Horse and Groom Free House, Food and Rooms

Absolutely delicious meal, beautiful venue and friendly staff, though the service could have been a bit quicker given it was a Monday night and not especially busy. We had the fish pie and the ribs for our mains and they were both excellent, then for dessert, my other half had the rose cheesecake which he thoroughly enjoyed, while I had the white chocolate mousse special, which was divine. Not the cheapest meal for 2 but I'm sure we'll be back for a special occasion.

We have been here before and decided on a last Chichister trip before Christmas. All was great, but we had some plumbing issues: this is where a good hotel shows its colours. The staff bent over backwards to help us, even nursing the errant boiler overnight to ensure that the heating functioned before the plumber arrived. And such nice people: they deserve to do well!

Only commenting on the restaurant / food as we didn't stay. Would have liked to give a 4.5 here as it wasn't quite 5 star but better than 4. Landed on a 5 as everyone in the party had a good meal overall. Excellent atmosphere and dog friendly after we had been for a nice walk. Good selection of food and wine on the menu. Mine was the tuna steak which was very well cooked and nice sauce. Only let down were the potatoes which we a bit al dente. Definitely recommend dropping in if you're in the area

"We dropped into the Horse & Groom last night, and as it turned out, it was an excellent choice. Right from the entrance, you are greeted by a horse statue and various equestrian paintings. However, I knew for sure I was in the right place when I spotted the Rolling Stones display, filled with articles and old newspaper clippings under the headline: “Stones: a Strong, Sweet smell of incense.” Bias aside, anyone who loves the Stones can’t be a bad person! But we came to eat, and we arrived hungry. The dining area is a cozy, welcoming space that radiates a sense of family warmth. Everything is tasteful and fits together perfectly—someone clearly has a great eye for detail. Dany, the front-of-house manager, welcomed us with respectful kindness. We let ourselves be guided by his recommendations, and there wasn’t a single bite of disappointment. Chef Luke truly outdid himself, from the starter all the way to the dessert. In my opinion, the whole experience is worth far more than its 4-star AA rating. I highly recommend this place; no one leaves here unsatisfied. Respect!"

4 of us had sunday lunch on th 15th of Feb 2026. we were served primarel by Taylor who at the end of the meal declared that it was his first day working there. Which surprized me as he was so proffessional and attentive. the whole experiens was amazing making a perfect Birthday treat. thanks Taylor

Superb food, drinks, hospitality and rooms - Highly recommended. Adam, Dan & their team ensured we had a very enjoyable stay. Very warm welcome on arrival from Cristina, and from all others throughout our stay. Great meal, even with the majority of the restaurant booked for a party. The team were very helpful accommodating our bikes too. We will be back

The owners have no respect for vegans. They say they can't cater to vegans as it's too difficult, AKA we don't care about your choice to value animals' lives. Needless to say, we and our friends won't be going back. Very sad and disappointing 😞

Everything about the Horse and Groom was a 5 star experience. We came upon it while driving and so glad we decided to stop. It is incredibly well decorated, has a garden area with lots of green and the service was great. The food we had so so good: the steak was soft and tender and the Pie of the day so tasty, perfect gravy and mash. They have a kids menu too! Really recommend!!!
