Nature and Parks in Amsterdam

"One of the world’s oldest botanical gardens has roots that go back to 1638 when it was established as a medicinal herb garden in East Amsterdam. Four centuries later, more than 6,000 different indigenous and non-native trees and plants — many unknown in Europe until they were imported from all over the world by Dutch East India Company traders — flourish in its lush greenhouses and outdoor gardens. Hundreds of butterflies fly around in one greenhouse while a giant hothouse creates conditions for three different tropical climates. Visit at dusk to witness a 154-year-old lily open its flower. Even if plants aren’t your passion, Hortus’s airy café, The Orangery, is a cozy spot for lunch or drinks with a large outside terrace that opens to the garden." - MATADOR_NETWORK

For the hype, I did not find it lived up to it. It has variety but not as largely spoken of. The Asian gardens are the loveliest and tranquil. The old trees truly awesome. Unless botany is your thing, or in need of some warmth in the cold seasons, I was disappointed.

Google
Nice and offers a lot of information to those who also read the texts in the greenhouse. You can easily spend 1-2 hours here and it's kids friendly. They have a few specimens of the world's biggest flower and they open in different times. Cute memorabilia in the museum shop.

One of my favourite places in Leiden. Do see the green house with tropical and carnivorous plants. Lovely place to study plants or just to explore new species. Keep an eye on the page, they have fun events with music, food, and theatre.

An absolute must visit if you’re ever in the Netherlands. Such a well-made experience with informative stands everywhere and rich history. And if you get tired, there’s a nice cafe where you can have a coffee with a cake.

Yesterday I visited the botanical garden in Leiden for the first time, and I was genuinely excited, my expectations were high. Sadly, the experience didn’t live up to them. Many of the plants in the garden looked neglected. I noticed several with brown or dying leaves, signs of pests, and overall poor health. It felt like a lot of the collection needs more attention and care. One of the main reasons I went was to see their Hoya collection, which I had heard great things about. To my surprise, there was no sign of it. When I asked a staff member, they told me the Hoyas are now kept in a non-public area because some visitors had previously stolen cuttings. If anyone wants to see them, they need to email in advance and explain why. While I understand the need for protection, I personally don’t think this is fair to genuine plant lovers. There are better ways to manage this issue without disappointing visitors who travel a long way to visit, especially when nothing about this is mentioned on their website or during the online booking process. It was a letdown, to say the least. Hopefully, they’ll consider making changes, because the potential of this place is huge, it just needs more transparency and plant care.

Lovely place, well worth a visit. Lots of stunning gardens and plants. Delicious, well priced cafe and lots of super clean toilets too. Fantastic location, with large car park only a short walk way and the city centre just across the water.

Absolutely beautiful place with a rich history and diverse selection of plants. An absolute must visit if you're visiting Leiden. There's a lot of amazing events that are always a blast to go to. There's always something new in bloom so it's worth going any time of the year.

More than 30 years ago I saw the Hortus every time I walked out of my apartment and loved its peaceful green beauty in the heart of the city. Now I have returned with my children and it is even more beautiful, with expanded gardens full of variety and care. A wonderful place to enjoy nature and tranquility for all generations.

Yelp
We absolutely enjoyed our visit here! The entrance fee is 7.50 and well worth it. Take time and walk through every greenhouse. You'll see amazing plants. After the greenhouses, walk through the gardens. There is a Japanese garden and a koi pond as well. A definite visit. If you enjoy plants and are looking for relaxing day. Yelp challenge #25

Yelp
Hortus Botanicus of Leiden is the Netherlands' oldest botanical garden as well as one of the oldest in the world. It was built in 1587 though the University of Leiden for the benefit of medical students. Its first prefect Carolus Clusius, a Flemish doctor and pioneering botanist, helped formally create this botanical garden. He is also known to have laid the foundations of Dutch tulip breeding and the bulb industry today.

Yelp
I love botanical gardens, and on my trip to Leiden today I went to the Universiteit Leiden Botanical Garden which is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands that opened in1590. I didn't see many rare crazy flowers or plants, but this place has SO much potential. They have a few green houses for tropical plants, a rose garden, dry cactus area, a Japanese garden section that was closed off today, orchid plants, and many different tree types. I think for scientists and students this is an interesting place to visit, but as part of the general public today I was looking for a real 'wow' moment and didn't get it. It only cost 2€ with student I.D. to get in, otherwise it's still only 6€. They also have a store which sells flower bulbs and other garden accessories, and a cute cafe onsite that was closed today (Sunday). I saw on their website that they sometimes have plant events, and recently hosted one for daffodils. If you are a student with a museumkaart, you get in free, and I can imagine this being a nice peaceful place to study. Worth checking out in Leiden, good idea to check the website for special events.

Yelp
Very pretty, well-organized and maintained botanical garden. It's the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands and features many things worth seeing, like the giant Victoria lily, carnivorous plants and a Japanese garden. Its fields and benches are great for relaxing on a sunny day, so it's definitely worth buying a yearly subscription to the garden if you're a local!
