This place really is the quintessential English countryside experience. It's both a pub and has a few rooms. We stayed in one of the rooms during our visit to the Cotswolds. I liked the location bc it was in one of the smaller villages, which is mainly residents. In fact I think the H&G is the only business in Bourton-on-the Hill. The "hill" part is no joke. It's midway up a steep hill with a great view of the fields and meadows below. However, it's only two miles to the larger and more commercial Moreton in Marsh, where there's a whole array of restaurants, markets, cafes, and inns. It's a good walking distance if you're up to it, which we did a few times. However, if walking isn't your thing, you may find that having a car is easier if you do want to stay here, as the public transit is limited; though we were able to figure out the bus schedule and took a bus to Bourton on the Water, which is toted as one of the must see villages of the Cotswolds. The H&G is about 50 yards to the bus stop; however, the bus only comes 3 times a day, so you really have to time things right. The inn is also about 1/2 mile to the Bourton House and Batsford Arboretum and falconry. We checked out the falconry, and it is excellent. There is a nice garden behind the inn where you can enjoy a drink and snacks on a nice day. We ate dinner at the pub both nights we stayed, and the food is world class. (Note if you stay here and do not have a car, you will likely need to have dinner here, as the last bus from Moreton is around 5:00). The menu is mainly traditional English food with more modern execution. I had a lamb one night and steak the next night, and really enjoyed them. Also the asparagus and pea soup is wonderful. Being a pub they also have an extensive drink selection, as you can imagine. The room we stayed in was nice, spacious and it had windows that opened up onto the garden. However, it seemed a little worn through. The coffee service provided in the room was a bit dirty and some of the furniture was chipped. The light in the bathroom is turned on via a long string that hangs down from the ceiling. The string broke the first night we were there and was not fixed after we let the staff know. So we ended up having to pull in a light from the bedroom to use in the bathroom. It also got a bit stuffy in the room, even with all the windows open, and no fan was provided. The cleaning service also failed to restock toilet paper for the second night we were there, and it was starting to run low. Breakfast was included in the room price, and was quite good. They have a small buffet of cereals, yogurt, and pastries, juice and milk that you help yourself to, as well as hot dishes and coffee made to order. Overall, I enjoyed staying here and visiting the Cotswolds, though I feel the quality of the establishment as a restaurant is higher than the quality as a lodging.
