These Are the 12 Best Off-the-Beaten-Path Hotels in Japan - AFAR

"A clifftop coastal getaway overlooking a chain of rocky islets in the Sea of Japan, offering water-view rooms (some with private balcony onsen), tatami mats, and washi wall art that echoes local sunsets. Guests are treated to nightly Kagura ceremonial Shinto dances recounting the origin myth of the nearby Izumo Taisha on the sea-facing stage, and can easily explore the nearby fishing village of Hinomisaki with its sea-weathered shrine. Kaiseki dinners showcase regional seafood and specialties such as Matsuba crab miso, local uni–topped sesame tofu, and Kobako crab gratin." - Adam H. Graham

I was staying in this hotel with my friend to celebrate birthday. The staff recognized that it was my birthday on the day we checked in and congratulate me. Not only that, the staff even gave us photo album to commemorate our stay in KAI Izumo. I am truly amazed by the warm gestures from the staffs. Food was excellent and the onsen is also nice with the view of Japan Sea. Too bad that the access is quite limited to this hotel, as public transportation is not available every hours going there. We are satisfied staying in this hotel.

The service rendered was above standard. It’s a perfect place to enjoy both sunrise and sunset. It has the best geographical location. Soaking in the onsen during sunset or sunrise is a heavenly pleasure!

I think many of these reviews are unfair. The Kai Izumo has a beautiful facility in a spectacular place. The staff are friendly and capable. It is a quirky place, without many amenities of a big resort hotel. The decor is minimal (but elegant) and breakfast and dinner are served on a fixed schedule. The kaiseki meals we enjoyed were excellent. It is in a remote spot, intentionally. A car is the best means of access. Rental cars are easily available at the airport or the Izumoshi train station. Quiet, simple, and simply beautiful.

>Overall the meal and activities are good, and the view is astonishing < In addition, I want to praise a waiter. His name is Sho. He has just been working for 4 months. He is our dinner waiter and is also the actor who plays 神樂. He is very enthusiastic explanation of the dishes, made my dinner unforgettable! Hospitality is not perfect. Take luggage as an example. When I went to Fu Fu Nikko, I drove to the door and they were very attentive to help you pick up all the luggage. They also did their best to help all the luggage when you checked out. Maybe we have to go to Hoshino to have this kind of service? -Facility- The door of the balcony is SUPER HARD to open, and the slipper is a bit hard to wear but maybe they want to keep that Japanese style, and I hope the jacket can have some pocket, or put small bag in room than we can carry key and small stuff at ease We book a lighthouse room, and were assigned a room with a terrible view. If you been arranged to the first few rooms, you can have a better view.

This Kai is in a beautiful spot at Hinomisaki, overlooking the Japan Sea. The decor is elegant, very minimal, and the rooms are comfortable and quiet. Food is entirely Japanese kaiseki style, with mostly local ingredients, and we found it excellent. Staff are friendly young people. The guests when we were there were almost all Japanese. The onsens are small but pretty nice (not superb like some Hoshinoya facilities, but certainly quite acceptable) and has a nice view out over the coast and the ocean. Major drawback is that it is 10 km or so from Izumo Taisha up a very narrow, twisting road. Bus service is not good and taxis were impossible to find during our visit— we ended up renting a car, an unexpected expense. And as with other Hoshino resorts this one has quirks. No coffee, for one, except at a vending machine outside the hotel grounds. Aside from the onsen, an evening traditional dance performance, and the wonderful meals, there’s really nothing to do at the hotel. But that is part of the draw, it is quiet, with a Zen like simplicity we enjoyed. And of course Izumo Taisha and the nearby Hinomasaki-ji are spectacular. We had some difficulty communicating with the hotel staff by email before arrival. Once there, no problems.

This hot spring inn is a part of the Hoshino Resorts, located in Hinomisaki, the westernmost tip of the Shimane Peninsula, the birthplace of mythology. There are two types of rooms: those facing the ocean, where you can watch the sunrise, and those facing the Hinomisaki Lighthouse, where you can see the sun setting into the sea. The interior is made with Sekishu washi paper, a traditional craft of Shimane, and staff will perform Iwami Kagura, giving you the opportunity to experience local culture. It is about a 20-minute drive from Izumo Taisha Shrine, making it a good base

My wife and I had been to several Kai in the past years. I truly had a wonderful experience in Kai Izumo, in particular the service from Matsumi, a youngster who speaks fluent English. She is polite and friendly. Room has beautiful seaview, food is excellent. Just can’t be much happier, more than words can say.
