The Hörnlihütte was our hiking destination. We spent all day trekking up from Zermatt, mot knowing exactly what to expect here. After a grueling trudge up, we arrived to a newly finished deck area, and a very clean and modern looking restaurant/hotel.
The receptionist up front was very friendly, and explained that it was her first day on the job. Cool place to work! We bought a cappuccino, a candy bar, and a powerade for an obscene amount of Franc. She explained that everything was helicoptered up. Makes sense. We were wondering what kind of burly mountain men were hauling this stuff up. Prices made total sense after we learned this.
We wandered out into the dining room, and had a seat at a table overlooking the Alps. Truly a great place to relax before heading down. I can't imagine it's cheap to stay the night. The receptionist checked in on us, and kindly took our photo.
What a place, though. It's a great destination (and hardly a "hut"), but if you're going up there for the coffee, don't expect perfection. Also, there's a 20 Franc minimum for using a card. You don't have to buy much to hit that.
