These Are the 12 Best Off-the-Beaten-Path Hotels in Japan - AFAR

"A traditional tatami ryokan in the Kitayuzawa Onsen district of Date that serves as a relaxed base for exploring Mount Horohoro and shrine-dotted Lake Toya. The steep-gabled, creaky-floored property offers both indoor bedrock onsen and outdoor rotenburo, plus recreational facilities such as a tennis court, putting green, sauna, and fitness classes. The nightly buffet—included with stays—is elaborate and high quality, featuring crab legs, shabu shabu, onsen eggs, tempura, DIY hibachi grills, and house-made tofu." - Adam H. Graham

This is typical Japanese style hotel. Who likes such style it will.be great place to stay. Very friendly staff, always welcome and happy to help. The breakfast and then dinner are Japanese buffet with excellent food. Big bonus is Onsen in the hotel, this is game changer when you stay in the winter. There are 2 Ski resorts 40-50 min drive. I am waiting to come back again.

This place had the best Onsen ever, indoor and out, like a dozen pools and its open 24/7 meaning if you go past midnight you can drink beer in there!!! There is also no staff past 10pm and not a single CCTV camera, I could have gone door to door and murdered everyone and then fled into the night lol The hotel itself is old with dirty hallways but who cares, its a good retro feel, the rooms are good enough, nothing fancy, but the entire location is completely unlocked so you can wander and explore every inch of the place. The buffet is average, 3/5 at best, though you wont go hungry and can eat your fill and the selection is still more than good enough, they also have these grilled whole fish sticks with salt that was extra yummy!! but no bacon and eggs for breakfast which always disappoints!! Would 100% go back, cheaper than other places and good for a room party or a place to lay low, regroup.

The entire staff was extremely kind and helpful (front desk, restaurant, tempura chef, cleaning, etc) - and always did their best even though we did not speak well Japanese. The food was very diverse and excellent : we stayed for 5 days and didn’t get bored. Several local sourced ingredients. The onsen were massive - with a lot of available spots every day. Thanks a million

Stayed 1 night on November 29 in Japanese-Style Room 👍🏽Pros: - Free shuttle bus to and for Sapporo station - A variety of complimentary tea bags in the lobby - Public bath is awesome! There are 7 kinds of baths. My favorite one is the open bath, where I bathed when it was snowing. What a extraordinary experience. - Dinner and breakfast are buffet style. Many options and food is yum. - Some reviews mentioned that the facilities/room seemed old, but I found the vintage Japanese-Style room comfortable and great. I really enjoyed the stay! - There are 2 massage chairs next to public bath. 👎🏽Cons: - Not many staffs speak English so it's a bit difficult to communicate. It took a while for the front desk staff to find our bookings. - Private bath is not worth it. It's a waste of money. - Needs to put up signs about the etiquette of using public bath. When I took a shower in the public bath, the Korean group all showered while standing and kept splashing. They chatted loudly and shouted at each other. One of them even kicked water in the bath......

All Staffs are friendly. Communication with staffs in English needs Google translation. Onsen is normal, but a long walk from room. Dinner is great so is Breakfast. Good selection of Japanese food.

Wonderful staff, nice clean and comfortable traditional Japanese room, outdoor and indoor hot spring, sauna and a cold tub, plus dinner and breakfast are included. It’s a bit off the beaten path but not too far, definitely worth it.

Because we were a party of five, our options were quite limited in looking for something reasonably priced with good quality. Many accommodations only take up to 4 people per room. 湯元 ホロホロ山荘 has good sized Japanese rooms to take all five of us.||||I started to check for place right next to the lake, but better ones are very expensive and often, their meals aren't as well rated. 湯元 ホロホロ山荘 achieves a good balance.||||Rooms are spacious and clean. Meals are buffet style, with a help-yourself-barbecue. Varieties not amazing, but food quality and freshness commendable. The onsen is quite big for a mid-sized hotel. It has the usual sauna, outdoor onsen and indoor variations. || ||The hotel has a free shuttle to another onsen, but we didn't go. Although it's not next to the lake, it's just a short drive away. ||||It's not a place to wow a guest, but I would recommend staying here if you don't want to pay too much for a lakeside accommodation.
