Hostel Pousada Pais Tropical

I stayed at Pais Tropical twice and had a wonderful time each visit. The location is perfect, right in the heart of Pelourinho. Staff is friendly and welcoming. As a single female traveler I felt safe and well looked after. The rooms are colourful and spacious. Water can be purchased in the hostel and there is a laundry service as well. My favorite part about this hostel was the breakfast buffet: tasty freshly baked cake and pan cakes, homemade banana jam, fresh fruit & juices, eggs, manioc, etc. Non of the mass produced processed foods from the supermarket. Breakfast is homemade every morning :)

When my taxi drove into the beautiful triangle shaped plaza and the driver pointed to the blue building overlooking It, my jaw dropped; the building and its surroundings are incredibly picturesque. The sunsets from the windowsills in the common areas are breathtaking. The staff was amazing. I was so appreciative of their communication. I would receive a response to an email (to confirm airport pickup--very smooth) within the hour. They also gave me a lot of helpful suggestions as to what to do and see in the area. The owner of the hostel Felipe is extremely personable. He suggested I visit the island of Itaparica which was a great adventure and very easy to get to from the hostel. Have I mentioned the breakfast. BEST Breakfast I've ever had at a hostel. Fresh fruits, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, different local breads and more! Fantastic Experience!!

This hostel was perfect for what we were looking for when searching for places to stay in Salvador. It's right in the center of the historic district of Pelourinho, making it a very convenient location for walking around. The breakfast was a great start to the day with fresh juice, bread, cheese, fruit and coffee and tea. The staff was able to arrange transportation to the airport, which was also a plus. A very affordable hostel in a great location.||||Upon check-in, the staff wasn't able to see if we had prepaid or not for our stay. We were able to sort it out, but it seems like this information should be clear to the hostel staff when accessing the reservation. We were also given a different room than we originally booked. Again, not a huge issue for us, but it seems like the front desk was a little disorganized. Wifi and hot water were hit-or-miss, but this is a hostel, not a luxury resort. ||||All in all, we had a wonderful stay in Salvador!

Stayed here for a little over a week and thoroughly enjoyed my stay here! ||||Travelling alone, I soon found I made friends easily, both with travellers within the hostel but also, with the owner of the hostel who was truly one of the nicest, most down to earth of individuals I had ever come across. All of the rest of the staff here were also extremely friendly and welcoming and also, very helpful. ||||The location of the hostel itself, was located right in the centre of Pelourinho and so I could not have asked for a better location. ||||The breakfast was by far one of the BEST breakfast's I have ever had at a hostel and was a buffet consisting of fresh fruit, homemade cakes, fresh fruit juice, bread rolls etc. ||||Overall, great service and breakfast. Reasonably priced. Would HIGHLY recommend this hostel!

This hostel is at the best place in Pelourinho. You overlook the most beautyful square full of musik,,atmosphere, colors, life. Safe and cozy. Nice hosts, englishspeaking and very helpfull. Rooms are basic but clean and colorfull. Really good, fruity breakfast. Everything at a low , very fair price. We just loved it.

Warning: Especially to female travelers, DO NOT SUPPORT Hostel Pousada Pais Tropical. I booked a 4 week stay at this establishment, paid in full, in advance. Bad move. After a mere two days staying at this hostel, the owner, made a sexual advance towards to, to which I firmly declined. Days later, he continued to harass me, to the point where I needed to seek police and legal intervention. I left the hostel for my own safety, but was denied a refund for the remaining days of my booking -- nearly 3 weeks worth! As a warning to female travelers, especially those who are solo, for your own protection, please do not stay at this hostel. I am still in shock and disbelief at the treatment I received. Because of its locations, decent online reviews, and prices, I was convinced this would be a wonderful choice for my time in Salvador. I was sadly mistaken. Protect yourself, ladies. Pelo/Salvador is an amazing place with wonderful people. Please book somewhere else!

Pais Tropical is a laid back hostel that's located in the Pelourinho district. I spent 6 days in a private single (with 2 twin beds). The room looked like the pics online. There was almost no natural light in the room. So I would get up around 6-7 am and sleep in the hammock in the lobby because I like to get up with a little sunshine. The staff was helpful about how to stay safe in the district and where to go. ||I call this a "laid back" hostel because they were no "events" organized/promoted by the hostel despite the fact that the hostel's first floor contains a medium sized club (it was used as a breakfast space while I was there). Everyone did there own thing. Most of the hostel guests were couples so if you are traveling alone/ want to meet people that may be something to anticipate. ||||In my time in the district I did see a lot of other hostels in the district that I don't recall seeing on the major sites. So a "google" search may be needed.

It is located in the heart of Pelourinho, in front of the plaza where Michel Jackson's video was shot, and has walking distance to the bus station, bars, restaurants, all touristic spots. the owner and the staffs are amazingly friendly, and rooms are simple but expansive. Personally, I loved the breakfast area since it was quiet, peaceful and colorful with tasty buffets.
