Hostel Mostel

Reviewing from hostel world as they cancel bookings after staying to avoid bad reviews (I suspect). Really poor hostel. Lots of long term local residents - not necessarily a problem but doors are constantly left open and lots of smoking in the ensuit bathrooms at night. Guys would also urinate with the door open. Not the nicest when beds are literally 1m away from the door to the toilet. I did go to reception to notify them of the incidents but there was no one there. Showers - clean but I suspect that is from lack of use. Water in the shower is tepid at best. Good pressure however. Beds - Nice to have a curtain but they are very dusty. Bed sheets are not cleanest but do the job. Good to have automatic lockers. Location - cant get much better. Lots of direct tram links to around town from right on the doorstep. Cash only - yes they advertise this but come on... almost everywhere else accepts card. It just makes you think they are avoiding something. Reception - a hostel of this size really needs a reception that is open 24h. Overall I would not recommend, however the availability of decent hostels in Sofia is limited. Perhaps it is better in the summer but I can't comment on that.

Pretty good experience. The employee Julien was super cool and led an great bar crawl. We went to so many places that were invisible from the street but had amazing atmosphere inside. Thank you to him for letting me keep my luggage There while I was out for a day.

Such a beautiful hostel located in such a good a good area. The staff & volunteers are incredible and will always go above and beyond for all of their guests! I will definitely be back here again some day

From the moment we arrived, the experience was a DISASTER. We were greeted not with warmth, but by a shockingly rude staff member who, in an almost threatening tone, told us we had exactly five minutes to check an email they’d sent. Not the kindness you expect from a hostel, just plain rudeness. Those five minutes led to our “reallocation”, not to another room, but to an annex five minutes away from the hostel itself. If the hostel was bad, this annex was something out of a horror movie. The entrance was crumbling, the stairs dangerously neglected, and the room was a disgrace. I'll let the description speak for itself. There were hairs in every single bed (a clear sign the sheets hadn’t been properly cleaned). The bathroom’s air filter looked like it hadn’t been touched in years. Even worse, the door between the bathroom and the bedroom was completely transparent. Yes, transparent! We were a group of five, forced to watch each other’s most private moments. The room had just one fan for all five of us, despite the sweltering summer heat. Sleeping was nearly impossible. The beds were old, unstable, and unsafe, with deep cracks underneath that made us feel as though they might collapse at any moment. And to crown it all, right at the entrance there was an appalling piece of racist graffiti left there for everyone to see, unaddressed and unremoved. This place is not just poorly managed. It is unsafe, unsanitary, and utterly disrespectful to its guests. This place might've had its days, many years ago. But for now, do yourself a favor: stay far, far away.

The hostel is in a fantastic location and the rooms are adequate and the common area is a great place to meet people or chill. The staff however are the main reason I would recommend this hostel. They offer a pub crawl or as Marco described it a walking tour of Sofia by night, in which he brought us to many hidden pubs and made me feel very safe and comfortable on my first night in the city alone.

I don't know about the other rooms, but if you stay there, don't book the 18 beds dorm. They're just smalls beds lined up next to each other in a dark place, no intimacy, the bathroom is small and dirty, it just feel so uncomfortable. I woke up many times because the guy next to me was coughing all night (and I had earplugs). That's how close you'll be from strangers, less than a meter... When I left (7am) there was a drunk guy asleep blocking the staircase. The common area is good for socializing, less for relaxing. Location is good close to the center

I honestly don’t understand why Hostel Mostel has such a low rating on Google. I’ve stayed here many times over the years and will absolutely keep coming back! I usually book through Booking.com since it often works out cheaper and I can make changes if needed. The dorm was surprisingly clean for such a budget stay, and the staff are friendly, helpful, and efficient. They really go out of their way to fulfill your requests and make sure you’re happy. If you're a solo traveller who enjoys socializing, the grand common room is a big plus – you can play pool, have drinks, and chat with people from all over the world. It really exceeded my expectations and remains one of the cheapest and best hostels I’ve ever stayed at! Bonus points for the food and tea: Breakfast buffet for just 10 leva is both cheap and delicious. They even offer lactose-free options, and Katya’s scrambled eggs are something else – I don’t know how she makes them taste so good! Plus, there’s free black tea available all day in a big keg, which is pretty awesome. Highly recommended for backpackers, budget travellers, and anyone looking for good vibes on a low budget.

Stayed here with a big scouts group (28 people) We got 2 private houses close to each other that were exactly what we needed. Location was very nice and it’s a good price! Staff was also very friendly and easy to talk to! Loved talking to the other people that were staying in this hostel! Would definitely recommend!
