Hostal Camino de Hierro

We were staying in the hotel opposite but dined here. They had a good selection of wines and cocktails (see the photos). We were given a homemade soup for a starter, those of us who ordered beef were asked if we wanted it rare, medium or well done, but all of us received the same (see the photo!). In any case, it was good. The chocolate dessert was also very good. Service was good and for the price it was nice.

This hotel could not be better placed, in the main square or a buzzy interesting town full of life. When we arrived the member of staff who checked us in wasn't really interested. The first room we were given wasn't suitable and we asked for a different room which seemed to be a major hassle for him but in reality, they had a number of spare rooms and we chose the one with the big bed rather than the twin we were allocated initially. Unlike almost anywhere where else we stayed the rooms had a coffee machine for boiling water and they provided sachets of coffee, the problem was the machine didn't work. I went down to request a replacement but it was at least an hour and the intervention of my partner who was really fed up to get a replacement. We also pointed out that the tap in the bathroom didn't turn off so they brought the maintenance man who spent an eternity sorting it out. Unfortunately, we didn't know then that we would not manage to get hot water out of the shower that night or the following morning. The hotel is an old building so it might be expected but it was really noisy from above below and all around. On the bright side the breakfast was excellent and the morning staff friendly. We were lucky we only had one night at this hotel. The poorest experience of our 3 week trip in Cuba

We had passed by several times and decided this should be where we would have dinner. Unfortunately it got windy about the time we sat down and the staff shuttered the doors closed. Attractive room and it would be nice to sit inside and what the street activity outside on an afternoon or less windy evening. The menu is small but reasonably priced. We wanted a light meal and ordered a plate of the Catalan shrimp to share. Neither the menu nor our server explained that the shrimp were served with rice and so we ordered a bowl of plane rice to soak up the sauce. We were served 2 plates of shrimp instead of 1 plate AND we got rice with both servings and an extra bowl of rice. This was WAY more food than we wanted. The shrimp were nicely cooked although the sauce bore absolutely no resemblance to the tomato sauce we were expecting, it tasted like a chicken stock base and looked exactly like the gravey that was on the chicken and mashed potatoes at the table next to us! Service was prompt, although the plates that arrived weren't what was ordered or expected. We waited forever for our bill and had to finally ask for it long after plates had been cleared and drinks finished. Nice location but I would give this place a pass and recommend others do the same. ||||Please note that this review is for the RESTAURANT ONLY. The hotel comes up easily enough on Tripadvisor but the restaurant is more challenging. We did not stay at the hotel, we ate a meal in the restaurant only.

Supposed to have been restored quite recently but appears to have gone downhill since as the room we had looked very tired. No chair skimpy sheets on bed and rather dodgy shower in the bathroom. There was no glass window only shutters so we either had darkness or all the noise from outside. Breakfast was adequate(just) but when we tried to have dinner half the items on the already small menu were off and so we went out to a Restaurant. Good situation nice outdoor tables for people watching. Poor by European standards but just about average for Cuba

This hotel is not rated well here and I can see why. My travel agent assured me it was good because of its location and it's definitely in the centre of town. We had a "good" room which faced the square. This meant we could access wifi from our room which was good. However the room has no windows! You can open the wooden door to the balcony but it was so hot outside so we had to keep the air conditioning in. Some people complained here about noise from the square. I can see how that could be a problem as the door is very thin, however it rained the night we stay so the square was empty! Double bed only has one pillow on it. I took this downstairs and asked for another and was taken to another room where that took the one pillow off that bed and gave it to me. Lucky the hotel wasn't full! ||Breakfast was a set menu. It was okay. Some fruit to start then some toasted bread with some cold cuts and cheese. Tea, coffee and juice was included but I asked for a water and they said I'd need to pay extra for water! I was dumbfounded. Santa Maria across the road is owned by the same people. At least it had windows.

It's a historic old building, and in the center of things. But the room is dark and the walls are grimy. The hot water was more an aspiration then a reality, and the bathroom was dark and unwelcoming. The walls in the common areas, especially the main staircase, are covered with dead swatted insects, dead bugs in webs, and other indeterminate marks and scars. The rooms look out over the street and, during the early evening it was fun to watch the nightlife and hear the live music coming up from the lobby of the hotel. But come bedtime, even with the windows closed, the noise was really a problem. It was not a good choice, and we complained to our travel company.

I seem not to be able to find an entry for the restaurant only, so here my review anyway. We have not stayed at the hotel, but have had a nice dinner at their restaurant. There is a front part with a view of the plaza and the church. Food was prepared fresh, was good and a nice presentation and plenty. The mojito they served was very good and the service was friendly.

Nice hotel and very handy for the best sites of the City. Our room overlooked a busy part of the city so wasn't the quietest.||Breakfast is served in the area that doubles as a popular restaurant with outside seating.||One of the few hotels where we got a double bed despite having booked one at every hotel.||If you want a quiet room you need to be away from the front of the hotel.
