Hostel Monteverde Backpackers

We booked a room a few days in advance and when we got there, we came in the wrong entrance. The tool that owned the place contemplated on sending us back out and round up the hill. But it was by far easier to let us in this way. When common sense prevailed, he told us he was double booked and sent us on our way. He could have contacted us as we'd left an email address and phone number, but failed to act accordingly. It could have been 2am when we arrived... What would we have done then? Then he objected to our poor review on Hostelworld which he had removed. I didn't get chance to have a good look at the place so I can't comment on the inside. Outdoors was a bit of a $h1thole as they were working on something. Location was good. Staff, terrible.

Really good in terms of price/value. It’s really cheap, the beds are comfy and there even is breakfast included! :) I could watch many birds outside the kitchen window. The lady who prepares breakfast is absolutely lovely, though the owner was quite rude towards me, listening to my conversation I had with another guest and commenting harsh on it - it’s none of your business! The worst thing though is that there is an alcoholic staying on the floor in the “social space”, who seemed alright when sober in the morning but made me feel very unsafe once he was all high and drunk. Hope he gets his life back together. All over, I would recommend the hostel for its facilities but not the people.

Absolutely incredible and unforgettable experience. Alonso has great recommendations. I told him what I wanted to do during my stay and he booked everything including pickup right at the hostel door! I even paid less than I would have if I booked the activity online! I splurged and got a private room (only a little bit more than the dorms) the whole place was clean and cozy. Perfect. And free breakfast!! Also the housekeeper is an angel. Her and Alonso make a great team and really made my stay wonderful. Also super close to the supermarket and lots of great restaurants. Also will arrange transportation to and from the airport for an added fee. I could go on and on but the last thing I’ll say is that every day, all day long, there are different birds right outside the window of the kitchen!!

Location is pretty central and has a supermarket next door. Reception was incredibly helpful and friendly with your plans while staying in MV. The social space is widely used as well and you can see wildlife from the kitchen windows. Overall clean, cheap, & social.

Beautiful little hostel with amazing service! Alonso, is very helpful, kind and funny! He'll help you out with whatever you need. The hostel is centrally located, with a well equipped kitchen. Keep an eye out for the tree filled with birds by the kitchen! Amazing!! I highly recommend this hostel :)

Great hostel. They offer a lot of tours and activities. Alonso can help you with anything and the shower is the hottest and highest pressure during my travel through central america!

We had a booking on Hostelworld made months in advance, but upon showing up, the receptionist told us the price would be twice as much. I asked them why and that I have a valid booking with a different price. He said he would call the manager and that we could go to the beds in the meantime. All beds were taken. We informed the receptionist and he said to take care of it.||In the meantime, the manager Alonso showed up. He said he would only give us the room for twice the price. We refused of course and told him to honor the booking and that twice the price was insane for a dorm. He said to pay or cancel. I told him that I would not cancel, because I had already paid a deposit. He then told us to come back tomorrow? For what, so that he could mark us as no-show? The whole thing felt like a scam, especially since the receptionist had let it slip that this happened before. We refused to pay twice the price and to cancel ourselves, at which point he shouted at us to leave. We left the premises and easily found a private room for the price of a dorm somewhere else.||As such, I cannot recommend anyone to go to Monteverde Backpackers. The manager is ill-tempered and the whole thing felt like a scam. Don't be fooled by the cheap price online, they will try to make you pay more than you do elsewhere in town.

This is a late review but me and 3 friends stayed here in August of 2023. Truly one of our best experiences at a hostel. We had gotten a flat tire and the concierge notified and changed our tire for us while we got ready for our hike of the day. They also helped us book ziplining tours, recommended local hikes, and restaurants.
