Christmas in Hopelands. This was a very special event if you have family from out of town for the holidays. It is very well organized and so many lights for all to see.

Meika

Google
Absolutely amazing. Very scenic and excellent layout. There is an abundance of wildlife. Very peaceful

Several times a year we visit the serenity here. Spring is our favorite. Everyone enjoys the music and lights at Christmas, everyone loves the colors of Fall, but the magic of Spring and all of the turtles, the flowers, the Koi pond and the crisp newness of the promise of our new year, this is my absolute favorite. You can walk the paths, sit on the benches, bird watch fish watch or swing on the swings up on the hill or walk your dog or have a small picnic. The most relaxing place in aiken sc !

Google
How fun to find a botanical garden in the middle of Aiken. Enjoyed a picnic lunch there. There's also a horse racing museum there, but wasn't open on the Wednesday we were there.

A few years ago my lovely wife took me to Hopelands Gardens. This was my first visit there, and it was a very nice, relaxing walk around the grounds! Very enjoyable. We didn't get to explore everywhere due to my mobility issues, but I felt like we did cover a lot of the grounds. I didn't have my camera, and I wish I did, but cell phone cameras are really pretty high quality these days. I look forward to another visit, probably next Spring!

Google
Beautiful large historic park with classic Aiken buildings, fountains, and ruins. The trees are simply ancient and beautiful, but were even more majestic before hurricane Helene and a previous ice storm.

Lucky D.

Google
Beautiful place to walk in nature and among the trees! And see one of the horses.

Thomas K.

Google
Went to look at Christmas lights. We didn't stay long due to temperature. Looked beautiful there. The restroom was clean and they had a museum for horse races.

Mira S.

Yelp
It was peaceful and beautiful. I loved the labyrinth and koi the most. I just visited Seattle, November, so I'm excited to see it again during the spring/summer.

Yelp
This is one of the best free things to do in the area. The sprawling lawn and ponds with fish and turtles are fantastic for little kids, and enjoying the beauty of the gardens will keep parents and older people occupied too! There's quite the outdoor variety here; it ranges from grass lawn to manicured garden, to constructed wetlands, which means you've got a good shot as seeing some interesting bird species too. One of the best things about Hopelands is the light show around Christmastime. The entire place turns into a walking light display and it's a local highlight. Be aware that you have to take the bus here for this event and can't just park in the usually parking spot. The rye patch and thoroughbred museum are technically separate, but since they are directly adjacent and basically in the same area it's worth mentioning them too, so go check those out while you're at Hopelands!

Yelp
Christmas at Hopelands is fun. Taking the kids through and watching their faces is fun. They have lights, crafts, cookies, hot chocolate, cider, and lots of smiles Loads of fun.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
This complex includes a series of manicured greenery and waterways as well as some exhibitions focused on horse racing. Apparently a lot of very fast thoroughbreds came from around here. The grounds were quite pleasant, but I was surprised that many of the water features were not running or seemed not well maintained and rather sludgy. The place is named as a set of gardens, but I didn't see a ton of interesting plant life either. Nonetheless, it was a nice area, and it is free.

Yelp
A friend of mine suggested this place to go for a stroll and look at the beauty around us. My mother has to be in a wheelchair and she doesn't go outside much and if I mention a garden of any type, she lights up. The only negative thing I have to say is that it was difficult pushing a wheelchair through some places. It has been a couple of months ago, I've just forgotten to leave my review. But it was Labor Day and we got there and left just before it started raining. It was beautiful out and the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. We saw some huge Koi fish and a bunch of turtles. Thankfully my friend who suggested this place came along and she shared her knowledge on most of the plants and trees. She also knows about Quarter Horses too which made me feel like she was our tour guide. We plan to come back next Spring. There was no charge for entry and parking was free.

Yelp
I came here while on vacation in Aiken and I was so worth the stop. It is very close to downtown and worth walking over. The grounds are stunning and there is a lot of shade that comes in handy on hot summer days. This is a must see if you are in the area.
google avatar

Melencia J.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Aiken to relax and do a bit of reading, meditating, slow walking while tree bathing. You can bring a a blanket, your dog, and friends to take a break from the day. Several musical and children's events happen throughout the year. Definitely check it out!
google avatar

Sherri D.

Yelp
Great place to walk dog, take a stroll, ot just sit and watch wildlife. Love the labyrinth. Thcross over into Rose Hill is beautiful.
google avatar

Yelp
A nice place tucked away in Aiken, SC. I unfortunately came at the end of the season. I can imagine how vibrant this place must be in Spring. Even though, I saw some lovely flowers as well as water. This is a nice spot for photography and a calm date. It is also nice to take a healthy walk. There is something relaxing about being in nature. Go out and smell the green Earth!
google avatar

Danielle P.

Yelp
Wow, the Hopelands Gardens are absolutely beautiful! I decided to do some wandering around Aiken, SC this weekend, and it didn't disappoint. Aiken is a welcoming small southern hospitality city! They were crowned the #1 small town in Southern Living Magazine, south awards in 2018! A 14 acre estate turned into a public garden, century old oaks, horticultural labyrinth, a few ponds with fountains, and a theater that the US Marine Corps uses yearly. I will have to go back for the Christmas Lights in the winter! They were not overcrowded and the trails were paved for the most part. User friendly for all, and especially for children! Lots of space to roam and not be in contact with others. They do have a few small gardens houses that were closed. All kinds of flowers were in bloom all over the gardens. The Horse Race Hall Of Fame museum is located toward the back, so don't miss this free museum. The bathroom is also located in the same area. This lovely free green space is free to all! Face mask are required inside the bldgs. I really enjoyed my time here yesterday! Enjoy!
google avatar

Lex P.

Yelp
This was one of the first places my wife I visited when we came to Aiken. We visited during the Christmas season to see the lights - beautiful! They even offered a shuttle the made parking a breeze. Hot cider and cookies made the experience all the more memorable. We've visited a couple of times since moving to Aiken and every visit has been wonderful.

Yelp
If you are in search of one location with a broad array of perfect settings (from picnics to weddings to holidays), this is it. Want to spend a afternoon writing? Practicing your photography? Sunbathing while watching ducks swim nearby? Come to Hopeland. No fees, no admission. Just nature (including oak trees over a century old) and 14 acres to walk. There are "garden sites" you can rent for special occasions and a Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame & Museum.* Come December there are thousands of holiday lights to see and the gift shop sells hot chocolate and candy canes to enjoy while you try and make sure none are missed. You'll find it is not far from Augusta and is just off the downtown area of Aiken. Open everyday from 10 am till sunset, surely you can find the time to go. It is a restful reprieve from urban life. *Aiken prides itself on having trained 6 Kentucky Derby winners.

Candace O.

Yelp
I'm here on a Monday. 2pm. It's all locked up. I'm an hour away from home and was hoping to sit and sketch in the park for the afternoon. It say open on the website.
google avatar

Mahogany M.

Yelp
This very historic and monumental place is the best to take long walks or to just spend time with your beautiful family and friends. They have an annual Christmas lights show every year we're you can bring you family to see the pretty lights. There are free refreshments put out for everyone like cookies and and hot chocolate it's really sweet to know that your community will still do things like this for the whole town to enjoy. My absolute favorite part about hopelands gardens is the nice house that the family use to live in and the wonderful doll house I loved it.
google avatar

Angela A.

Yelp
The gardens are wonderful! My daughter and I had so much fun exploring the property and finding the signs that label the plants and trees. You have the ability to take a "mobile tour" with your phone and hear charming locals give more information about them. It's hard to pick a favorite section so I'll highlight what we really enjoyed in this trip, as I can imagine that changes each time: -Koi pond with turtles and fountains. -The Dollhouse (Although it was closed when we went, it sparked a lot of interest from my daughter. It's only open on Sunday for limited hours and is home to the Aiken Garden Club). -the stables that house statues of horses (from a distance I thought they were real). -the stone fountain area where we found a beautifully painted rock. -the gazebos and amphitheater We did see the rose garden but there were no roses to be found. I see the wonderful potential of the gardens and I'm only disappointed we didn't come here sooner. If we stay in the area, I'd love to experience the seasonal changes and community events! Housekeeping: there are public restrooms, garbage cans, doggy waste bags and free parking.

Yelp
Great place to walk and view nature, well keep up which is a lot of work and it's free
google avatar

Olwen C.

Yelp
These gardens are beautiful!! Such a lovely place. There are several paths to stroll around the gardens and a few reflection pools, a pond with several turtles and koi fish. It would be a beautiful place for a special event!
google avatar

Ronald S.

Yelp
When my boys where growing up this was an almost every Saturday experience for them. They loved the ducks, squirrels and fish in Hopelands. They would try to feed them even though they weren't suppose to do that. Once they got to be teenagers that stopped. I love Hopelands because it is so quiet and peaceful there and I've been there many times to just hike the gardens. It is very tranquil there and a great place to just read a book among nature.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
A calming atmosphere that is nice for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. Make sure to do the labyrinth.
google avatar

Carrie D.

Yelp
I stopped by Hopeland Gardens around christmas time to look at all the christmas lights and it was a beautiful experience. Many areas of the gardens weren't open due to covid, but it was still a delightful experience being able to walk around a huge garden with christmas lights everywhere! It is so big that I didn't really know where I was going sometimes, but it was overall so beautiful. I would say they could improve on the signage a little more, but other than that, I had a lovely time here.
google avatar

Mr. W.

Yelp
One of the crown jewels of Aiken. The pond has the turtles in it, the ampitheather hosts the United States Marine Corps band each year, and the Christmas lights are not to be missed. Aiken has Southern Hospitality written all over it; it is why so many yankees live down here. Great Place to relax for a walk and be in nature.

Maria D.

Yelp
I always love our morning walk at Hopelands, Aiken wouldn't be the same without it!
google avatar

Sheron H.

Yelp
The most peaceful place in Aiken. Love the walk and taking pics. It's a must see in Aiken.
google avatar

Katherine H.

Yelp
Beautiful pathways winding through a lovely garden with lots of turtles to feed. Free- what could be better a day trip to Aiken than a trip to Hopelands, a walk through Hitchcock woods, visit Aiken Museum and downtown!!
google avatar

Cara R.

Yelp
Hopeland Gardens a Messi location in downtown Aiken! Truly a beauty in all seasons but spectacular spring and fall. A place to meander and enjoy the beauty but also an excellent place for your next family photo shoot. Don't miss the mini fun activities and performances that happen there!
google avatar

Susanne O.

Yelp
I came in on a winter day when they had all the magical Christmas lights in set up process. This caused the trails to be a little tough to navigate with a dog on a leash. However, it was an experience that had me planning my next trip when I could fully enjoy the flowers and plants in a more prolific season. I spent an hour or so and very much enjoyed myself. The labyrinth is lovely.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
It's a great place to come view nature. Take a walk and relax. It is amazing at Christmas time with the lights.
google avatar

Aaron E.

Yelp
A lot of good things and a little bad. The good: Beautiful trees. Sprawling Live Oaks with thick, branching arms for your unruly children to bounce on. Towering Deodar Cedars, branches spread pendulously, generating a dab of shade from the penetrating sun. Trees like Southern Magnolias and others not noted, evenly spaced to decorate the landscape. Through the many winding trails and courtyards, there are 14 acres to roam or romance. Picturesque for those moments where memories are created. The bad (very minor): The pond water color is not natural, it has a lime green tint. It compliments sunny days and reflecting rays as they ride the crest of each subtle wave, but it has a synthetic attribute that kills my connection with nature. Overall, the park is very nice, it's free to access, it has clean toilets, there's a racehorse museum, and the birds sing freely. So with that, I will be visiting routinely.

Yelp
Is therean easy access for handicap to concert area rocks are rather large when one is unsteady on your feet
google avatar

Sherry C.

Yelp
Oh, this is such a beautiful place! While we were strolling around downtown Aiken, a nice gentleman offered to take our picture. We told him that we were from out of town and he asked if we were going to go to Hopelands Gardens. We had not planned to go since we had never heard of it. We went to lunch, but had a little time to spare so we decided to stop by. It's absolutely beautiful! So much to see and we had so little time. Spring is a beautiful time of year anyway, and this place just seemed like heaven. All the fountains are breathtaking. It's the perfect place to go to walk off a meal, take in some great scenery, have a picnic, or just sit on a park bench. I can't wait to go back. We didn't have time to do the Labyrinth, and I am dying to go back to do that. It looks like so much fun. I sure wish we could have stayed longer, but I plan to make a special trip just to come back here. It's on my bucket list.

SB J.

Yelp
Always a beautiful walk in nice weather and we love to visit the Christmas lights at Hopeland every December.
google avatar

Adrienne K.

Yelp
What a gem. So beautiful. Just a gorgeous place to breath fresh air, take in the heavenly scenery, and feel the rich history. Wonderful place for meditation, a picnic, stroll in the park, or even a wedding!
google avatar

Alyssa P.

Yelp
It's a great place to take your kids to for a little peaceful outing. Feeding the fish and turtles pieces of bread, climbing trees, have a picnic. Or family photos, wedding venue would be amazing at this location.
google avatar

Devin T.

Yelp
A great place to walk around in the Aiken area. You can feed the fish and turtles. They have store time during the summer months. My kids enjoy going very much.

Diane P.

Yelp
A wondrous place with something to notice every minute! Something, many things, always in bloom. Changing daily, seasonly. Peaceful most of the time but can be busy with families on the weekends or evening. Very special.
google avatar

Stuart M.

Yelp
Best place to enjoy a beautiful casual stroll. The trees are lovely. Great place for family photographs. Very well kept, even after the nightly raccoon scavengers
google avatar

Rhiannon C.

Yelp
Lovely beyond words! I have been here twice, both times with my trusty camera to capture nature. The grounds are stunning and offer many different types of trees and flowers. Entry is free and the grounds are perfect for a stroll. I took over 500 photos of the scenery and was amazed and the flora. The gardens are tranquil and it is the perfect spot for a walk, photography, or to learn about history of the property. A must see for all! Parking has never been an issue for me and the entrance offers maps of the grounds. Make sure to read the rules and be respectful of the land.

Lynn R.

Yelp
Our daughter had an outdoor wedding there by the reflecting pond and two enormous trees. it was simply gorgeous. We brought folding chairs for maybe 20 people and they had a lovely ceremony with an unitarian minister that each person who came gave a flower to add to the bride's bouquet. Then the groom tied the flowers together with a long ribbon and the ceremony just was so lovely. After they took a photo of the two ON a low hanging branch before we all left for a family & friend's gathering at the new couple's home.

Yelp
I fell completely and utterly in love with Aiken in the Hopeland Gardens. Beautiful, seemingly effortless stately gardens make for a wonderful stroll and a chance to enjoy a variety of plants and landscaping. The historic nature of the site only adds to its impressiveness. In moments after entering, this became one of my most favorite places on earth. I spent nearly two hours wandering there today -- first thing on a gray Saturday morning, I had the place mostly to myself. I lingered in the labyrinth, moseyed around the lakes, poked around the Thoroughbred Hall of Fame. Those who know me, know that I don't unplug easily. Hopeland Gardens was a deep sigh of relief in my stress-filled life. The sights, the smells... despite being seconds from a busy road and my busy life, the Gardens worked their magic on me.
google avatar

Jewels C.

Yelp
This is a beautiful, peaceful place located in the heart of Aiken's Winter Colony/Historic District. On a clear, brisk fall day or in the spring you can enjoy a walk or even a picnic inside of the Gardens. At Christmas the city of Aiken has lights all over the Gardens - they are lovely! If you choose to do this at Christmas, they usually have a trolley that will take you there from Citizens Park. Starting in the spring there are concerts and special events (such as Aiken Civic Ballet Company) that perform on Mondays. Also, in the warm months, they have read alouds in the Gardens for younger children. Hopelands is also a pretty place to get married (my sister did). If you are especially a visitor to Aiken, you should visit it most definitely.
google avatar

Darlene B.

Yelp
Having grew up in Aiken, this is by far my favorite park ever! It is like a scene from the Secret Garden! It is perfect in all seasons, I am bias on spring because I had my wedding pictures taken here some 15 years ago. The family and I shot some family reunion pictures a couple of years ago. I am looking forward to being in Aiken during the Christmas season because the holiday lights in the park are gorgeous!
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
What a wonder. We spend hours being mindful here. My four year old and I enjoy walking, tree climbing, turtle/coi/tadpole watching, story time, and concerts in Hopeland throughout the year. One of the top 5 things in Aiken!
google avatar

Tonya H.

Yelp
Lovely place. And alot bigger than we thought. It needs little up keep, looks like it was once a grand place but the staff has let it go some. But it was still a nice romantic walk for us.

Chassidy C.

Yelp
Definitely it is something to see and enjoy. Taking the kids out there to get an good fresh breeze and to go walking. We enjoy ourselves when we go there all the time.
google avatar

Charlie D.

Yelp
From the outside a serpentine brick wall separates busy Whiskey Rd from the splendors of this park. Enter through Dupree Rd. Beautiful brick pathways meander through camellias, magnolias, azaleas and various other southern plants. Fish pond, complete with lily pads. A stage and a labyrinth, gazebos, ducks, swinging benches.. The only reason i give this glorious park four stars is their pea soup pond where the ducks live. clean it up. water is not naturally this color, but i just avoided it, not difficult to do.
google avatar

Cris T.

Yelp
Was a great place to have a picnic with family and to enjoy nature. The scenery is the greatest and the stores around it make it easily convenient.

Cheryl M.

Yelp
Hopelands Gardens is a great place for families and singles, alike. The paths are well marked; the 'maze' is 'amazing' and great fun for everyone; the Thoroughbred Musuem is very informative. during the summer, they have live performances at the 'lake' - just bring something to sit on and (maybe) something to eat and have a great picnic with entertainment! Just another of Aiken's Pluses!
google avatar

Kristen W.

Yelp
I love this little sanctuary in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Whiskey Road. I go here often when I am stressed out to just relax or go for a walk. I always bring visitors to town here so that they can experience the uniqueness and historical facts of this place. It is truly a beautiful escape from the realities of the world. Wear walking shoes or shoes that you don't mind getting a little dirty because of the gravel walkways (not a place to wear heels because I twisted my ankle once on the walkway).

Bonnie W.

Yelp
Always love strolling through the gardens! Aiken is absolutely a wonderful place, this is one of our hidden gems.
