Where to Stay in Oaxaca on Your Trip (Updated 2025)
"On the western edge of downtown and just a 10-minute walk from the main square, this hostel offers one of the best free breakfasts in town. The beds have orthopedic mattresses, all dorms have lockers for secure storage, and there’s a shared kitchen if you want to cook. Staff organize regular activities so it’s easy to meet other travelers." - Matthew Kepnes
"I found Hostal Central to be warm and welcoming, offering one of the best free breakfasts in town, a great downtown location, and exceptionally friendly staff who consistently go above and beyond. The property has cozy orthopedic mattresses, a shared kitchen, a chill common area with Netflix, organized events like communal dinners, cooking classes and mezcal tastings, and lockers for every bed—making it an affordable option for private rooms while still being social." - Matthew Kepnes
I stayed in the 3 person dorm and it was so lovely. They are on top of the cleaning which I appreciate. All of the staff make you feel like family. Breakfast is a great way to meet everyone else and plan your day. The free activities offered are intentional and fun. A short walk away from all of the main sights. Highly recommend if you are looking for a social but not party hostel. Muchas gracias!!

Great place! My partner and I stayed here in a 4 share dorm! Dorm was comfy and facilities were well maintained!
We really enjoyed the activities the staff put on including a free mezcal tasting!! Staff were all so helpful and kind! The activities were great to make the hostel more fun and help you meet the other guests but didn't make it feel like a party hostel! Perfect

One of the best hostels I’ve stayed at! The staff and volunteers are fantastic, and they host daily events to get to know other guests and show us around Oaxaca. The location is a bit farther out, and it’s recommended to take a taxi if you come back late at night. Amazing daily breakfasts, a beautiful courtyard to hang out, and a wonderful warm homey feeling. Would love to come back!

Absolutely amazing hostal. I loved the vibe, I loved the people whose chose it, I can’t believe how many friend and laid back people I met. Kristel the manager makes perfect fun events everyday, and we ended up at a salsa bar one night after cocktail event. Best breakfast and a we eat together vibe because no one wanted to miss it. I loved the volunteers, Mel and Caitlin! Not a party hostel, but you might meet someone you can’t help but party with 😌

Excellent hostel, probably the best I've ever stayed in. The rooms are spacious and there is a small partition between each bed to give a sense of privacy. There is no lock on the bedroom door but that wasn't an issue as everyone keeps their stuff in the lockers. There are free towels, and the rooms are cleaned daily to a high standard and they make your bed. There is an excellent breakfast provided daily from 8.30-10am, different meal each day - I particularly liked the molletes. There is a real sense of community in the hostel as everyone eats breakfast together and there are great evening activities which are free of charge and which most people attend. I didn't attend any of the daytime activities as I had plans but heard good things about them. I will be back!

What a beautiful concept for a hostel... create connective experiences for folks travelling alone or in groups alike. From a shared meal at breakfast (which despite the simple descriptions, are absolutely gorgeous) to plenty of organized free or economically priced activities, you can't help but make a few new friends. It's easy to get sucked into all the organized activities so independent DIY travelers should prepare to battle a little bit of FOMO! While we did most of our activities on our own, we loved the connective environment. This is NOT a party hostal, but there are definitely opportunities for late night outings to the salsa club for night owls. And for those who love to cook, ask at the reception for a sharp knife to prep with... the reality is that Oaxaca's food scene is so good and cheap and the number of free meals in the evening that the hostel offers makes even the most avid cooks like us stay away from the kitchen!
