"Honor & Folly The smallest hotel on our list, Honor & Folly is the place to go if you want to avoid the crowds and feel as if you are visiting family. The second-story guesthouse features two rooms, perfect for couples traveling together or a small family looking for a quiet escape. Hardwood floors and exposed brick abound and guests are welcome to order a picnic basket to go or reserve artisanal groceries in advance."

First visit to Detroit for a long weekend just to check the city out and WOW this space is lovely! Clean and incredibly comfortable from the beds to the kitchen to the beautiful windows looking down on Corktown. Impeccably decorated and very relaxing. Loved the neighborhood restaurants and central location. Definitely plan to stay here again!

We stumbled on this incredible loft when visiting Detroit for the first time; best described as rustic industrial, this place had everything you may need for a comfortable stay in a hip end of Detroit. Two gorgeous bedrooms and a neat 2nd floor nook that accommodates another double bed. This place can actually sleep six people comfortably. Full modern kitchen and many tasteful details abound; also has two full bathrooms. The area features an ultra cool urban mini golf course designed with recycled metal finds and old bikes; cool cafes and bars abound on this great little strip. Neat views of the haunting old historic train station, currently under development. A must stay place for urban folks that get this chic style of loft - you won't be disappointed!

What a score. Perfectly situated on Michigan Avenue near the old statuesque train station, Honor & Folly is a great central hub for those looking to explore the Motor City. You could literally hole up in this incredibly cute space for a couple days of romance or relaxation, leaving only for coffee downstairs at Astro, or BBQ next door at Slows. But for those who want to get out, easy parking and access to Michigan Ave—as well as nearby highways—offer short drives to downtown, and just about everywhere else.||||The space is awesome, with a huge kitchen and open floor plan. Bedrooms and bathrooms are all clean and comfy. Only catch is you might find yourself sharing the space with a couple strangers. For us, this was a huge bonus, as we made new friends who inspired some changes in our plans and made us frothy lattes. Enjoy!

We traveled with another couple to Detroit in September 2012 and rented the two rooms at Honor and Folly. It really is terrific -- the apartment/inn is eccentrically and pleasingly decorated, and it is directly above the most amazing cocktail bar I have ever been to (and I have been to a LOT). We all joked that we could stay a weekend at Honor and Folly, eating barbeque at Slows, having coffee downstairs, and drinking cocktails at the Sugar House, but Detroit is fascinating and the people are wonderful, and it would be a shame to miss that! Do stay at Honor and Folly ... enjoy being at the heart of a trying-to-revive-Detroit-critics-be-damned block, and be Honored to play a very small part.

We had a great stay at Honor & Folly while visiting Detroit for the Maker Faire, the week after Detroit declared bankruptcy. The place is well decorated, spacious and in a fun location (albeit a bit sketchy) that is a short drive from many of the great things Detroit has to offer.||||Things we loved: great location (above Slows BBQ, close to Dequindre Cut bike path and the Eastern Market); great decor; spacious; super close to the border and highway; close to Supino's pizza; owner was very responsive via text to address our questions; across the street from the abandoned Roosevelt train station (cool and a bit creepy)||||Cautionary notes: bring your own soap for the shower (there was none when we went); don't depend on WiFi (you have to tap into the free WiFi from Slows BBQ downstairs and it didn't work for us - this was an unexpected challenge, as our kids wanted to watch Netflix and were unable to); scissors as a wall decoration in the spare bedroom (nice to look at, bad for kids - no running please); parking can be a bit tricky (you want to park out front, but there are a lot of folks coming to eat at Slows, so parking can be a bit of a challenge).||||Recommendations: rent bikes at the waterfront and bike around Detroit, particularly Eastern Market and the Dequindre Cut greenway; visit the nearby Heidelberg Project.

I was treated to a vacation in my hometown by my wife this weekend, staying here at Honor and Folly Friday and Saturday nights. Booking was easy, and the owner easily reachable. The space is amazing, both for what is within but where it is. Inside is exposed brickwork, 2 beds and baths, a loft space, and 2 outdoor porches. If you want to cook, there are pans and such at your disposal, a great island for prep, and a an expansive view to the (hopefully restored one day) Michigan Central Station and Roosevelt Park. Downstairs is one of Detroit's best places to eat, Slow's BBQ. The block that Honor and Folly is on has Astro Coffee, Sugar House for cocktails, the Mercury Bar for burgers, and is just a block or two from many foodie or drink destinations.

This was the perfect place to stay in Detroit. Everything you need is right here --- we visited the coffee bar downstairs every morning and ended each evening with cocktails at the Sugar House. The apartment was stylish. The second bedroom is small, but pleasantly quirky. Highly recommended.

My wife secured this reservation for us and another couple to stay in Detroit for the weekend. It's a loft apartment located above Slow's, Astro Coffee and Sugar Lounge on the burgeoning strip of Michigan Avenue, and a new burger bar just opened across the street too (Mercury).||||This is styled more like a B&B than a hotel, with the owner making reservations via email or phone and taking payment in person at the end of your stay. There is a front door with a coded key box, and the place is all yours after that. A full and open kitchen and living area is perfect for hosting a get-together (they do classes and such as well) and there are two bedrooms toward the back, with a full bath for each. ||||The street parking is free, there is amazing BBQ at Slow's, Burgers and shakes at Mercury, hand-poured coffee at Astro, and craft cocktails at Sugar Lounge. What more do you need?||||If you need concierge, meeting rooms, fitness rooms and a pool...then this is not for you :)

Yelp
Staying at the Honor & Folly reminded me of experiences in the past when I would stay at very small-scale inns or self-catering apartments in Europe. You get a place to lay your head and you get a feel for what it's like to live in a place. In a sense, visiting Detroit is like visiting another country. It defies convention and expectation and pulls you in. Honor & Folly is a terrific place to fall in love with the city. It's perched above three essential places: a BBQ joint, a cocktail bar and a coffee shop. Across the street is the iconic ruin of Michigan's central station. Down Michigan is downtown Detroit. The interior is beautiful and driven by a strong design aesthetic. Goods like blankets, dishes and cutting boards are for sale and their makers have fascinating only-in-michigan stories. The proprietress, Meghan, is a design connoisseur and clearly a linker of people, who cultivates a very easygoing vibe while sacrificing nothing in terms of the quality of visual effect. Every object in every room seems to have a functional and decorative purpose. Here's what you need to know about Honor & Folly. Parking is street only and because Slows BBQ is so popular (as in wait for two hours for a table popular), many people are parking on the street. Even so, we had no problem finding a decent spot within view of where we were staying. This is a self-catering place so you can buy food and cook it up, but there's no breakfast with the bed. We bought coffee downstairs, had them grind it and then brewed our own little french press each morning. I highly recommend this inn. If you've given serious thought to exploring Detroit or just want a nest-like getaway, check it out. The Honor & Folly site describes the inn as: "A small-scale, design-focused Detroit inn, Honor & Folly is reminiscent of the way folks used to travel: a few beds above the village pub or restaurant with a hearty breakfast. You'll be immersed in the oldest neighborhood of Detroit - smack in the middle of one of the most thriving blocks in the city. You'll sit next to locals at the bar downstairs--or the coffee shop--and learn about the city from people who live here. Detroiters are a pretty friendly lot."

Yelp
Stayed at Honor & Folly this past Labour Day Monday, plus, following Tuesday night. Short and sweet getaway. The nicely appointed retro apartment was perfect for our base in Detroit. Going over the Ambassador Bridge, after clearing U.S. Customs, the apartment is two or three minutes away. Host was excellent helping us to reserve the rental space, as well as offering hip trip suggestions. Just outside the door of the pad, there are unique Corktown restaurants, cafes, and bars (i.e., Slows B.B.Q., The Sugar House, Mercury Burger and Bar, and Astro Coffee, what else do you need, eh?!). We did not have a car during our stay in the Motor City, yes, if you can believe it. Used Via Rail train service to Windsor station, then, hired a taxi to take us to the U.S. During the day, one can easily walk from the apartment to all sites in the downtown of Detroit, and hire a taxi if too tired to walk back. Again, car is not required to get the best out of Detroit, so long as you like to walk, befriend a reliable taxi driver, and know where you're heading. We can't wait to go back to Detroit, and stay here.
