Teatro Inka is a lovely little hotel in a colonial building in the historic centre of Cusco, just a few minutes walk from the Plaza de Armas. It's very reasonably priced, given its proximity to the centre of town.
I stayed there on several occasions, in two different rooms on the first floor. All the rooms overlook a pleasant central courtyard and, as such, have frosted windows. For some reason, it seems that the rooms on the ground floor have no carpet and no curtains, making them feel more cold to be in.
The rooms are fairly basic, but comfortable. Each room that I stayed in only had two electrical sockets, with one near the light switch and door and the other best the bed. The beds were very comfortable and had good thick covers which kept me at a perfect temperature through the night.
The bathrooms each had a shower that always had good pressure and hot water available. However, the sink taps were a different story. The first room had very low water pressure from the tap and almost stopped working after flushing the toilet, but I learned to wash my hands before flushing the toilet, so that wasn't such a problem.
But the other room had real problems with it's tap. I stayed for two nights and the water totally ran out several times during this time. The water pressure was better there, but it seems to come from a separate water tank that needed to be refilled regularly. I never had to wait for more than 5 to 10 minutes for this to happen and the guy that manages the desk at night was good enough to give me a bottle of water to brush my teeth with while I waited one night.
The staff at the hotel were very kind, especially Danghela Mariel, who remembered my name and the room that I stayed in predominantly and that I preferred to pay with VISA. She always made sure that I was comfortable and felt at home there. She told me where the nearest shops were and where I could buy fruit. She even came to tell me when the water tank had been refilled.
They have a small dining room to serve breakfast, but it wasn't cheap and I found cheaper places very nearby. There are cheap mini markets, restaurants and places to wash clothes within just a few minutes walk of the hotel. It's location is very convenient, and traffic noise is minimal there too.
They also provide bag storage there, even for a four day trek that I took to see Choquequirao and even though the hotel was full when I was due to return. They have a guy who watched over reception over night and who put my bag into storage when I had to leave at the very unreasonable hour of 4am. It's also very safe there, as they have a security door, so that not just anyone can wander in. You have to ring a bell and they unlock the door from reception.
So, that's the good news. But it's not all good. Here's the bad news. The hotel is surrounded in three sides by a girls' school. During the day, it's almost as if these girls are encouraged to scream. I really don't understand it. I've never heard so many girls screaming so often before. But this is during the day time, most of which I was out, exploring the city and it's surrounding attractions.
The real problem is in the early morning and late evening, when they seem to have assembly and the teachers use microphones and loud speakers to talk, sing, and play music. It really is very loud. It starts at 7:30am for an hour or so and again in the evening, up until as late as 9 or 10pm.
However, most people wake up at around that time anyway and don't go to sleep before that time in the evening, so it didn't stop me from sleeping. But I would really encourage the hotel to invest some money into getting some sound proofing to lessen this inconvenience for the guests.
I would also recommend that they provide places for the guests to hang towels in the bathroom and to put their shampoo and soap in the shower cubicles. One room had hooks for towels, but nowhere to put soap and shampoo and the other room had a place for shampoo and soap but nowhere to hang a towel.
Overall, I had a pleasant stay in this hotel and could happily recommend it.
