When in Montauk, ya gotta go for the seafood. It just feels like the right thing to do. Yeah I'm sure there are plenty of great burgers, pizza, and other foody fare, but I'm always jonesing for some fishy food when I find myself at THE END. That's just what my fiancée and I went for when we trekked out to Montauk in August to have a splendid meal at Hooked.
Well, it should be noted that Hooked (or hooked with a lowercase "h" as it likes to be known) is a relatively no frills kind of place. With Montauk having a lot of that suave-surfer high-end feel going for it these days (if you get what I'm saying), hooked kind of beats to it's own drum. There's really no where to eat inside of hooked. It's more of an order and take to-go or outside to one of their few sidewalk tables. Though if you like a little more secludedness, they've transformed the adjacent alleyway into a little table alcove which is where we sat after we ordered up our grub.
Speaking of grub, you'll find plenty of that aforementioned seafood that I was looking for along with some land lover options. Leading the charge was plenty of lobster as I went with the lobster salad roll (coleslaw on the side) and a lobster bisque that I shared with the lady. A side of sweet potato fries were also purchased while the female ordered up a boat of crab cakes served with regular fries.
Starting with the bisque, it definitely was creamy and had that lobster flavor, though I think there's a few other bisques I still put above it (Jordan Lobster Farms forever and always). Moving on to the lobster salad roll, that had plenty of chunky tender lobster meat and the toasted roll brought each bite together so nicely. The sweet potato fries were, well, a sweet accompaniment and a great alternative flavor to everything (the slaw was fresh and crisp too). I also took a nab of my fiancée's crab cakes which were actually quite tasty (I say "actually" because I'm not big on crab cakes in general). It was a fine meal that really didn't break the bank, which you may often find in Montauk with seafood.
Overall, hooked has everything you're looking for when it comes to some great seafood to chow down on. It might be a little too casual for some and it may not be the greatest seafood you'll ever eat, but it's a solid spot with respectable prices which is enough to warrant a formidable four star review. I'm sure hooked will, um, hook me in again sometime soon.
