Honmyoji

A significant Nichiren Buddhist temple located on the western slopes of Kumamoto City. Established in 1585 by the renowned samurai lord Katō Kiyomasa to honor his father, the temple was initially built in Osaka and later relocated to Kumamoto Castle grounds. Following Kiyomasa’s death in 1611, the temple was moved to its current location in 1614, adjacent to his grave site.

They have the most affordable omamoris. Great atmosphere do be ready for all the stairs!

Public transport access is non existent, plenty of stairs to go to the top but the view on a good day is very beautiful.

A beautiful and peaceful place. There are over 170 steps up to the temple, but there are lots to enjoy on the way up. A perfect way to start my morning.

Weekdays are nice and empty.

I have been in Japan for a long time, so temples and shrines don't seem that unique anymore, but the Honmyoji temple complex is really nice. You can really get a feel for traditional Japanese temples here.

Beautiful location in all seasons. Lantern festival in March was great experience with cherry blossom
