Rupert Thomson Had The Worst Two Days of His Life in the Amazon

"The other place is a hotel on the Costa Brava, north of Barcelona, it’s called Hostal Empuries and it’s just a small hotel on a bay. It’s the only building on this little bay and was built for archeologists to stay at, because two miles inland is a huge Graeco-Roman ruin with mosaic floors and broken columns."

Hostal Spa Empúries, a Design Boutique Hotel L'Escala, Spain

"Empúries is set in a restored building overlooking the Mediterranean from a secluded beach. It is located nearby Empuries Archeological Site and is a 5-minute drive from L’Escala, on the Costa Brava. The charming rooms at Hostal Empúries all come with a work desk and include en suite bathrooms. Some rooms are equipped with satellite TV channels and many offer a terrace with great views of Portitxol Beach. The property has 2 restaurants: one serving gourmet Mediterranean food and the other offering a range of dishes in an informal environment. Hostal Empúries has a spa with a pool, saunas, a gym and shower circuit. Bicycles rented at the 24-hour reception desk." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

I loved the hotel and the staff, but I was disappointed with the restaurant. Although it overlooks a stunning cove and has a beautiful interior, the food doesn’t live up to the setting and feels more like a chain restaurant. The salad used pre-mixed lettuce, the clams were poor, and the rice was overly seasoned with low-quality ingredients. This was surprising given the area’s excellent seafood and produce. Service was also quite slow for the tasting menu. I’d recommend the beachside xiringuito instead. The restaurant is fine for a drink, but not for dining.

Very nice hotel overall. Good cuisine and good service in Reception and Dining Room. Isham , in the bar and dining room was particularly welcoming. We chose a front room with a full sea view. It was lovely to leave the windows open at night and to hear the waves outside. However, the room was a little basic ..... no tissues and only one hard chair to sit on. It was within easy walking distance of both San Marti and L'Escala. Would we return ,... yes!

Beautiful hotel right on the beach. A place where you can stay and not leave for days with a beach bar, great restaurant, amazing breakfast, spa, pool and of course the beach a few steps away from the front door. ||Get a room with a balcony and sleep to the sound of the surf. The staff were super friendly and helpful. A bit of a walk into town but not onerous and you are close to the Roman ruins and the lovely medieval town of Sant Martí d'Empúries. ||Will definitely return.

I left this review on their internal feedback page and didn't even get a reply. - Your comments : We absolutely loved the hostal. Stunning location and has a really nice feel about it. But some of the staff let you down. The restaurant service was pretty bad. We had 2 issues with food containing egg when we were told they didn't to start with then I had to double check. My daughter has severe allergies and she could have been very ill had I not checked. We spent a lot of money staying for that week and some of the staff just completely ignored us. I had to keep going and asking to be served. Just wasn't what we expected at all. It's a shame because I have been coming to the area for over 30 years and finally bought my children to see it. But I don't think we will come back unless there is an improvement with their service skills.

Hostal Empuries is everything a hotel should be! Thoughtfully designed. Next to the Med., with wonderful seaside views from select rooms. Eco conscious. Friendly staff. Different lounge/social areas--the library, "Chimney room," another expansive lounge area, sofas at the front of the restaurant, outdoor terrace, Excellent restaurant. Peaceful setting next to the coastal boardwalk, a few minutes from the impressive Greco-Roman Ruins of Empuries. Couldn't ask for more!

Service very attentive, food is great, the menu has something for everyone. Breakfast is versatile, comfortable living room style area. Great spa and gym. The mattress in our room was too hard for us. No other complaints apart from that.

This was our third time at Hostal Empuries and whilst I cannot fault the hotel, we did have a concern. Check-in was fairly straightforward even though we arrived a little early. However, in the evening, upon trying to get a table in the restaurant at 8:00pm, we were told that it was full and that the earliest we could be seated would be at 9:30pm. It would have been advisable for the receptionist at check-in to have informed us that the restaurant would likely be busy that evening and that we should book a table as soon as possible. We were eventually seated at 9:45pm after making quite a fuss. The following day, we booked a table in the morning for 8:00pm; needless to say, the restaurant was only half-full.|We did notice that most of the staff (hotel and restaurant) were very young, late teens to early twenties. Training would appear to be what is missing for some of them. For example, one of the servers at our table had obviously never opened a bottle of wine with a corkscrew before - it was quite embarrassing (for him).

We spent 5 days here last month . The hotel is perfectly lovely but it is the location that makes it amazing . There's easy access to a beach in the front and other beautiful beaches are walking distance or a short ride in the 'tram' service ( 2.5 euros). The rooms a very nice and bright with a very beach cabin type decor . The staff a friendly . The only issue we had repeatedly was the room maid wouldn't replace our coffee so we had to keep asking . Also , one time we left our dog in the room and closed the wooden doors for his peace but the maid went in anyway while we were out . Dog friendly and the gym is fine for light workouts or stretching . Would definately return .

Yelp
I stayed here for one night so that I could visit the Ruins of Empuries. I did not have a reservation. I showed up in the late afternoon and the front desk person was very helpful, warm and professional. I booked a sea view room at a fair price. The room although slightly on the smaller size was well appointed. I thought the connection betweeen the bathroom and bedroom was fantastic. Basically a sliding door covers the space between the sink and the bedroom. With the door closed a mirror is above the bathroom sink. When it is open you have a full view through the bedroom and out the window to the sea. This is convenient from the bedroom side as it gives access to the sink. I did not take the breakfast at the hotel but the dining room looked spacious. The hotel as a wonderful room of cozy chairs and a mini library room. Ample tables outside along the sea with beautiful views. The hotel also sits along a pathway that follows the beach. Most convenient is the hotel is right next to the ruins. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Yelp
It's a cozy clean place. Not worth it. Food is not good and the service is extremely bad. Prepare to wait.
