I was sitting at the airport and struck up a conversation with a lady and her son. I told her how I wished Hawaii was more self sustainable when it comes to food, especially meat. I explained that it was difficult to find and purchase meat from one of the biggest known ranch on the island. She then suggested I try J.J.'s and stated that it was grass fed beef grown on the island, prepared, and freshly sold. I was so excited, to find grass fed beef locally and double happy, since she said that the price of the meats were reasonable.
So the next day we drove to Honokaa, which was about a 32 mile drive from Waikaloa. We enjoyed the drive and the beauty of the picturesque country along the way. I even thought about how wonderful it would be to retire in the Kamuela region and start a farm. Since it's many years away, I quickly put those thoughts to rest.
We arrived in good time and as we pulled into the parking lot, which was empty. I knew we were going to be disappointed. Yes, I was right, they were closed on Sunday's and Monday's. My heart sank, we drove this far only to be greeted by a closed sign? Argh! As the saying goes, when life hands you lemons, you make lemonade and that's exactly what we did. We drove to Hilo for the day, which was another great place to visit. Anyway, getting back to my review of this place. We ended up coming back the next day and were relieved to find it open. They had a refrigerator filled with fresh grass fed meat. I really felt like I hit the jackpot, when this place was first mentioned to me. We ended up buying oxtails, porterhouse, chuck roast, T-bone steaks. We walked out paying about $40.00 for our grass fed beef. Yes, that's right, local grass fed beef. Wow!
We cooked up a steak for dinner and it was juicy and tender and how I wish I had bought more. However we just had a medium cooler, so we couldn't buy as much as we wanted.
I already mentioned to my husband that we'll need a bigger cooler the next time we are up here and he quickly agreed that we'll be back. I am so thankful that this place was recommended to me, all by striking up a little conversation while waiting to board. Oh, what a treasure of a place this is. So if you want local fresh beef, this is the place! if you want to save some money and support local and at the same time fill your belly with some tasty meat, this place is it. I can't wait to come back!
