Sri Lanka Has a New Walking Trail With Wild Forests and Centuries-old Wellness Retreats — What to Know

"A windswept highland plateau ringed by cloud forest, notable for wildlife encounters (a troop of swinging 'bear monkeys' was observed) and dramatic viewpoints; a prominent feature is the steep switchback known as the Devil’s Staircase, which provides sweeping overlooks of the lush Udaweriya Valley." - Erin Vivid Riley

7 hikes in Sri Lanka for enjoying its lush landscapes - SilverKris

"A cool, high-altitude plateau above 2,000m characterized by thick forests, bright-red rhododendrons and sambar deer; the popular, easy 9.5km circuit starts early to avoid midday clouds and leads to the dramatic World’s End cliff with an 800m drop and the scenic Baker’s Falls, with options to extend to nearby atmospheric waterfalls." - Zinara Rathnayake

Horton Plains National Park is beautiful no matter the weather. On sunny days the views are amazing — open grasslands, cliffs, and World’s End. The drive itself is really scenic too. If you want to see World’s End without mist, make sure to start your hike before 6 am.

“An unforgettable experience! Horton Plains is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved nature reserves in Sri Lanka. From the moment you enter, you're surrounded by cool mountain air, peaceful silence, and stunning scenery. The 9.5 km circular trail is perfect for nature lovers and offers a mix of grasslands, cloud forests, and waterfalls. The highlight, of course, is World’s End — a dramatic cliff with panoramic views that will take your breath away. On clear mornings, you can see all the way to the south coast. Baker’s Falls is another gem along the trail, with refreshing mist and a picture-perfect view. You’ll likely spot wildlife too — like sambar deer, birds, and unique plants found nowhere else. The path is well-marked and not too difficult, but wear good shoes and bring water. It’s also important to go early to avoid the crowds and get the clearest views. Truly a magical place that combines adventure, peace, and natural beauty in one journey. Highly recommended for hikers, photographers, and anyone wanting to connect with nature!” 🌿🏞️📸

The Horton Plains Nelu flower season is truly a magical time in Sri Lanka. Once in several years, the plains come alive with a sea of delicate purples and blues, covering the misty grasslands in an unforgettable bloom. Surrounded by cool winds, cloud-kissed peaks, and untouched wilderness, walking through the Nelu-covered trails feels like stepping into a living painting. It’s a rare natural event that touches the heart and soul — a quiet reminder of nature’s hidden wonders waiting to be discovered.

Horton Plains National Park is absolutely breathtaking no matter the weather. I’ve been here before on an overcast, misty days, and it had its own magical, mysterious vibe. This time, I took the train on a sunny day, and it was a whole different experience. Without the mist, I could finally see the full extent of the stunning landscapes. Endless grasslands, dramatic cliffs, and the incredible views from World’s End. The drive itself was beautiful and set the tone for the adventure. Highly recommend visiting in different weather conditions. Each one tells a different story.
