness threshold). I'm definitely coming back here again!

Yelp
We opted for the tasting menu. It was a Thursday night and our hotel kindly made reservations for us at 6pm. We came a little early and was seated right away. It was 8 course, two of which were soba noodles. Everything was delicious and staff was kind and attentive. If you come early you can watch them make the soba.

Yelp
Really spectacular tempura and the cold uni soba is not to be missed. Quiet but close to the station

Yelp
An Absolutely delicious spot for lunch. The lunch sets come with your choice of oyako don or ten don, misoshiru, pickles and of course the magical soba. The noodles are perfectly chewy in texture and while dipped with wasabi it truly is a great meal. Lunch sets are super affordable considering the fact that the ambiance is modern and clean with impeccable service. ¥1600 lunch at a Michelin rated restaurant? Yes please!

Yelp
After 3 days of eating ramen continuously, I crave for some lighter noodle to feel stomach. I decided soba & ended up at Honmura. I ordered the hot Soba duck & was not disappointed. The broth was light, yet still very savory. I also tried their signature appetizer, which is chicken meatball. To be honest, the meatball was good but not mindblowing good. The staff are kind & very attentive.

Yelp
Bottom line at the top: either the best or second best soba I had in Tokyo. Honmura-an is a must visit if you are in Roppongi or Akasaka, or are working in Mori Tower. -- Came here for lunch in 2011 while I was interning in the Mori Tower in Roppongi. This soba is the real deal and they also have fresh wasabi that they grate for you seconds before serving and it is seriously life changing. Like my boss and I almost started crying but it was so good hahaha. Anyways the soba has a good amount if bite to it and is just slightly nutty. They have great lunch sets too so this is the perfect spot for a quick power lunch. Chef used to have a spot in NYC but from what I understand he closed it to move back to Japan. When I went they were closed Mondays and certain Tuesdays so your best bet is to check ahead of time or go in the second half of the week.

Yelp
Maybe it was because of the high expectations but I thought it was decent but not rave worthy. I ordered Uni soba and felt that the ratio of Uni to soba was off. The staff was kind and helped us select some appetizers. I'd say the best thing I had there was avocado with soy sauce.... not much to say about this place....

Yelp
I love the place. Nice soba noodle made 100% soba soba flour, no wheat flour. Friendly and courteous. Good choice of Sake and wine too.

Yelp
Excellent soba noodles but the highlight is the seasonal appetizers and seasonal soba as well as the various varieties of soba. Great wines too as owner loves wines in addition to the special sake. Refined interior.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in Tokyo! A must try and the hospitality is amazing! The soba is the best I've ever tasted. Price is reasonable and if you are in Tokyo check it out!!! We had the course menu and everything came out wonderful. Will definitely come back again.

Yelp
Amazing place. Come early if you do not have a reservation. English menu. Duck appetizer and duck Udon were incredible!
